I am looking at buying one of these as my daily and wondering if anyone has had any experience with them they can share?

Around that price range they are about spot on for what I want, the 3.2 turbo diesel looks to be the same 4 cyl out of the patrol which can't be bad - and doesn't break my tradition of never owning a normally aspirated vehicle, 4x4, 4 door for practicality, and the tray for moving shizzle around.

Seeing I can't edit my post ill just have to look like an idiot :ermm: seems there is only a 3lt TD model with a number of inherent issues, not sure where I got 3.2 from.

I always go by the old adage that you only hear the bad stories, so has anyone owned one of these and what was your experience?

maybe you were thinking of the 3.2lt diesel pajero :D while doing a comparo with the navara....

Ive got a 2005 Navara Turbo Diesel D40, I think your right in thinking you only hear the bad stories and every car model will have one...

I was tossing up between the D22 & D40 at the time, both diesel, I preferred the 6 speed box and 2.5ltr engine for economy and also I think the power is up from the 3ltr, but then again alot of the 4x4 guys love the d22 for the down low torque of the 3ltr, as the 2.5 needs to be on boost to really get up and go, oh and it does. 1.85T is fun to drive around and yes you do feel like a truck driver compared to normal sedan drivers, and Ive never been a 4x4 or diesel driver, but now Im loving it... I regularly get 10.1 ltrs per 100Ks, I reckon thats good for the amount of weight Im haulin.

Things to look for, worn rotors, get one with a good service log book, look underneath for signs of a hard off road life

Keep in mind too that the canopies and hard tonneau covers wont fit that tray, so if you want a hard cover go the STR, I have the RX D40 and am looking for a STX tub so I can put a hard cover or canopy on it.

I towed a ute on a car trailer 4.5hrs south to drop it off I did the round trip (970Ks) on $135 of fuel, thats hauling 1.2T of car and trailer plus the 1.85T of 4x4 and it did it easily, 120Kph on freeway no problems, now Im planning to take it way out west for a desert holiday...

Just make sure the modification bug doesnt bite you, 4x4 and diesel upgrades are many... Im trying so hard to keep it standard

As a comparison I was looking at diesel STR D22s with 98,000 Ks 2004 for $19-$21K... thats in Sydney

I think you might be right... between the Navara, the Hilux and the odd Mitsa there are so many different models its doing my head in!

Cheers for the insight 75coupe. Good log book is going to be a must as I am looking towards higher Km examples.

I also hear the odd story of bent chassis with the dual cabs but I suspect this is not isolated to the Navara with the way the tray sits past the back wheels. I won't be looking to carry heavy loads in the back, will be more for towing the GTR and the womans bloody horse floats so shouldn't be a problem.

The fuel economy sounds great - will be keeping it stock for sure save maybe a snorkel, and a winch would be handy.

well its not a fourby if it aint got a winch and snorkel, plus its fun to winch peoples cars into trees at parties...

How do you go with Tires / and what do you run? I take it they will be pretty pricey, and being of a nobby nature will wear out on the tarmac at a reasonable rate.

Ive had on cooper ATRs and yeah they dont wear too well on tarmac, but in the mud they rule... and yes expensive...

Next Im going with either Maxxis I think at $210 a corner, 245/75/16 which is an oversized tyre, oversized tyres are a good thing on 4x4s for economy and offroad handling...

I find my driving style has changed too, now any chance to go offroad I take it, even in shopping centre car parks, no free piece of land is off limits now...

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
