I did one of those MITA induction courses, while at school during the last month or so of year 10.

It was like a general basics on mechanics, panel beating and painting, so you get to know a bit of each.

Probably not enough to be able to leave and go a project on your own, it'd be a good step up into a TAFE course or something of the like though.

i did a faimly of trades course then an apprenticeships with them about 5 years ago

the best thing i have ever dont and still loving working on carsevery day

nothing better then having a trade behind you to fall back on if every thing goes wrong

Hey Ben, how long did the course go for? It sounds like a good start!

Im doing a few short courses soon, one on mechanics, one on basic panel work, one on interior retrimming so i hope that will be a good start, and maybe the MITA course will take me a few steps up!

Yeah I would love to be able to work on cars as a profession, but we will see where life takes me

MITA is shit. I'm almost finished a mechanics apprentiship, will be glad to get away from MITA. Thats my personal opinion, although I will admit I wont be where I am now if it wasnt for MITA.

Best way to learn is to study, study, study, research as much as you can, then go get your hands dirty. Remember where everything goes, take photos of how it all goes together if necessary, and keep in mind shit only goes back together one way! My first engine swap was in a small dusty shed in Chittering, managed to do it all myself. And I'm not entirely the best mechanic around, in fact the sooner I get out of this industry the better, but it just goes to show its not overly hard when you put your mind to it and jump in head first.

Best of luck mate!! The Skyline is a good car to work on, not too hard. Just dont try and do coolant hoses other then top and bottom hose. You WILL go crazy!!!!! Worst thing I've ever had to do...

Hey Rhys,

I'm not planning on doing any work to the skyline by myself anytime soon!

Thinking of getting some unrego'd cheap lil car to take apart and learn something with, since i've got some friends who've done alot of work on their own cars etc, thought they could come and help me work on the lil bunkie! :)

its interesting to see all the different opinions on different training/learning environments!

thanks for all the feedback so far everyone

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
