also i want one of those apillar (i think thats the a pillar) guage holders... anyone know where i can buy one online? cheapest ive found so far is 120

Autospeed had a gauge test a while ago and autometer did not fair too well.

I dunno, i'm changing to an apexi gauge because im not 100% on the accuracy. If i'm 0.01psi over 12 im going to start pinging even though i cant hear it, so i need accuracy.

uas (www.nismo.com.au) or jms (www.japanesemotorsport.com.au) have some... approx 70 bux for dble.

dunno if its a good idea if you want to get those pillar thingies tho... coz i used to have one (a double) to fit my oil press and boost gauge and it made a bit of a blind spot. not so bad but still annoying. and of course the probs with cops. ended up getting rid of it.

check out my pic. all i did was just buy the cup and bracket set (mines a 2" gauge) and used the existing screw to put it into place. crappy pic... will take better ones in the morn.

nice and stealth... well almost... and not easily seen from the outside.

cool... i want it somewhere where i can see it quickly at a glance so if im caning it i can see it without taking my eye off the rd too much... doesnt the steering wheel get in the way?

steering wheel *just* out of range. depends on where you put your hands tho. if your left hand holds your wheel at the 9 o'clock pos then yes. but if your left hand is on the gear knob, your right hand on the 12 o'clock pos and your leaning towards the middle then you will see it no probs! :D

mine's only an oil press gauge tho, so i only glance at it now and then...

Yeah.....

Autometer are used for all the US drag cars.

It's obviously not gonna be as accurate as an electronic boost gauge, but it's a hell of alot better than splitfire or one of the other cheaper brands.....

A distributer once told me that Splitfire and Autometer are made at the same factory. Makes sense considering how similar Splitfire guages look to the ultralite series. In any case, I wouldn't trust any automotive guage to set boost pressure. Most of these are for interior decorating, not as a precision measuring tool. If you care for your ride, take it to a dyno and let them set boost level.

I've been through this my self when trying to set boost pressure. Guage read 12psi but I was getting a boost cut, and that only occurs at 14psi+.

I've got 2 VDO 52mm gauges in my A pillar mount and theres almost zero blind spot caused by it. I know the 60mm gauges do cause a bit of a blind spot. Theres only 8mm difference, but to look at them in a A pillar holder the difference looks massive.

The one I have, both gauges are behind the line of the steering wheel (if you know what I mean).....

I too went with VDO, they are standard equipment for a lot of Eurpoean cars and have good backup service.

I had to send my oil temp gauge back because the capilory was a little too short, they exchanged it without a question.

I can take some picies if you want to see them :)

dinesh: i dont think thats a good idea. boost pressure set on the dyno can differ from the road. for example my car was set at 14psi, get it out on the road and its nudging 1.1 bar (15.9psi)

i personally think a good guage is the best way to go. it tests the car under road conditions. the same conditions it is exposed to every day

thats ok im going to get it dynoed anyways as im doing a case by case report for all my mods which im puting on my page... with all the dyno sheets and basically a bang for buck type report

Was it set at 14psi using the dyno operators guage? Cause that kinda examplifies the inaccuracies in gauges I was talking about.

But otherwise, yeah, boost levels change under different loads or in different gears. Its the trade off we pay for using pneumatic control. Personally, I'm not too worried about a psi or 2 of creep in higher gears. By that time, the car would be pushing enough air thtough the cooler to cool down any extra heat from the turbo.

The fact remains, most guages are should be considered inaccurate until proved otherwise by testing. Still, they are useful for monitoring extremes changes in pressure.

I dont care what anyone says and that is pillar gauges do stuff with your vision and it is a pain in the arse..

once you get used to it if you move your head around them you can see everything..

So i have adjusted to them.. sometimes i hit my hand on them when palming the steering wheel

Another reason why the police book you for them is because in a accident you can hit them with your head (OUCH) But sir i have a AIR BAG :)

    • Yeah, but look at the margin in viscosity between the 40 and the 60 at 125°C. It is not very large. It is the difference between 7 and 11 cP. Compare that to the viscosity at only 90°C. The viscosity axis is logarithmic. The numbers at 90 are ~15 and ~35. That is about half for the 40 wt oil and <half for the 60. You give up viscosity EXPONENTIALLY as temperature rises. Literally. That is why I declare thicker oil to be a bandaid, and a brittle one at that. Keep the oil temperature under about 110°C and you should be better off.   Having said all of that, which remains true as a general principle, if you have indeed lost enough oil from the sump that the pump was seeing slightly aerated oil, then all bets are off. That would of course cause oil pressure to collapse. And 35 psi is a collapse given what you were doing to the engine. Especially if the oil was that hot and viscosity had also collapsed. And I would put money on rod or main bearings being the source of the any noise that registered as knock. Hydraulic lifters should be able to cope with the hotter oil and lower pressure enough to prvent too much high frequency noise, although I am willing to admit it could be the source.

    • But.... the reason I want to run a 60 weight is so at 125C it has the same viscosity as a 40 weight at 100C. That's the whole reason. If the viscosity changes that much to drop oil pressure from 73psi to 36psi then that's another reason I should be running an oil that mimics the 40 weight at 100C. I have datalogs from the dyno with the oil pressure hitting 73psi at full throttle/high RPM. At the dyno the oil temp was around 100-105C. The pump has a 70psi internal relief spring. It will never go/can't go above 70psi. The GM recommendation of 6psi per 1000rpm is well under that... The oil sensor for logging in LS's is at the valley plate at the back of  the block/rear of where the heads are near the firewall. It's also where the knock sensors are which are notable for 'false knock'. I'm hoping I just didn't have enough oil up top causing some chatter instead of rods being sad (big hopium/copium I know) LS's definitely heat up the oil more than RB's do, the stock vettes for example will hit 300F(150C) in a lap or two and happily track for years and years. This is the same oil cooler that I had when I was in RB land, being the Setrab 25 row oil cooler HEL thing. I did think about putting a fan in there to pull air out more, though I don't know if that will actually help in huge load situations with lots of speed. I think when I had the auto cooler. The leak is where the block runs to the oil cooler lines, the OEM/Dash oil pressure sender is connected at that junction and is what broke. I'm actually quite curious to see how much oil in total capacity is actually left in the engine. As it currently stands I'm waiting on that bush to adapt the sender to it. The sump is still full (?) of oil and the lines and accusump have been drained, but the filter and block are off. I suspect there's maybe less than 1/2 the total capacity there should be in there. I have noticed in the past that topping up oil has improved oil pressure, as reported by the dash sensor. This is all extremely sketchy hence wanting to get it sorted out lol.
