Hey guys,

This is my first post on Skylines Australia as i just recently bought a lovely 96 r33 skyline series 2. As happy as i am about the purchase

and loving every second driving it i encountered my first problem. To cut a long story short i filled the tank up yesterday completly with BP

Ultimate fuel. Prior to this i had put a little mobile in and there were no problems what so ever. However after i put this BP fuel in all of sudden

the idle starting playing up and also when i backed off the accelerator the revs would drop dramtically before picking up again sometimes almost

stalling. Also the car seems to be backfiring quite abit after this i put this tank of fuel in. What am i looking at here? Air Flow metre or just a bad

batch of petrol or maybe something else...

could be a bad batch of fuel, but could be some of the problems more common to skylines. very hard to say. if it started straight after putting in the fuel i would be inclined to say bad fuel.

Yeah it did after the batch of BP Ultimate :) the only thing i filled the whole damn car with it! So now i am just going to drive it around and

empty my car completly. I am hoping it is just the bad batch but you were saying that it could be problems more common to the skylines. Could you

be more specific as i am new to the skyline family of cars.

ok, there are a few common problems with the RB motors.

1st: eratic idle after lifting off. possible causes range from dirty IAC/AAC valves (there is a DIY on how to clean these) to old/worn spark plugs or coil packs or from having an atmo bov fitted.

2nd: a missfire when accelerating can be caused by old/worn sparkplugs or weak coil packs and on r32 and s1 r33's a dodgy ignitor unit (s2 r33 and r34 don't have a seperate unit, it is built into the coil packs).

3rd: both of the above issues can be caused by a dodgy afm. the exact cause varies from a stuffed unit that requires replacing or just a dodgy solder where the terminals of the plug join the board. another possibility is a dodgy CAS (crank angle sensor), but the other things are more common.

there are other issues as well, but they are the main ones.

if it comes down to just being bad fuel, i would look at putting a new fuel filter in as soon after you fill up as possible.

Thanks very much for that yeah this weekend i will be having a nice look at the AFM with a mate, i have also heard of these troublesem coilpacks

on the r33 however according to the person i bought the car off the coilpacks have recently been chnaged to brand new spitfire coilpacks.

ok well they should be fine then. if you want to know for sure if they have been changed, just look at them. if they are blue then they are splitfire ones (stock ones are black). i'd also look at cleaning the IAC valve.

In other words, I would keep a sample before you dilute the 'offending fuel' with a top-up.

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
