Rhino..

Sorry, but i find it VERY hard to believe that a 300 with only boost and zaust can pull a 13.1.

The TT models were quoted in Japan as 1580 kilos, pulling 14.5's in stock trim on 104 octane local fuel. There's a big step from there to 13.1 Maybe your mate has a little more under the bonnet than he lets on. :D

cut out some of support bar.but its still the standard bumper

had to remove grill section at bottom only and some of the bits that hold fog lights in nothing major.

the guy who fitted the tanks and pipework works from home and he's never done car stuff before (alloy boat builder).mine mounts the front of the chassis rails and ties into bonnet catch at top.

i will get you a pic soon, pity i didnt take one with bumper and support off it looks awesome then. its tapered at top to fit under headlights its so wide

as i argued in the other thread, these times are a LITTLE fast

i have 4 mates with zeds (1 has 2, dont ask:P)

1. completely stock - 14.2

2. filter exhaust - 14.34

3. filter exhaust boost(12psi) - 13.8

4. filter exaust boost SAFC - never ran down track but got beaten by shannon who runs 13.6 - approx high 13s

5. twin td06s, full race engine (475rwkw) - 12.6 spinning the whole way

from this i conclude that low 13s and high 12s are impossible with only filter exhaust and boost on a 300zx

How to run a 13 with less than 200rwhp.

And

How to get a quicker launch and 60ft time in your skyline on race day.

:)

Put it in a pintara station wagon with a single spinner diff

then youll get 13.8

But in all seriousness ive been to all but one wednesday drag meet this season, and the biggest problem i see with the r33 drivers at the drags is too much wheels spin

too Hard launches

try slipping the clutch a little go get moving and get boosting then once you are moving gradually apply the throttle, im sure your times will not suffer from this method, though your clutch may do.

I've been in contact with the guy who ran 13.1 in his Z.

He has the following mods:

Exhaust

Boost

Replaced the radiator fan with an electrically driven one ???

225 tyres

aftermarket sus.

clutch (6 months old)

And he has the heater on full bore when going down the 1/4 (he thinks it helps??)

He does a smallish burnout before each run. I'm not sure what the purpose of replacing the fan fulfills and I'm not sure how beneficial having the heater on for the run is but you can't deny the timeslip (I forgot to ask the terminal, I'll try to find out).

'Blame' his quicker time on the better aerodynamics of the Zed or the different rear-end setup of the R33's and Zeds, but at then end of the day I think it comes down to actually being able to get the best from your car. I'm the first to admit that I'm a long way from doing this with my R but I'm lucky because the 4WD takes a lot of the hassle out of the launches. But the more quick Skylines around the better in my book and things can only get faster:uh-huh:

Actually i think the motorplex is the most downhill in aus, it drops the most over the quarter that the regulations allow, so we should have the fastest track.

As for the z's, they have an insane amount of straight line traction, must be a combination of a little extra weight, and a good suspension set up. (Not much sideways traction though!)

I reckon the extra grip, the slightly bigger engine = more torque, and the two turbo set up brings boost on earlier, again more torque. Thats gotta be the difference.

yep thats my mate who's zed run 12.56 i think it's best mph was 116.5 too i think! as a matter of interest i raced his brothers z the other night and i got him off the line by about 1/2 car but by about 80k's he just flew by and pulled about 3-4 lengths on me! his car has a 2 1/2 cat back system (cats-modified) 12psi, hks pod filter, loosened (3000) std convertor and thats it, i think the reason i got him off the line is the fact that his car wheel spins quite abit due to the 225 tyres being abit small/crappy!

the fan on the z is supposed to be multi speed or something so it really doesnt cause that much of a drag on the engine apparently

plus electric fan will not pull in the same amount of air either when required! plus a zed will pick up a heap of power from the filter mod compared to a sx or line! TTZ went from 14.2? to mid 13 on the street but i guess it possibly picked up some boost from the less restrictive intake maybe?

  • 3 weeks later...

