I finally found a picture of the cooler i currently have cooling my rb20. I think its of a 7MGTE (MA70 Supra).

Does anyone have an idea of their level of efficiency, ie, how much boost can safely be run through it? im upgrading soon though still would like to know.

Its the bigger one pictured with inlet/outlet on same end.

cheers

Hi Timd, I used one of those for quite a while, very good cooling. The inlet air temperature drop was very good, much better than many other similarly sized intercoolers I have tested. It did get a bit of pressure drop over 1.1 bar, but it wasn't terrible until about 1.3 bar, then it went verticle. At 1.1 bar it made ~175 rwkw on an RB20.

The inlet and outlet are 55 mm, while the standard RB20/25 pipework is 62 mm. So, if you are going to use one, you will need a couple of silicone reducers (2.5" to 2" is the common size).

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks for the reply mate

Just what i wanted to know, i wouldnt be running more than 1bar through it so it is still within its limit, good stuff. I am still going to have to upgrade though. As i have turbo inlet, i/c inlet and outlet all running ontop of each other due to the in/outlet being on the same side of this cooler. This leaves my pod tucked up in the left corner getting bugger all cool air. My plan is to run the i/c out pipe under the drivers guard and into the bay, behind the radiator and up over the rocker cover. This should free me up some space for an air box or at least cold air ducting. Its tricky in the 280zx as theres not much space to work with.

Do you know if there has to be any engineering if i cut a hole in the engine bay(leading out to under the guard) for i/c out pipe? Should it be reinforced in the event it may cause weekness?

thanks again

    • Legend. I ended up finding the facebook account of the owner of the first car i sent but sadly he deactivated the account. I think you’re right in saying it’s some sort of well done custom job. Really appreciate your help anyways.
    • Totally equivalent. Stock often goes from the comp cover because that's where the actuator is also installed and the factory needs 2" of hose to make the connection - and it comes as a pre-assembled unit. They totally have a boost reference from somewhere between the turbo and the throttle(s). Oh, jeez. Just do it in M12 then. We don't actually care that much. I would expect any such AN converter fitting to rely on an o-ring or some other seal onto a flat surface under the flange of the hex**, because bolt threads are no intended to provide a pressure seal. unlike..... pipe threads. **which also requires a suitably flat and smooth surface on the turbo's boss to provide the seal.
    • I also used NP   That’s were it’s seems to be the best place to fit it? All schematic shows also that it’s should be referenced from the turbo housing. But idk, I do see high hp cars without any connection or anything to their turbos, so I really don’t know how they connect their things
    • I do have loctite 243 and 246 and a few more models. I could drill it now in place and make new threads for m12 and order an4 - m12 coupling and fit that to the turbo. Run a braided hose to the EBC which I could get a an4 to 1/8npt
