Hi guys,

I have been interested in photography for sometime and always wanted a nice camera so I finally got around to getting a Nikon D300 and now need to purchase the all important lens.

The reason I am looking at a Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 is because it is so versatile and would pretty much cover all the photo's I could hope to take (for now anyway... I will probably get a 50mm f/1.4 down the track). What I was hoping for was some feedback from people who have used the 24-70. I know that its a full frame lens and that my camera is not but I am not too bothered because my main attraction is that it can hold f/2.8 across the entire range!

Also I know that the lens is big and heavy (the photo below says all) but that is not of concern to me, only its performance. Cheers

This is the review that I read: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/24-70mm.htm

I've used it on my mates camera when he hired it. Great lens. He is actually in the states and is buying one over there as we speak.

I own a Canon 24-70 and it's basically the same. The Canon one might be a touch heavier.

If your planning on shooting wide stuff, this is not the lens for you if you don't own a FF camera. If you did own a FF camera this would be equivalent to shooting around 16mm on a crop.

A lot of lenses out there have a constant aperture of 2.8.

There is a tamron 17-50 2.8 - Have you considered that? I believe this lens is super expensive in the Nikon lineup ~$2400?

Either way, you will love how sharp it is, great walk around lens as long as you don't want to shoot wide.

Hey mate,

Thanks for the reply.

I know that there are other zoom lenses that have a constant aperture of 2.8 but none of them seem to be quite as highly rated. I know that the Nikon 24-70 is expensive but I would rather spend a bit and get as good a lens as I can. I have seen them on ebay for around $1,700 - $1,800. I'll see how I go though

the equivalent crop lens is the 17-55mm 2.8 nikon which is good, but for crop sensors.

They are both good lenses, I have used both but the 24-70 is an expensive piece of glass. If you are planning to move to FF then get it, all you need is that and the 70-200VR to cover most of the photos you'll ever take. If you need wide, you can get a 17-35mm 2.8 but that's pricey too.

If money is tight you could consider the sigma 24-70 2.8 which is also a FF lens and I have that one. Bit softer when at wide apertures but at less than half the price you can't complain.

    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
