Hey all,

The steering in my R32 groans terribly when turning at low speeds and is now accompanied by a worrying (but fortunately occasional) thumping sound when you rock the wheel back and forth around the centre point while stationary.....The pump doesn't seem to be leaking, and I've tried adding Nulon power steering treatment which seems to stop the noises for a couple of months, only to come back as bad as it was before....Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks!

Hey predator, thanks for the response! I think you may be right, I had a look under the car last week and noticed the boots were a bit oily....I thought it might've been coming from somewhere else though as I don't seem to be losing power steering fluid or at least if I am it's certainly at a very slow rate..

hmmm, any idea much a reco R32 steering rack is likely to cost and where would I find such an item if I need one?

Hey, while we're here - my front brakes also creak really bad when I push the pedal in (I've got the std 4 piston sumitomo calipers), do you reckon my calipers might be stuffed as well? My discs and pads are quite worn, but I wouldn't expect them to cause this noise...

thx!

RaserR - you'd probably need it checked out properly by a suspension place.. But a new rack is around the $200-$400 mark from what I've seen. A good place to source them cheaply is from somebody that has a half-cut ... and just wanting the engine or whatever.

Its a bit of a job to replace them as you have to remove a lot of the steering components to get to it so a few hours labour ontop of the rack.

My brakes creak a bit too.. but they still seem to work pretty nicely so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
