Hey guys I purchased a gtr r32 which I was told was rebuilt two owners ago yet no receipts but car seems to run perfectly fine. My question is, I am scared of the oil failures due to the pumps in the rb26s. I am not a mechanic and would like to know how I could check to see what oil pump I am running.. what does it require to check this?? Furthermore, I am looking to have a max power output of 270awkws and it will be strictly street use. Is this a safe figure assuming my engine was rebuilt 10000kms ago on just standard internals no forgies... any experience or info will be much appreciated

With the oil pump it's pretty hard with the engine in the car. If you removed the balancer and front covers (as if you were doing a timing belt) it would be easier. Genuine (standard and N1 pumps) should just have a Nissan branding on the bottom left corner. Some of the other branded pumps will have the brand stamped or painted onto the oil outlet tube that runs to the right from the centre of the pump. The Tomei pumps have "Umeda" cast into the intake side of the pump and have a different looking outlet tube (right side) than the others. That's what mine has and is supposedly the toughest out there but there have been a couple of breakages still.

Presumably it was a pretty standard rebuilt by the sounds of it so I would presume standard or N1 pump. Either way I would put a set of billet gears in it but you may just choose to wait until it lets go (you might get heaps of life out of it still yet if running at the power level you're indicating).

270kw should be totally fine on a relatively standard bottom end but it'll depend what you use it for. Daily driver with the odd rev, fine. Tracking it without all the other oil control and cooling mods done then will be a ticking time bomb.

* street use as you say

* stay off the rev limit

* check oil pressure

* check oil temperature

* watch out for any oil leak through the front crank seal

Thanks guys heaps, yes definitely street use. I know afms, injectors and something else max out at 280awkws so I thought id stop there at 270 and I dont want to spend anymore money on the car for at least 1-2 years. Just did a turbo upgrade to dash -7s... trying to recover at the moment lol. Also if it was to be a standard pump or even an n1, how hard or what is required to upgrade the gears in the pump to like those reimax ones or even changing the pump to a jun one completely... whats involved, like I said I am no mechanic so im clueless but worried

As I alluded to above you're probably better off waiting till it pops itself. You just need to be on the ball that when your oil light comes on you switch it off immediately! I was lucky and turned mine off straight away. Pump was smashed to bits but did zero damage to the engine. Some pumps will crack the outer pump ring but not destroy themselves so there is a drop off of oil pressure which can lead to engine failure in a big bad way.

Just had a look on some of the results here and 270 awkws is barely anything... I was in a 290kw evo 9 last week and that power seemed really really fun for the street but im thinking anything more than 300awks is overkill for just daily use when u factor in fuel consumption and maintenance costs.. so im sticking with 270 kws. Thanks guys heaps, also im looking to install cam gears prior to tuning, any one here can tell me then benefits of them for the power output I am after with midrange? Or should I not bother with them at all?

    • Yes I can see how that would put you off HFM, especially with the price of good quality brake fluid. From what I understand it as you say the BM50 is the standard BMC for a R32 GTR, I must admit I would like to go far a Genuine Nissan BM57, but lack of cash prevents that at present. With the price being so close between the genuine BM50 and BM57 a BM57 New it seems a better choice as you gain that 1/16 bore size with the BM57, I would be interested in how much difference you feel with the BM57 fitted. I am going to take SteveL's advice in the short term and see how much actually comes out of that proportioning valve vent and save up for the Genuine Nissan part. Thanks for clarifying the HFM failure
    • Thanks mate. I just got the post inspection 1/2 done from state roads when the starter motor packed up, either that or the car alarm system is having trouble.  OEM part number 23300-AA112.
    • Hi, I though I was coming to an end in finding a replacement starter motor for a rb25de neo. I came across a starter motor from Taarks and a message below stating: Direct fit. 11 Tooth count. All below part numbers have been superseded to 11 teeth. Can some body shed some light on going from 8 teeth to 11 teeth apart from 36-month / 25,000 km warranty for passenger vehicles to 12 Month Warranty. Compatible with the following Nissan part numbers: 23300-20P00 23300-20P01 23300-20P05 23300-20P10 23300-20P11 23300-AA111 23300-AA112 23300-AA300 23300-08U10 23300-08U11 23300-08U15  
    • Low battery? Maybe check capacity? I know first-hand, on BMWs if your battery drops below 80% capacity, it starts causing strange issues.
    • 8.5 +37 = should fit rear, but I think it'll hit on front. What you want is low 30s/high 20's front, mid 30's rear. That 17" screenshot you posted looks good, I'd run it on my R32 (but that's long dead now). For tyre sizes, my rule of thumb is: 8': 235, 9": 255. But that's just my opinion. Nismo sizes: 18x8.5+35/18x9.5+38 is a good starting point.
