Hi

Once again in the search of power I am wanting to do something about my intake. When feeling over the bonnet, right above the POD is feeling like the hottest part of the bonnet. I'm guessing this is because when the air is returning back through the compressor its picking up all that turbo heat & throwing it back out through the POD.

My question is how do get the temp down. I was thinking of a Cold Air Box & some additional piping bringing cold air up into the box from the bottom of the car. I'm at work now & have not yet had a good look @ how this is going to work / fit.

Anyone who has had this problem & or how they solved it would be great. Are there pre-made cold air boxes for sale for the r33 gtst & any comments from people who have had experience with them

I currently run a t3/t4 HiFlow Turbo with a K&N Pod.

Cheers,

You can buy a could air induction box from www.nismo.com.au then simply get some ducting pipe and make a duct from your front bar to the box, wella, heat issues solved. Also, is your turbo in the stock position? And does it have the stock head shield over it.

Oww ok thanx, Hmmm $200 or $300 for carbonfibre? I'd rather something a bit cheaper full stop, custom made maybe.

My turbo is in stock position & as for head shield i dont know.... I can see the turbo, nothing covering it, is that what you mean?

Its hot not because of reversion but because you have a pod that is sucking in hot air from the engine bay. As suggested above a CIA will help your cause.

Technically reversion would keep your engine cooler due to overfuelling on release of the throttle body. It would be only a few degrees and for a few seconds though, but has nothing to do with a atmo BOV. Plumb back BOV I beleive increase intake temps, due to re-circulation but I have no evidence to support this.

do you have a Frount mounted intercooler?

if not, you will not be able to feed cold air from the bottom due to the fact that the stock cooler is there..

If you want to do something cheap, go to Clarks rubber and ask for some of that Shielded rubber/foam stuff.

then go home, get some cardboard and get in your engine bay and try to cut out a partition that would go between the angine and the pod filter.

get it perfect, then cut that shape out of the shielded rubber stuff.

when you place the new created shield, make sure the silver shielded stuff FACES the engine bay and the rubber/foam stuff faces the pod filter.

this will help a little and only cost you about $20 for a whole sheet of the rubber stuff.

cool.

you have a fmic.

so the stock cooler place is perfect for a cold air duct.

go to a plumbing store and buy 3 inch PVC piping.. get about a meter.

also buy 2 x 90 degree bends and 2 x 45 degree bends.

also get that blue plumbers glue.

now go home, cut a 3 inch hole in the panel under the pod filter, and design a cold air duct with the pipes you got so that it goes from the front bar up to the hole under the pod.

this wouldn't cost you any more than about $20.

buy some Matt black spray paint too so that once you have measured and cut the PVC piping for the CAI, and you have trial fitted it perfectly as you want it, Glue it together and then once dry, paint the thing black so that it can't be seen too easily..

NOTE. the bends that I told you to buy are great.

Once you have those and the straight pipes all together, it all fits together like lego. and it is a perfect 3 inches and smooth on the inside for better air flow. unlike those air con ducts that people use.. that flexible slinky type stuff is crap.

Hi GTST,

Did u ever have any dramas with your cai kit picking up water when it rains? We had a simular setup on my dads r33 and whenever it rained the ic would fill up with water! We were considering putting a drain plug on one of the ic end tanks!

Cheers,

Thats what happens when you use a 'everybody look at me' bov on ur car :D

??? the intercooler was filling up with water?

so you're saying, the water was going up the cold air duct pipe, somehow through the air filter, through the turbo and in to the intercooler?

that's pretty much impossible..

or are we getting our wires crossed.

you said...

We had a simular setup on my dads r33 and whenever it rained the ic would fill up with water!

I read "IC" as InterCooler

please explain..

GTST,

Thats what appeared to be happening, the air filter is an apexi super suction kit. I should add that this only happened on the highway at 100kph in consistant rain fall.

It's not so hard to believe, the air filter has a really high flow so water can get through it. With the turbo sucking in air it will pull the water through, it'll have no trouble going through the turbo and then collects in the ic because of the resticting tubes + gravity would play a part.

The 1st time i noticed it we were on our way to the dyno and it was raining. When the car was doing runs on the rollers i could see a vapour shooting out of the tb, i had a look and noticed one of the vacume lines had come off and when the car was at full song the water was being pushed up out of the cooler and shooting out through the hole!

There wasn't much water in there, a couple of power runs pretty much got rid of it all out of the hole but its something to think about.

    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
