I've done about 5,000kms since I bought my Skyline, so its about time to do an oil and filter change (previous owner had the car serviced just before I bought it). So I was just wondering what oil and filter people would recommend for the Skyline. I regularly used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a basic Ryco filter for my old car and thought it did the job well, but I've heard from quite a few people that Motul is the go for Skyline's. Can anyone confirm?

Also, what viscosity oil is best to use?

Thanks for the help.

Not trying to sound rude but there are alot of threads about oil choice and filter choice here already. Try searching!

If you're lazy then I use motul 8100 5/40 with a JIC (j-brand) oil filter. Ryco apperantly are shite - I must admit so far when I used a Ryco for about 200km my fresh motul came out black as the ace of spades. I've been using my JIC one for about 400km and the oil is still golden brown (texture like sun..).

Might be coincidence may not be - the JIC one was more expensive.

PS: I have a sr20 but I'd use the same thing on a RB.

Use a Nissan filter. You cant go wrong with them.. I wouldnt trust Ryco. In my experience they are shit.

Motul are a good oil company. Their 8100 series would be ideal for your car and you can easily do 10,000k intervals on those oils.

I always used a ryco filter.

Z145A. No problems yet.

You'll find there is much debate wether which oil is better than the other. I dont think there much all that differnce between them (with in reason mobile, motul etc.). If u plane to change it every 5000k's it probably not worth spending big bucks on top line top brand oils.

But If your loaded with cash and money no object than its a differnt story.

I using a Penrite semisynthetic oil Hpr5

5w 40

at the moment. And i dont have any complaints or problems.

I use ryco an havent had any dramas. I went to a ryco info night for work, and comparing to other popular filters on the market there either as good or better. I was even under the opinion they were cheap an nasty until I saw all of there research and comparisons...

Noticed a ryco filter on the orange S15 (when i saw it @melb autosalon)with a AWSOME RB26 under the hood thats on the cover of autosalon magazine.....so they cant be that bad

:D

I tend to use a 10w 40w oil.......(RB20det)......i tend to also stick with sem synthetic simply due to the lower cost........NOTE: I service my "normal" car (R32) every 5000klms with general driving, very little thrashing. But service the "drift " car every 2000klms.

I really don't see the need to sepnd double the amount when the oil is coming out looking nearly as good as when it went in.

    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
