"not to mention they are an entry level sports car"

really? don't think so! I guess everybody's terminology differs though.

In terms of japanese sports cars, my idea of entry level is an mx5, etc. A GTST/GTT or silvia is probably the next step up. Then You have the big boys - GTR, Supra, GTO, FD Rx7. (and the real top shelf of factory cars goes to the top spec NSX, nur spec GTR...)

Where does the GTiR fit? Well its definitely a rally focused car - so I guess if it was around today, it would be a competitor for the evo or sti.

It definitely has the gear - and it definitely pulls the times. Easily one of the best cars to get fast times for low $$$ - it's been proven over and over.

The only real weak points are the gearbox, the looks (obviously subjective) and the fact that most are now missing their factory umbrella.

Definitely not an entry-level car, IMO

Hi guys interesting thread.

I had one of the first road rego'd GTI-Rs in the country (mine was number 32 or something I think) and it was awesome.

In standard spec they put out factory rated 167Kw on Jap fuel.

A little different here with our fuel but close enough.

You might have seen my car, it was in hot4s for a whiteline suspension feature a while ago. Rego was NSW seb-20T

I left the engine and turbo standard. Intercooler too (lots of crew do front mount conversions to avoid heatsoak from the top mount position)

Did the suspension etc as above DMS struts etc, leather interior system etc.

Put a 2 1/2 exhaust from the turbo back and pods and fitted motec.

It put out nearly 190Kw at the wheels at 1.2 bar with octane booster added to premuim unleaded. About a 20 Degree day. Still have the dyno sheet if anyone wants it, but they can put out waaaaaay more than that if built up right. Some of the UK GTI-R owners (they did a limited production run of them to the UK, about 100 or so) go mental putting 3037 HKS turbo's on them and get over 550Kw out of them. I went to the UK and sussed it out. Awesome. I saw one at a car meet called trax 2000 at silverstone pull a 3.4sec 0-60. No shit. I was flattened.

You're right about the 4wd too, no Attessa although a Nismo electronically controlled centre diff was available for them for about a zillion dollars. hens teeth to. Also usless unless you got a homologation run car with the front LSD. the standard ones run an open front.

But my car was a rocket!! and I loved it. I used to drag bikes with it. Didn't win much but shocked the hell out of most guys I ran. Lost count of how many bikes did mono's tryin to out run me. Classic.

Drove it around the dandenong ranges as well one year with the Nissan SVD guys about 4-5 others and some GTRs.... and the GTI-Rs smashed the gtrs in the twisty stuff. I mean destroyed them!! it was hilarious.

Some may expect that, but at the time I didn't, I mean we just hosed them! We had to keep stopping and waiting for them they were so far back at one stage.

I then bought an R33 Vspec which I still have today. Owned them both for a while and comparing the two... I have to say different strokes for different folks you know.

Moded how it was my GTI-R was way faster than my standard Vspec gtr. Its common knowledge in most circles that a stock GTR feels sluggish. The GTI-R not only felt faster but actually was faster. I got one of mates to drive it and I dragged him in my GTR and he smashed me by a few lengths to mid way through 3rd where with the extra GTR puff I managed to reel him in a bit.

The GTR is a different style of drive altogether. its rear biased and heavier, power sliding, open road eating gentleman cruising.

The GTI-R was all anilihating at the lights, super chuckable, twisty stuff eating, cheese grating pleasure! Do I need mention WRX and STI eliminator! And with the right suspension can be made to handle its understeer problems.

Having said all of that when I just up'd the boost on my GTR to 1bar I was back in front by about a car length at top end of second, but off the line those things eat anything. If launched right you can get them to jump nearly a car length its awesome.

If I could, I'd have both I liked it that much, but the Vspec has got the nod for now.

Sebaz

heh, me and a mate were watching a little gtir race a motor bike from a set of lites

the bike obviously didnt know what he was in for and took off slow, the pulsar was long gone

Seb, awesome post :(

I may have a picture of this somewhere. I think yourself, Jarret, Dex were in it.

Btw: It's Dandin :)

Different toys for different boys.

I think if they released a new model, in such a way the S15 has upgraded the silvia, theyd probably sell pretty good.

You just dont get the same respect driving a skyline than any other car, i see it whenever i drive anywhere. Every 5min i get people at lights asking me this and that and whats this and do that etc the girls love it, ive met 3 hotties purely because of the skyline. And everywhere i go everyone looks, ive even had girls run out into the street while waiting at the lights outside the VIC in the city, and ask me to take them for a drive.. and its happened more than once :(

A mate of mine has a Mazda Familia GTR, which are pretty rare around here.

Before i bought my car i spent countless nights with him driving around, hardly anyone even looked at us and if they did it was more of a discraced look, mainly cos its noisy, hatchback and they dont know what it is.

Ive raced him in the familia, yes they ARE fast. But IMO they just dont cut it in the other areas a car need to have in order to be unique and have attraction.

Same with GTiRs ive raced some of them, and been beaten, but thats not all there is too a car.

(I know im talking about a familia, but there basically a GTiR)

thats my opinion anyway,

ide like 2 get one for a project car, or then again i could sell my GTSt and buy a GTR or spend $20K on my GTSt now

    • I have more than enough digging, laying blocks, moving gravel, airrating, feeding and top soiling the grass, and setting up the veggie gardens growing some seedlings,  and then removing all the unused rock to keep me busy for the next few months at least,  hopefully the rain stops soon so I can get a few hours in this arvo, but, before that Sunday is washing day, is every body happy, you bet your life we are Nice country road day drives are a day off whenever I'm muscle sore from all the landscaping at the moment, but, more epic multiple day drives will start once the majority of the big jobs outside are completed
    • I hear that would involve some nice country road drives into the hills for Mark...
    • I thought I'd come back and add something I JUST learned. A Toyota LandCruiser with a 1HZ, mates perfectly with a bottle of Nulon brake fluid. As in, it perfectly screws in. Great make shift funnel when you cut the bottom of it off. This may work for your Corolla.   Unfortunately, tipping a 10L drum is much harder than a 4 to 6L bottle, and they no longer include the easy pour tap which was just perfection to use previously.
    • Guys since i bought r33 gts25t coupe 1994 automatic a/t(manual swap 350z gearbox)  all i got is problems, always problems. Lets start with that when i turn key into ignition(ON) fuel pump doesnt always works. Sometimes i have to turn key twice Off/on/off/on until it primes. Its new, dw300 - 340lph. My gearbox broke so i did gearbox swap, install different intake manifold, injectors and i take pipes. Car was sitting in garage for more than half a year. I did assembly all not that long ago and when i turn ignition cant hear prime. All of sudden it stopped working. Theres many videos on YouTube how to make relay mod on r33 straight from battery so i did and it doesnt work! 😰 30 - battery positive  87 - positive from fuel pump to relay 85, 86 - one of two wires from original fuel pump wires(light blue, grey) and it didn’t work. so I check on ignition and took original BLUE relays wires from trunk, next to fuses. (I believe it’s IGN+ and ECU pin 18. it didn’t work…  tried connecting (IGN+ from og relay) and (ECU 104 from 1of4 FPCM wires) to my new relay 85/86 and it didn’t work.  I unplug FPCM. Didn’t work. im thinking what’s wrong   fuel pump is working, if I leave IGN+ on 85 and 86 straight to ground it works but it’s just nonstop. Since it getting constant 12v after key in ON. light blue wire gives me 6-8v.  so how this should be connected? What causing ECU not giving — on pin? Or I did sth wrong and that’s why it doesn’t work? I need negative signal on ECU that control fuel pump. What this should be?
