Hi all,

Series 1 R33 GTS25-t, stock

Engine starts to miss badly at around 3500rpm, sometimes ~4000, sometimes 4500. Tacho flicks around, no backfiring or popping. It does it under load, no load and also when you knock it back a gear on deceleration. Always around the same rpm. Will not go anywhere near redline.

Stock boost guage is indicating 350mm, bit hard to get higher than that as it won't rev high enough to get "2nd stage".

Idle is also rough, with a bit of surging.

It was suggested I changed the coil packs and have just done this with no change to the problem. I also chenged the plugs when the problem first arose.

It seems to me like it's electrical but ??????????

Any help much appreciated......

I had the EXACT same thing a few weeks ago. Even though it didnt show up on the computer at nissan, it was a coil pack. I couldn't even get it to go past 4000 rpm!!!

One of them was mysteriously missing the small spring in between the coil and the spark plug (Mystery b/c I always do my sparkies, and I always make sure the spring is there...), and the coil turned green.

Take your coils out, check you have all the springs that sit in them and give them a clean if your see any green bits.

Then Araldite the bastards as described in this thread.

That should fix your idle and 3000 - 4000 rpm hissitation!

If you still get a miss around 5500 rpm though (not like the one you had at 3500), then it is time for new coils.

Luckily for me the araldite fixed the problem, and the car pulls hard all the way through to redline.

Mate, Look at this thread http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ghlight=Missing it should answer all... don't go replacing coils and stuff yet, you would be amazed what Silicon can do when pushed between the gaps of the coil body and the metal going round the coil. U Gotta squish it through with ya thumbs! I have replaced the tape with this method and have not had a miss for a very long time... I also run the stock 1.1mm GAP now too!!!!

Yeah my RB20 was doing that probably because it had sat for over a year. I replaced the spark plugs cause they turned out to be factory and it started firing on all but one piston and then I figured out that a fuel injector was clogged so I tapped on it with a screw driver and hammer for a few minutes trying to break the injector loose and then it fired on all cylinders. I still need to run some sea foam. I also replaced the coil packs on the two cylinders not firing and I replaced my ignitor chip. I think neither of those items were bad. So just check it out and rule out all the cheap options. My situation probably doesn't apply but my point is rule stuff out with cheaper options before going all hardcore about it. I have a RB20det in my s13 and I am in the US so your motor probably hadn't been sitting for years lol.

Thanks guys, I had it on good advice to replace the coil packs so what can you do? :D

I'll check the springs, I have to admit I didn't bother as they were brand spanking new.

Excellent info in that thread Nightman, thanks!

It may be an injector, but it's smooth as a babies bum between idle and 3500rpm?????

Nope, it's not the clutch Sherrif.

  • 2 weeks later...

Problem solved! :(

Ali from Powerplay picked it.

Turns out it was the crank angle sensor. Swapped it and voila! revs like a sewing machine again! :uh-huh:

Idle is smoooooooth too.

Thanks to Joviant and Envy for the help too.

    • I know I have to get a wheel alignment but until then I just need to bring the rear tyres in a bit they're wearing to the belt on the inside and brand new on the outside edge. I did shorten the arms a bit but got it wrong now after a few klms the Slip and VDC lights come on. I'd just like to get it to a point where I can drive for another week or two before getting an alignment. I've had to pay a lot of other stuff recently so doing it myself is my only option
    • You just need a wheel alignment after, so just set them to the same as current and drive to the shop. As there are 2 upper links it may also be worth adding adjustable upper front links at the same time; these reduce bump steer when you move the camber (note that setting those correctly takes a lot longer as you have to recheck the camber at each length of the toe arm, through a range of movement, so you could just ignore that unless the handling becomes unpredictable)
    • I got adjustable after market rear camber arm to replace the stock one's because got sick of having to buy new rear tyres every few months. Can anyone please let me know what the best adjustment length would be. I don't have the old ones anymore to get measurements. I'm guessing the stock measurement minus a few mm would do it. Please any help on replacing them would be fantastic I've watched the YouTube clips but no-one talks about how long to set the camber arm to.
    • Heh. I copied the link to the video direct, instead of the thread I mentioned. But the video is the main value content anyway. Otherwise, yes, in Europe, surely you'd be expected to buy local. Being whichever flavour of Michelin, Continental or Pirelli suits your usage model.
    • Continental have consistently beaten the absolute shit out of every other performance tyre in Wet/Damp/Cold conditions and give up a little bit of time (half a second at most) in the dry. Almost like it's engineered for German conditions or something. I'd def give those a try.
