Vct Solenoid. Testing ?

Hello I have a slight suspicion that my VCT isnt working and was after some ways of testing. I dont have many electrical tools but i do have a test light if that helps. Now anyways my understanding was the vct solenoid should click if a direct power feed is wired to the solenoid and a negative one as well. I have tried this with no click. But when i use a test light with the alligator clip on the negative part of the battery and wire a positive power wire of the battery to the other part of the plug the light turns but no click ?

Suggestions. The car is un regoed so i cant test by taking it for a drive

the only way I know to test is to drive plugged in, the drive unplugged. if the is a difference in acceleration/performance the the vct is working, if there is no difference thn plug is cactus.

See I tryed it and there is no difference bit it still picks up good with out it but I believe it would affect economy as well not having it
