I had a 250awkw 03 wrx. Had 75HP NOS hooked up also. Good for 11sec passes.

Loved it, but after a while the tin feeling and cheap looking interior got to me.

The wife hated it.

The classic wrx's were known to explode on impact. Very unsafe.

People have to remember that the rexes arnt like skylines, they dont take well to engine mods. You see heaps of standard rexes doing up to 300,000 but modded ones rarely last long with big power.

But in standard form or even just slightly boosted they are still quick. One of my mates has a stock 99 and it blitzed me 3 times in a row 0-100 in my 34, and I had semis on the back with 230 odd. The traction they have is insane compared to a rwd car.

I think as a daily that can do multiple things well a wrx is perfect, besides doing c.v boots and joints every 50,000 they wont really break unless thrashed.

Bullshit...having driven and owned both, i can tell you the evo is a much much much better car all round Evo 6s and 7s are becomming quite cheap these days.

I went through about 4 afms in 8 months and that was normal boring driving in the wrx. Clutch went and gearbox was dying. Also the motors fail as stated above. Reliability and performance the evo absolutely beats a wrx or STI hands down.

Ill second this, I too have had an EVO and now WRX (05) as my daily driver and I now find myself wanting another EVO.

It is NO contest, EVO hands down in every single way

yep, and an 05 model is many times better than a 2000 model wrx. I agree with dean too, the old wrx are just too old. a 2000 model wrx is a wallet ache waiting to happen. a mate has one and even the good ones are starting to fall apart. the build quality on them back in 2000 was just not that great. interiors look old and tired by now, the brant code pad alarm is annoying as fk and it WILL get you stranded by the side of the road sooner or later. they all fail eventually and leave you stuck somewhere with the alarm going and no way to start the car. my mates 2000 model wrx which had log books and was in near standard condition recently lunched it's engine too. and his was about $14K from memory which he bought this year and it was a good price for a WRX with log books, full service history etc owned by an older bloke. for your $10K budget all you'll be buying is some lengthy repair bills in your near future. for a $10K budget a 00 wrx is not the car for you (or your wife).

I would push the 04 or later liberty GT but they are way out of your budget.

with $10K to spend I'd be looking at a carolla or maybe a legnum like iron chef mentioned. wrx for $10K will cost you another $10K inside the first 6 months. I'd bet on it. so in that case I'd save the other $10K and go shopping with $20K and buy a nice car first time out.

Can't really compare it to my brother's EVO 7 though...

Sure you can :D

+1 Evo, but there could be a bias ;) Though, the Evo is not as nice a drive as a WRX - They are 100% a driver's car so being for the Mrs, I'd go WRX purely for comfort reasons

Really i always thought the 98-00 ones were the best, a guy at work has a 02 and the interior and build quality seems worse then an 00, at least interior wise.

I guess your mate had bad luck with the engine, where I used to work we did Subaru and I never saw a rooted engine in the 4 years i was there, i did see a few that had piston slap but i guess it depends on what you consider munched.

I personally love Subaru's but would never buy one if I wanted crazy power or to be a track weapon.

Plenty of Legnums getting around locally for $10K - I'm not anti-Subaru, but they're a better car than a WRX in just about every way possible...

can you shed a bit more light on the legnums for me mate? all i know about them is what ive read on carsales adds. how do they perform performance / handling / braking wise?

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
