I intend to setup the Greddy Profec boost controller as 9psi and 12psi for the Lo and Hi boost settings respectively. Once that is set up, I'll get the SAFC tuned. Does this need to be tuned for both boost settings, or just one and it's fine for the other setting. Should the SAFC be tuned when the EBC is set on Lo or Hi?

I've been wondering about this question too. Except I with to get the Jaycar iEBC and DFA which are essentially the same in function as the Profec B and SAFC. I asked a person who was organising the buy for these units and he said that if I was to tune the DFA for 16psi it'll work properly for 12psi although he didn't elaborate any further than that. Perhaps someone else can answer more specifically?

im just thinking out loudly.... but i'd say if you can set it for 9 or 12psi.. you'd tune the safc @ 12psi. To get to 12psi it obviously has to go past 9psi anyways. by tuning it to the highest psi level, its going to no what to do from 1-12psi all the time (so all your boost levels are covered).

More importantly though :P the safc doesnt realy care about boost levels. if its set to give e.g 3% less fuel @ 5000rpm, it will do that regardless of what the turbo is doing if im not mistaken.. It basicaly just controlls the air/fuel at certain rpm levels. If you took your turbo out of the car and went for a drive, the car would run pretty crap obviously, but the safc will still do the exact same thing at the exact same rpm levels as it would of with the turbo's attached :P

well, my theory is, the fuel map that the ecu uses varies due to amount of airflow

so higher the airflow, the richer a/f ratio gets

in other words, the stock ecu doesnt dump fuel in proportion to the increased airflow @ the same rpm

that's why having an safc would help to gain more in a car with increased boost than a stock car

a simple example is, stock boost @ 7psi, the a/f ratio is spot on, then at 9psi, ecu richens it by a bit so maybe say 5% richer than 7psi, at 12 psi then it runs even more richer @+10% richer compare to 7psi

and again the stock ecu takes so many things in to consideration so 5% decrease in safc doesn't mean 5% decrease in fuel in reality

with so many factors involved, that's why i'm suggesting maybe it would be a good idea to have both files in safc 2 tuned to suit different boost application

then again i'm no ecu guru so feel free to correct me

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.
