hi all,

I've been experiencing backfire when pressing on the accelerator with a bit more force than say normal driving. I've searched the threads on backfire and can't seem to find or think of anything that may be relating to my issue. Am going to change spark plugs and coilpack was changed by previous owner.

So this afternoon i experimented with turning off tcs and flooring it a bit. No backfire. Turn tcs on floor it around 4000'rpm a little backfire. Was wondering if anyone has any knowledge as to whether this could be linked? At times it feels as if I'm flooding the engine causing a mismatch in petrol and air? Possibly running rich? Any help would be appreciated.

Coil packs possibly or fuel pump possibly not operating at full potential ?

No expert but can't see how traction control would do anything unless it is and electrical issue and tcs is connected to the same system as whats at fault ?

Try to run the ecu for errors or hook up a consult cable and check the sensors etc

sounds to me like your TCS working. cutting the spark? and a bit of unburnt fuel burning once it hits the turbine blades. similar to hitting the limiter for a split second. sounds pretty normal to me but im no expert on '34s

yeh pudz thats what my theory was. It certainly feels like this is happening when I'm in the drivers

seat. But like you and I we're no experts. Hopefully someone out there cam shed some light on the situation.

I'm going to get around to changing these soon. So many ideas on what could be happening.

Have a quick check and see if the previous owner remove the TCS butterfly, it's only secured by two screws inside the throttle body. If it's not there, when the system kicks in you get some decent backfires as you get reduced fuel, but not reduced airflow.

yeh thats another way you could describe it. When i put my foot down it goes then feels like it holds back then bang backfire. I've been taking TCS off and everythings been fine so far. I can c how thw whole unburnt fuel entering exhaust and exploding can happen because it feels as if im planting my foot down and flooding the engine. Really need an opinion with fact behind it. I can only guess as to what is happenning.

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
