So if I wanted to run probably around 21psi max through a turbo with HKS gate with only a manual boost controller..

It only has a 7psi spring I think, im not sure how to check without it being hooked up yet but Im doubtful it will be up to the task

I looked around online and only springs I could find from HKS was a 11-14psi or a 15-19psi..

Which would be best, or am i going about it all wrong?

yeah, the springs are over 60$ each which is partway to an EBC..i may do that yet but atm i just have a turbotech tap..which controller did you use?

Ash here, maybe I'm not reading it right..the yellow and purple springs at the bottom.

with a decent controller you could run 21psi with a 7psi spring. i have the same 7psi 38mm hks gate and used to hold 23psi easily with an ebc

Lucky man!

When i was running 17psi & a 7psi spring i had gate creep (45mm progate) no matter what around 14psi. Would climb to 17psi eventually but it was a good 1000rpm late. Changed to a 14psi spring and problem gone instantly :)

Trying to get rid of 2-3psi is easy - trying 7+ can encounter problems.

Hey guys,

Been trying to find out more about wastegate springs, thought instead of starting a new thread I would just dig this one up :D

Anyway, I've recently purchased a Turbosmart Comp-Gate40 for my new setup, but I'm confused about the spring selection. The gate comes with a 7psi spring installed and ready to go, but I'm planning on running 14psi low boost and 20psi high boost (too large a gap for good boost control???). I know I should be aiming for as close to my target boost pressure as possible, so I thought I need to get a 14psi spring and then use my Greddy Profec to obtain the 20psi.

However after reading up on the Turbosmart website, they recommend the 7psi spring if my desired boost pressure is 14psi? That doesn't seem right to me. I THINK what is confusing me is the different types of springs; they list inner, middle and outer springs. So I'm guessing that the wastegate comes with a 7psi middle spring, and what they are recommending me to do is to purchase a 7psi outer spring, and then run the 7psi middle spring with the 7psi outer spring to give me my target boost of 14psi, am I correct here or am I way off??

You are right man. 7 plus 7 equals 14. You just add the spring pressures together pretty much. My gate came with a 7psi inner already installed and it also came with a 10 psi outer which I installed. Its quite hard to hold the cap on with one hand and put the bolt in with the other. Running straight out the turbo it hit 17 psi exactly. With the exhaust it ran 14 psi. I use a bleed valve for boost control and also my right foot.

Haha yehh, I know that personally I will most likely just use my right foot more often than not. However there are times when other people drive my car and they don't have much experience with high performance cars, so I would like to be able to turn the boost down for piece of mind ;)

Ok, glad I was on the right track, have been puzzling about this for a good hour now. Anyone know where I can get a genuine 7psi outer spring from? The Turbosmart website isn't very helpful, and a quick google search reveals mostly forums listing the part number as a reference. Tried looking on eBay and found some, but they want ~$30 for the spring and $40+ for delivery! ermm.gif Or there's the one's from 999Automotive, but I don't trust using cheap generic springs, I'd rather use a genuine part. Could probably get one from my tuner but I know they will put their mark-up on it.

A little backyardish, but you can shim the spring up so long as it doesnt bind at full lift. Easily checked by hooking up an air pressure reg to the bottom port and feed air pressure into it until it cracks off the seat.

That works pretty well for finding out roughly what psi the spring is good for, especially when you have no idea.

this is why i gave up on the compgate and got the tial with all the springs in the box..:D

I believe the compgate springs arent as universal as other gates either but im not certain..

I really wanted the compgate but every seller i asked about the compgate said it only came with 7psi spring and finding more springs was a headache at best..garage 7 was the only place i could find at 40$ a pop..

So your saying it came with a 10psi spring in the box as well???

Just man up and run 17 and be careful who you lend your car too..

Mine came with a 10 in the box and a 7 in the gate. Now it has both in the gate. Plus a few turns on the bleed valve as well biggrin.gif

I think Hanaldo only has a 7 psi spring.

Lol at lending ya car. I sure as hell wouldn't. I only let the missus take it anywhere.