Regarding our Drag Strip..(Perth)

Apparantly we have the best conditions on the Earth..

What with hot dry days for track prep...

Cold sea breeze (Fremantle Doctor) arriving mid-late afternoon

And really sexy chics to spur you on...

Why wouldn't ya!?!?!

hey from memory with couple of small mods eg advanced timing , boost & fuel one of the sub zero's skylines ran 13.2 or 13.4 plus it was auto when nearly std! So wats this ***** low 14 sec or high 13sec stuff all about? They didn't need pineapples or any of this other crap! just GOOD simple mods & good driving i guess!

Drag racing is a skill that I doubt anyone here has mastered, or come close.

John tang's silvia pulled 11.4, but he wasn't driving. He hired someone to race it because the only times he was getting was 13's!! Imagine havin a 11 second car but could only pull 13's, You'd be pissed!!

    • Sounds more like what Brad said, that it's mainly transfer. What pad bed in procedure did you use, and did you replace/machine the rotors, or just swap pads?
    • The stutter is almost entirely in the pedal. I don't feel the brakes release and reapply as you would with ABS engaging but the pedal feels that way, without the brakes releasing. It only lasts for less than a second and the pedal is fine again. It's hard to explain, sorry.  I'll get under this weekend and just double check everything is tight. Fluid is at max where I left it.
    • What bedding in procedure did you use?   When you say stutter, what exactly do you mean? Like it feels like someone letting go of the brakes momentarily and regrabbing them again to get you to stop? Re-reading your post, and that is what it kind of makes me think you're explaining, like theres a little bit of a jolt, likely just as you're reaching a stop. I've only had this issue once. And if its caused by what caused mine, you will want to get the car up on stands again and check it over. Mine was a case of a caliper mounting bolt coming out and letting the caliper rotate on the other remaining bolt and gave play in a wheel as it came to a stop. But not every stop either!
    • Yeop... binned it   This will be a summary will not many pics atm and cbf  Fixed the samsonas - it was totally munched Put a new precision 7675 T4 on with proper split pulse mani Got to Sydney to get to car - drove to canberra to get racecar - drive back to sydney that night Next day all day at Plasmaman putting on new clamps cleaning some things up and adding another large engine oil cooler sitting at the rear above diffuser to keep things cooler Next day - Tuesday - on Dyno - killer wikid awesome pumped out really good numbers - more mid range and on lower boost levels Wednesday - first prac - all day again getting the suspension right - had to borrow front suspension again - out do a lap come in - out do a lap - in - what i had just couldnt handle the load at the more consistent higher speeds - got a lap in at the end of the day that was pretty reasonable  Put it this way that lap wouldve had me in 4th in Pro am for the whole event - with only 700 hp and used tyres Thurs first official prac day - lap out warm up - then entered a hotlap with above setting and 80% effort took corners 1,2,3 and into 4 car felt awesome -  rear came around out of nowhere bang into the wall near front on at whatever 140 kmph Done, over, gone Just one of those how did that happen apparently as all indications show nothing out of the ordinary Got to spend the rest of the time at the event like I hadnt done before - was actually Ok mainly as I had my family and my boy is 9 and got treated like a rockstar Long trip home, lost a trailer wheel in nowhere land, X5 airbag suspension gave up half way across nullabour and rode on bumps stops (its now completely fine) had to do a 19 hr drive day on day 3 as accommodation got screwed up so just had to keep driving till found a town with some Now to reassess - hopefully the motor and other things are OK but yet to be seen too. There is no easy fix there is no i'll just order that part and get it sent - we'll have a talk to people see what can happen and what the go is but at minimum its rebuild from scratch struts forward and alot of time effort and $ should and if I return and if but maybe/ when  I have the cage tied into the front strut towers - if I didnt have that things couldnt been worse you can say its just a front end but if you know what goes into these cars... you'll know what that actually means in reality   Car was very fast. Disappointing we just didnt get to show it Effort doesnt win you races though     Apparently this is motorsport !
    • Thanks, will do that.  Thankfully they still feel great.
