Hi All,

Ever since I got my car I'd get the shakes at about 110km. I put it down to bad balance but when I took the wheels/tyres in to be balanced I was told that all 4 rims were buckled. :O

Spewing.

Anyway, They say they can send thm off to be repaired but warned me that sometimes they come back no better than they were sent off. I put this down to them wanting the commision from a new set of rims but is it true?

Can wheels be repaired well and if you have had yours repaired are they still strong or are they now suseptable to be buckled again?

These are 18in chomies so obviously I'd prefer that they could be repaired.

What sort of prices have people paid if anyone has done it?

Thanks,

James

Yes they can be repaired. I have had four of my rims cleaned up (two of which needed rolling to remove dents), the gutter rash welded up & then repolished & clear coated. Cost $600 for the lot.

Have a good look at the rims. If they are sufficiently damaged to be out of balance it will stick out like dogs balls. If you cannot see any damage the tyre shop is telling you porkies.

well, I went into the workshop and had a look when it was spinning on the balancer and they were wobbling a fair bit. I do have super shit tyres though, cant remember the model no but they are really bad faulkens. They;ve been on it since I got it.

Would they cause it to look like that at all?

When I look at the rim from side on it looks perfectly round but I've only seen them with the tyres on. Not sure if there are dents but when I look up through the wheels I cant see any...

$600 could put you on the way to a nice new set of wheels. If I know they'd be fixed properly I'd be happy to pay that though instead of $3000 for new wheels.

I live in Tas and it wouldn't surprise me if the shops down here that do the repairs don;t know shit.

Yeah, i have a buckled wheel as well..

Get shakes at above 110km/hr.. Below that its not really notieable.. thankfully i just have to track down a spare stocker. Wasn't until I took it to a wheel place to get tyres fitted and they said "mate, your LHS front rim is seriously buckled - we can't balance it"

The tyres shouldn't effect it I wouldn't think on a spinner.. you should be able to see if its the actual rim or the tyre that is wobbling.

If its buckled, and not a crack or something, I'd just be trying to find one of that wheel.. Otherwise, sorry to say, maybe cut the losses, sell 2x as a pair, and buy a new set.

That is not correct.. MY rim appears visually fine, yet is clearly buckled when on the spinner.. And I've had two sets of tyres on it, so its not the tyres either.

Hmmm, the outer section of my rim near the tyre was, to look at, quite bad. It needed rolling out to return it to round. Still balanced up ok before it was repaired, though. So I am not sure how you would buckle a rim sufficiently badly to not be able to balance it, but then still not be able to see it on the rim.

For what it is worth to get one tyre balanced I would suggect giving it a go somewhere else before coughing up for a new set of rims.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
