  2. Yeah that's true but we are also relying on the OP's description of the event. Sometimes people do not relay 100% of the information. Maybe the tuner described the possible side effects of a leaking injector? The customer installed the injectors himself? Or maybe has done other things which has brought about the initial problem? Like supplying his own injectors that didn't come with pintle caps

Considering he has named the shop I suggest everyone takes a second thought about posting about his abilities without knowing first hand what happened. To start with: Why does your 'brand new' PE injectors come without pintle caps? The story smells a little bit. There is more to it than what you are saying

  6. OMFG Pouring fuel into your cylinder will not glaze your bores. Running a FRESH engine at 9:1 over a 1000-5000km period will. Fuel doesn't just automatically and magically reduce the depth of your hone marks after 30 seconds Advising that tuners are talking shit or don't know what they are talking about and that people should get their cars outta there pronto based on a forum posters description of a problem based on their limited mechanical knowledge is not a good idea. It is also not sound advise. To the OP: How did your tuner put too much fuel in that cylinder? I cannot see the car but it is extremely hard to tell an injector to pump that much fuel into a cylinder. Depending on the size of the injector of course. If I was a betting man I would say your problem is the actual injector or the ECU controlling it. If there is an open circuit there, it will cause the injector to stay open all the time. If it locked on cranking then yes the rod can bend. You can test for this without removing the pistons and rods by doing a piston height test using a dial gauge. It will tell you if the piston is sitting lower in the bore. A comp test will also reveal any major bends but won't tell you if it's 0.005" bent Do a comp test and an oil analysis to determine bearing failure and if it all comes back good it should be ok and healthy

  9. Not sure if you're serious or taking the piss but you'd be extremely surprised how many tuners DO NOT use knock detection on their dyno. I know of at least 4 in the greater Brisbane area and not only don't use it, but when challenged about it, simply state how good they are they are able to detect knock without the need for a knock detection device. I can tell you I was very surprised when I also thought I had a good ear for that sort of thing then someone put a headset on me and proceeded to pull 8 degrees of timing out before I could stop hearing it knock. The car made 10rwkw less after that. The customer didn't blow it up.

  12. Yes, when a cylinder head is presented to a competent engineer for rebuild or refresh they generally take off 0.005" or 0.008" when they have slight warp. More than 0.010" is severe. My point is, just because the head was shaved, doesn't mean everyone needs to run out and add 0.5mm (0.020") in thickness to their head gasket. My personal experience is that it's stupid to rely on one person to do it all. 1. Chilton Engineering do all my engineering work - no I DO NOT rely on them to measure bearings or get clearances right, I blueprint all my engines personally. 2. Even though I am quite capable of honing a bore etc, why would I do that myself when there is someone like Chilton to do it for me who does it every day and have done for the last 50 years - yes they have been around for that long. They have the million dollar equipment to do the job to a level of perfection that I cannot achieve. 3. I do not tune cars. Sean from EFI Performance tune cars. Sean is probably one of the best tuners in this country and it has taken me several years to find him. I can tune cars. How stupid would it be for me to start tuning cars when Sean (used to be) tuning one street away? I'd waste days and weeks of time competing with another business that specialises in doing that one thing 4. I am so confident in the quality of my engineer and my tuner that I can actually give warranty on a 700hp engine....and do. It's not a good idea for a customer to go to several different places to get work done but it is even worse to expect a workshop to do everything.....and to expect the highest quality from every part of the job. Do one thing to perfection and allow others to do other things to perfection. It's teamwork IMO. @ WMDC35 - yes it can be frustrating having problems with workshops. It's even worse, though, when we get cars dropped off and they are an absolute mess because they weren't aware of how to do the job properly. It's more than nuts and bolts with these things. Doing odd jobs yourself is great if you wanna learn, but expect to pay more when it needs to be fixed.

People who want to make 400rwkw need to know this type of thing to be able to make their own decisions. At the end of the day, it's the customer's car or the owner of the vehicle that decides what they want. If you can make the power you want without changing the standard intercooler than I will be the first person to recommend keeping it, all my customers will agree with me there. I definitely don't recommend changing things that are not needed. If you don't make the power then change it. But be prepared for it at least. It makes the tuners job so hard trying to explain why your car doesn't make power when they swear black and blue the internet told them it would
  14. We've also got Power Spirit (china) 100mm intercoolers on about 6 or 7 cars making 550-600rwhp and on 2 cars making over 800hp at the wheels They aren't that bad
  15. I am definitely not saying you are wrong but I just cannot see it happening on a standard intercooler. Every second day we see cars run out of flow on the dyno because of the intercooler. Even larger cores etc when you get up over the 500hp mark. We rarely see factory GTR coolers get over 400hp at the wheels. That's not to say it cannot happen and I'm certainly not saying that, but when you have 5 guys who apparently make 350-400rwkw on stock coolers but I can think of at least 4 times that many that failed to make much over 300rwkw, is it fair to say it's not a good idea to expect it to work because 5 people have done so? I don't think 350rwkw is too much to ask but 400rwkw+ is a bit of a stretch IMO. Unless running alcohol, 100mm core is required for enough flow to see 400rwkw efficiently. Obviously it comes down to heat and density as well so a GT60 is going to do better than a GT35R at pushing the air through because the air 'should' be cooler on the bigger turbo that flows more. Twins will also have that effect but not to the extent you are suggesting.
  16. Yes that should work. The big hose to the right of it goes up to the balance chamber which is after the throttle plates. The map sensor line can go to anywhere that sees vacuum and boost
  17. No, it's usually a hard missfire but it is something worth checking regardless. I would also check the coil charge time in the ECU as this is a very common mistake/problem

  19. I'd keep it under 40psi for E85 on a standard engine. The gudgeon pins will thank you later. The turbo will fail before the engine will as long as your tuner is competant

  23. How is there a higher effective load on the piston from running greater ignition advance? The fuel is higher octane so it burns slower. The ignition is advanced because the engine needs to start the burn earlier to get the best complete burn in the cylinder. The cylinder pressure should be pretty much identical at equal hp outputs. Shouldn't the load increase only once you get past the efficient timing range only?
