I've got an R33 which still has the stock speakers which I want to replace with my old sony xplode splits. (in the front door)

The sonys dont fit where the stock speakers are so I'll have to remove that plastic housing thing.

After the stock speaker + housing is removed, how should I secure my sonys in the front door? Should I got down to the local hardware store and buy some MDF, cut a hole in it for the speaker, then using ?something? secure the MDF to the door.

I've got no idea, i'm no good when it comes to practical things.

suggestions, pics, etc. welcome.

Thanks, Mark

A car audio friend told me to get 3mm for the doors and 10mm for the boot - which I did.

I tried replacing the rear speakers first and that took me way too long so I haven't got around to the front ones.

At least i've taken the door trim off before unlike parcel shelf.

Mark

yeh its a time consuming thing to do. rear parcel shelf ain't too bad to do, once u know how to get the rear seats out!

3mm might be right for the front. depends on how deep ur speakers are.

i'm not sure how thick u need to go for the back. i actually used 3mm for the back and glued it to the old shelf then re-carpeted it. u need a bit of flex in it so u can actually fit it back in...

u can use the old shelf as a template to make the new one tho.

  • 2 weeks later...

I made some rear speaker mounts out of MDF using a old hacksaw blade to cut the shape and I used a self taping screw to make my holes.

A picture of what I did is here: MDF speaker mount I made and underneath view (inside boot) .

Let me know if you see any faults or if I could have done it slightly better.

I'm ready for the boot where I want to mount my amp on a 10mm piece of MDF. I've also got a 10" soundstream sub a ordinary looking box.

All speaker wireing looks like it runs down the driver side of the car and the battery in a skyline is in the boot on the passenger side. Where would be the best place to mount the amp? close to the battery on the passenger side or close to where the wiring is on the driver side?

I want the install to look good. Should I attempt flush mounting the amp and doing so will that create overheating problems?

To give an idea this is my boot my boot with the spare tyre etc. removed. I want the tyre etc. to retain the standard look, i'm thinking of making a back wall out of the MDF behind the metal bar in the boot... is this the way to go?

Thanks for the help again.

    • Sorry, are coilovers ACTUALLY ILLEGAL in NSW? They aren't in Vic, as long as they retain 70% of stock travel and the car is above 100mm off the ground. Does NSW actually have a law making coilovers actually illegal? RWC/Blue Slip/Engineering people not knowing the actual f**king laws boils my blood. Demand them to point to the documentation that states a coilover is illegal. (it may exist in NSW )
    • But seriously, can we ask for the results of the "tip a bottle of metho into a nearly empty tank" experiment?
    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
