Hi all!

I'm Dan.

Since this is my first post, if anyone could even actually be bothered reading my needlessly massive slab of text, id appreciate it. I haven't checked all the topics, this is really an intro and background, but if someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Im a former owner of 2 WRX's, started from 18 & lasted 5 years til all the mods and 2 gearbox's plus repayments was just too much. I sold up and still ended up paying for it for the following 5 years... But it was fun! No regrets!

After 5 years of company cars and sh!tty run abouts, it's time once more for me to enjoy a good jap sports car.

A 1997 S14 200SX. SR20DET. nice car, great condition, completely stock standard, always serviced, it's near perfect for the age, but.... it's auto... And was purchased by accident at an auction. went with my brother, saw this car drive in looking perfect from outside, and sounded like awesome value, called him over just as a ""Hey check this out!!" kinda thing, but in the noise and speedyness of proceedings and confusion and excitement, he thought I called him cos I wanted to buy it (he had our number card) and put in the last bid!!!

BANG!!

Sold to the idiot who didn't even know the kms or that it's auto!!

Anyway, no hard feelings cos it was a hidden blessing, awesome value, way cheaper than the equal manual might have gone for on the day, and better condition than any I've seen privately. And it's White, a blank canvas plain-jane that I can make my own! I like!

So I'm happy, but I need to swap in a manual box asap. Ideally a 5 speed box from an rb25det r33 would be perfect and prefered for outright toughness and potential power handling (since I paid for 2 WRX box's, yuk) I know this would be the safe option long term, although less straight forward.

but I'm not closed to the idea of a s14 5 speed since I hear they'll take a boosted beating (unlike s15 6 speed) but are less prefered to an r33 box for drifting, but are a simple swap in (ecu, box, pedals, etc) and are cheaper.

That's basically just what I've researched so far, a basic idea, I need to know cost, availability, complications of going either way, any info anyone knows from personal exp is great, and where/who in Melbourne I can talk to to get this done, find parts, etc.

I'm not expecting detailed responces here, so I'd apreciate knowing which thread to direct my questions at, I'd appreciate advice even more tho.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is patient enough to read my story!

D.

welcome. :)

i would maybe try out an s14 box first if its a decent price.

see if it breaks lol and then if it does go to the trouble of getting a bellhousing made up to put a 25DET box into your 200.

or just go all out and get the 25DET box with custom bellhousing first off.

good luck!

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
