044 is for external use, the 040 is for in tank use

The 044 will only flow as much as the 040 when mounted in tank, but will flow more when used as a extrenal pump as it was designed to do

Please explain......

Is this true? Why would mounting it internal make a difference to flow??

I would explain if I knew for sure, I am just passing on what I have been told

I have been told by alot of people, and the guy that sold me my pump, Mick at Tilbrooks etc

Have you seen either of the pumps? The 040 has a large filter/strainer at the bottom, the 044 has a small inlet for fuel hose, which people then attach a strainer too with a short length of hose, this must restrict it somewhat. I think when the 044 has to suck fuel up from the tank, and then pressurize it, and then pump it under pressure to the fuel rail it doesn't flow what its rated at. When it recieves constant flow from a surge tank or a small lift pump etc it will then perform to its rated flow, and out-perform the 040

I think its just a matter of using them for there intended purpose. In tank, the 040 is best suited and works well, and when mounted in tank the 044 works well, but apparently will flow the same as a 040 when it is mounted in the tank.

That said, many people are running in-tank mounted 044's but from what I understand there is no benefit in running the bigger pump unless it is mounted externally and is fed the fuel, rather than having to suck it up

What I mean is, when it is fed fuel by a helper pump - ie mounted externally out of the fuel tank as it was designed to, it will outflow the 040

When it has to suck fuel up itself, as it does mounted internally, it flows the same as a 040

What I have been told by all the people in the know anyhow

Does anybody know what colour the negative wire is coming off the fuel pump on an R33? I was thinking of doing the relay thing too, does anybody know of any negative effects of using this? anyone got photos of a relay setup?

this whole variable speed pump at idle thing really freaks me out

Can't help you out with the colours of the wires Steve

I put the pump in myself, then Mark had to re-wire it and put a relay in for me. This all happend when it was being re-mapped, before the Mick dynasty :D

yeah you can just use the std wiring, but for optimal performance its better to use new stuff, i had my 044 using the std stuff.

Steve just remove the pump and you will see all the wires in the sender and pump, its a easy job on a 32, not sure on the 33s

if you are at full noise and the one and only pump shits itself why wont your motor go bang? pumps normally dont stop they just lose pressure so any failure is not good, so two pump will give a extre chance and with big injectors 700+cc will nearly do the job.

one 044 will support the 600hp no probs but i wonto use two as there are two large fuel lines allreay on the car thanks to nissan and their hicas

remember once tuned any change in pressure will change the amount of fuel going in, so it will make it go bang if left for long enought

    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
