My GTR screams/whistles it's tits off when it comes on boost.

It's not the intake pipes, been checked.

It's not the Intercooler pipes, been checked.

It still boosts properly and is not down on power.

There is no extra exhaust noise.

There is no smoke, fuel or oil.

It still idles/drives perfectly except when you start to boost.

The noise is akin to a giant frog humping a Boeing 747.

Any ideas?

I was thinking a gasket around one of the turbos (hoping) or worst case, the turbo itself (which it won't be because I said so and I am not paying for new ones so they must be fine... )

my car used to do this, i was still getting boost etc. turned out 2 of the studs that hold the turbo to the manifold had sheared off, and the manifold had warped slightly. not sure if this is the same noise though.

bov leaking a little? or else id suggest a manifold leak somewhere perhaps

Possibly but they on the other side of the car (although they do plumb back over to the other side) and the car isn't running rich so I can't see it being the pressure side of things.

Honestly would have to hear if it's more of a mechanical squeel or a high pressure air-ripping noise.

Maybe that's that noise I heard at Griffitth the other day...and I thought it was Mothra and Godzilla fighting

Starts as a whirrrrrrr then an almight scream. When it's low it sounds mechanical-ish but but once it's screaming it's air and lots of it.

So you've got both....that's just greedy

Hmmm sounds like a listen and point mission, just get someone to give it a good rev while you stick your head under the bonnet...once you've got a fairly localised point of refererence you can start arranging a bank loan to cover the faulty part :D

Not the water pump is it....I had one that sounded like a banshee?

When it's free-revving it's fine, only under load and boosting it makes the noise.

Yeah sorry, without being there I can't really start to make any more conclusions on it...being under load, you'd assume it must be turbo related....maybe a hose has got a slight leak...like the squeeling a balloon makes when you pinch the end of it????

That's what the exhaust shop said but be buggered if I can find it!

it's the gasket or gaskets between turbo and manifold.

happens if the bolts holding the turbo to the manifold come loose or off in my case.

I had one go missing and that corner started leaking and burnt through the gasket.

when you start accelerating, it is a whirr, then as boost goes up, so does the scream and pitch.

I didn't lose any boost or power at first but eventaully I could feel that it was slugish.

if you don't replace the gasket/s, it will eventually leak at idle and you will get like a chuff chuff sound sort of like a lawn mower at idle.

nissan turbo to manifold gaskets are not that expensive.. if I remember, on my r32 gtst, it was $27 from GCG turbo's in sydney.

that pack contained the gaskets between turbo and manifold and some smaller ones for the oil and water lines.

Ok, your explaination is winning so far! Sorry Dan

    • @GTSBoy This method was able to get readings of -10 to -2, so it looks like its monitoring.  Now I need to figure out why the vacuum on the line provided isn't alternating with manifold pressure.  I went with 2 lines that an RB25 tuner recommended but I'll get a longer hose and try directly off the back of the manifold.  He may have been used to OEM intake setups while I have a DBW setup that removed the MAF and IACV.
    • I work at a car detailing and tinting shop called Quark which gets all manner of German cars in usually (mainly due to a contract with Mercedes Benz Kita Osaka, BMW Nishinomiya and others) but every once in a while something special comes in, like a fully restored 1972 HS30 Nissan Fairlady 240ZG... The shop owner had immediately started applying film to the windows as soon as it was in the shop so the interior was completely covered in towels and plastic sheets. But I could get a few photos of the engine bay which was restored like new. Such an amazing car to see in pristine condition in Japan these days.
    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
