My car has been pinging a fair bit, like anything past 4,000rpm even!

Its a 1994 R33

- 3" Custom cat back exhaust

- Pod filter

- NGK iridium plugs (note: it was pinging before I put these in)

So I decided to put on a hybrid front mount and im getting a Walbro 550hp fuel pump, does anyone think these mods are suitable? Or just 'useless' mods so to say.

Thanks in advance.

Don't laugh guys, but the boys from OWS oils have given me a Fuel Catalyst to try, and this is claimed to do a number of things.

1. Reduce Pinging by increase the octane in the fuel

2. Reduce exhaust temps by half

3. Increase fuel economy

4. Allow you to advance timing

5. Increase throttle response

This unit is also claimed to be used by ProDrive UK in there Suby's and the Rally Cars.

I've had it in the car for about 5days now, and we'll be putting it on the dyno with the week to check the results.. However so far, I've noticed a few things:

1. Throttle response seems better

2. Via my Apexi Power FC Hand Controller, my Knock levels are definately down by as much as 15points in some cases.

3. I'm no tech wiz, but I think it also leans out the fuel  if this is true why are my Knock levels down?

4. My GTR runs pretty rich, and my muffler sits a little close to the rear bumper, after a week I usually have to clean it close my white bumper turns cloudy. So far, my bumper isn't half as bad as it normally would be.

5. Fuel savings... I normally get between 16-17ltr/100km, yesterday I filled up & got an average of 15ltr/100k?? Same routine driving, so nothing out of the norm.

Don't take my word for it until we throw it on the dyno, but so far things look good. Maybe this could help your pinging issues "along with many other things eg: timing, boost etc", especially if you have bad fuel in your area.

I'm not saying that mesh's fuel catalyst is a dud, but I tried a fuel catalyst called a Triple Charger and it didn't do anything. I hooked it up when I started using Oil Extreme in my Commodore so I thought it was responsible for some of the extra power and economy. Then when I swapped cars, I tried it without the Oil Extreme because I had been turned off oil additives by that stage. After about 5 tanks I realised that the catalyst had done absolutely nothing so I took it out.

Lately after I put the Oil Extreme in, I found that I got virtually the same extra fuel economy that I got on the Commodore when I had both items hooked up. So I'm thinking that the Oil Extreme was entirely responsible for all the extra power and economy I got.

I dunno, I'm just wary of magical devices. Even additives I'm sceptical of, but I think that it's more likely to do something because you replace it every service, rather than some magical box that sits in your fuel line indefinitely. I would have more faith in the catalysts that you throw in your tank that slowly disolve and you replace after time, rather than those that last forever.

Edit: Mesh - If your catalyst is working as advertised, it's not actually leaning out your fuel but atomising it better. Therefore you will get a more complete burn, which will give you less black smoke thus giving the illusion that it's leaning out. But it's just burning properly, so your knock levels will be down.

B-Man: I got it from OWS Oils the cost is about $450-500, I think their website is www.ows.com.au The product is Broquet Boostmaster "their website is www.broquet.co.uk

Jimbo2000: Yes there are a few types, one has "magic steel balls" that sit in your tank, or the one I have the B40 "Steel tube about 25cm long" that sits in my fuel line, after the fuel filter in my engine bay.

Edit: Mesh - If your catalyst is working as advertised, it's not actually leaning out your fuel but atomising it better. That makes sense..

I filled up again yesterday and got an average of 16ltr/100km.. so the fuel consumption may be down a little, but nothing dramatic. I guess what I'm looking for is not so much fuel ecomony, it's the claimed alternative/similararity to "Water/Methanol Injection" and being able to safely advance timing by the reduce knock levels and better fuel levels. I am starting to think that perhaps the model they have given me is too small for my application seeing the GTR is pushing 500+hp at the motor. The next model up is called the "Top Fuel" which is nearly as big as a Catch Can and cost around $1000... at that price i ca't see it being a good buy $ for performance value.

I've spoken to a few techs about the product, and they said it pretty much does what JimX said, how it's magnetise's the fuel taking out things that shouldn't be there etc etc..

I'll keep you all updated once it goes on the dyno.

    • Take the value it measured as, and pick the closest range available that is above the reading on the screen.   Also, no point just testing the coils. Read what has been said again. You need to test all your wiring, everything.
    • Does the scanner do all the CUs in the car, or only the ECU?
    • @666DAN sorry to bring you and old thread.     I've got my de+t done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.    Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd when selected . But nothing when in  drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic. I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Do ya have any ideas?     Cheers man
    • Well I recently changed my rear axles and was thinking if I bumped anything, I have been driving the car for a while now though... But it has been raining today so everything is wet under the wheel arches. Brakes feel fine and can't hear any of the metal screamers, I had a squeak coming from one of the handbrake drums but that seems to have gone away a while ago. I was going down a hill when it lit up and I did feel the abs bite for a second and question why it did it?
    • Correct. Um. I dunno. I haven't cared enough about the way that the NA cars work to know for sure. But..... The 33/34 turbo manual cars have an electronic speed sensor in the gearbox that outputs a +/- (ie, sawtooth AC) voltage signal. That is connected to the speedo. The speedo then outputs a 0-5v square wave (ie, PWM) signal that the ECU (and any other CU on the bus) sees. The speed sensor is NOT directly connected to the ECU. So here's the problem. Your new ECU expects to see the PWM signal, but must somehow be getting a direct signal from the diff speed sensor. Which would suggest that the wiring of the NA car is not the same as the turbo cars. I think you will need to spend some time with (hopefully the wiring diagram for the car) and a multimeter to see what is connected to what. Then, presuming I am correct**, you would then want to separate the ECU speed signal input from the rest of the car's wiring, and probably either buy a speed signal converter, or build one using an arduino (or similar). That would take in the speed sensor signal and output a scaled (and suitably rearranged) signal for the ECU. ** We shouldn't presume that I am correct here, because there might be something else crazy going on. I don't think you could convert the speedo to be fed from the gearbox sensor, because the pulse rate from that sensor is probably different to the diff sensor and then the speedo would read wrongly. And this also wouldn't fix the ECU's problem either, because the ECU doesn't want to see the gearbox signal direct either (assuming that they are all on the same wiring, for some odd NA related reason, see above caveat!) Does this help? Probably not. Can you make it work? Almost certainly. With the above work. You should buy a handheld oscilloscope from Aliexpress so that you can view these signals directly. Connect up the probes and drive the car. Show photos of the screen when drving at known speeds and connected to different places, and we'll see what we can learn about it.
