Hey,

As i am in the process of renewing my insurance premium, i have been trying to shop around for some decent quotes.

After doing my research on the various jap import forums it seems as though insurance companies (namely Just Cars) give out somewhat "arbitrary" or "random" quotes.

Now i use this term loosely because i'm sure its based on some criteria..

But i am 19, 93 R32 GTST with usual mods - exhaust, pod, kit, EBC, lowered and boost guage..

I am also on a rating 4 NCB which is 30% and my renewal has been quoted at $2941. Whats the go with this?

I've read around where others are driving similar cars (R33's or the like) same age, same details.. have theirs for under 2K.

So in light of this i decided to ring Just Cars again and ask for a quote (posing as a new customer) with the same car. Got quoted 3002.

To me, it seems as though as long as i'm willing to call heaps and get a whole bucketload of quotes i'll eventually get a reasonable one.

DAMN! thats expensive!

im 23 and own a R32 Gtr and insurance for me is only $1200 (just car insurance)

with the mods, exhaust, dump pipes, pod filters, twin plate clutch, triple core radiator, coil over suspension and stereo (under $500, just new headunit)

only thing i needed for them to insure me was 2 point immobiliser, of which i have a alarm and 3 point immobiliser

rang the first time got quoted $1400 then rang again to confirm for WHEN i got the car and it went down to $1300 then rang again to actually GET insurance and went down again to $1200

so hmmm i would keep ringing around if i were you

OH and they automatically gave me a rating 1 (i was on rating 4 with last insurance company) and even gave me the option of rating 1 for life (for $50 I TOOK IT)

Good Luck

each time i rang back yes i gave them EXACTILY same details

i was SURE i did this as i didnt want them ever saying Oh wait but you didnt mention that when you got your insurance so we cant give you your money

i MADE SURE of it

RellikZypher - yeah i know its damn expensive.. i have no idea how others get such cheap premiums..

Mines very lightly modded and i have a clean driving record...

Boostzor - Yep when i called back i even omitted a detail... I didnt tell them i also had a boost guage.. and this seemed to increase the premium? .. go figure..

Well i guess i'll keep calling back then.. Any tips on gettin a lower quote?

Do you guys declare EVERYTHING on to the insurers? Even piddly little things.. like boost guages or tinted windows? I mean obivously its the moral thing to do.. but how will they know otherwise?

yes i tell them everything but not for the moral thing but to make sure they fix EVERYTHING on my car in the event of a bad thing (touch wood and dont wanna name it may jinx me) if i have paid for it on my car if i break it i wanna make sure they fix it back to the way it was and nothing less

RellikZephyr

I think its probably a case of the person on the phone having to "class" what you are telling them.

So u say u have a pillar guage and they are like "hmmm what would that come under ill put it as...ummmm undercarriage"

Remember call centre ppl have high turnover rates so you are never going to get the same level of trianing with each person you call.

Ive done the same test with a life insurance company and had the same result too.

U could always keep calling and try ure luck, make sure u get the quote number though

I'm pretty sure in insurance companies, the 'agent' you talk to on the phone earns a commission off you. Try calling them up again and again and see what qoutes can they give you. It shouldn't vary that much to be honest. I had an R33 GTST S2 with exhaust, fmic and 18", i was qouted with $1140 when i was 21.

I hope your tinted windows are a legal tint caus its a very easy way for them to get out of paying a claim.

Aren't EBC's illegal? Also another way for them to take your money but not pay a claim.

The only mods they cover are LEGAL mods and they do have a device they put over the windows to check the tint. If you have illegal mods<>driving an UNRW car they won't give you squat unless the cars stolen and never recovered (& unless of course you listed the illegal mods on the policy).

Anyhow I imagine that quote is about right for someone with a rating 4. Are you sure the others your age didn't have a higher rating?

A friend and I where discussing this a while back. First we got a quote for my postcode. Then with exacly the same details we got a quote for his postcode. The price literally doubled for my postcode simply because its 50 min closer to the city than his. That was with justcars. It really must be all about location location. Guess that explains some of the price variations but it still seems fairly random.

are you sure of that not saying you are a liar :P but i am 22 with the same mods well maybe on or two more, perfect driving record and rating 1 and i am paying like $1700

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
