Hi, just recently with any sort of game I play the comp decides to shutdown instantly. This happens randomly whether it will be the first 10 min of gameplay or 2 hours. Is this problem due to heating? Or graphics card issue/ power supply?

This only happens playing games and not at the desktop, downloading, burning etc.

My comp is running Quad core with windows 7 64 bit, 4gb ram, 550 watt power supply, geforce 9800gtx card (its old now) etc.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

i had a similar issue with my laptop where during anything with a high memory usage (such as playing games) it would shut down. it was an overheating issue due to the heatsink being full of dust and fluff so airflow was dramatically reduced. when playing games, etc the fan was always roaring. even just using photoshop made the fan roar. cleaned out the heatsink and it's all quiet again and haven't had any issues with overheating or switching off. also when i got this current computer off my brother the fan was loud to start with so i cleaned the heatsink as it was moderately dirty. made it run a bit quieter.

whether that is the same problem as you are having i don't know, but it would be worth opening the box up and just seeing if the heatsink is clean and the fan is able to get enough airflow through it to keep it cool

How long has it been since it was given a proper clean/dust etc?

What games does it fail on?

What screen resolution?

As for the rest, as Jacob said, have a crack @ those two and let us know.

By the sound of it i'd be surprised if Furmark doesnt make it fail in mins :)

Although you'll need to rename furmark.exe as the Nvidia drivers look for it and fudge the GPU via the drivers IIRC.

All solved, my comp is dust free and there was shit loads of it. I'm assuming the dust was trapping the heat in and hence why I had those random shutdowns. Thanks for everyone putting in useful suggestions.

i think the ur pc is trying to hint u should go out and see some light...come back to civilization

Like you can talk when you actually made the effort to post petty crap like that.

    • I was only looking because I saw some drops on the ground but it wasn't alot. Recently had it serviced will ask the mech to confirm. Find it strange that it looks standard though, can see in another photo of a random box
    • So...not sure if you know if that has always been there or why you went looking. It could be old damage from a clutch explosion, or even just the gearbox got dropped somewhere along the line. Basically, you should seal it up to stop oil and dust getting into the bellhousing, but it doesn't matter too much and is not structural. I'd suggest something like a glob of JB Weld. BTW what gearbox oil are you running, I would guess the breather has been spewing it everywhere.
    • Hey Duncan thanks for your reply. Sorry mate I know the photos are shit.  Took another photo for reference. Seems the casing does have a hole in it looking on the net, fluid seeping out. Added a photo
    • Very hard to make out what you mean, is it the squarish hole with redline shockproof (probably) under it? Is that pic from on top of the engine with the firewall to the left of pic and engine to the right? Either way, spray the area liberally with degreaser and try again, maybe circle the part you are worried about
    • Hey all, Noticed I have a hole on top of which im guessing is my transfer case/gearbox. I can see it from the middle of my firewall looking down. S1 R33 gtr Any advice or can pinpoint what this is/caused this?
