  1. I remember reading somewhere on here in the past that someone had tried some large pc computer case fans on there remote mounted oil cooler, as they weren't able to find a thermo fan small enough. My oil temps aren't exactly out of control, but I do have a couple of 120mm and 200mm case fans from old pc's not put to use. Most pc fans seem to flow less than 50cfm, I've seen some jaycar ones that flow 100cfm but that still doesn't sound like it's enough to be effective? Has anyone found a small enough thermo roughly 15cm's wide? (to fit a greddy oil cooler) that works? Or, has anyone actually had good results from using a large case fan/s?
  2. I have a number of standard ecu's for anyone on here that is having stock computer problems that require a replacement. They came off cars in perfect condition that were upgraded to power FC/Haltech etc. It's always good to have a stock ecu spare for those who have "plug in" style engine management. These are what you'll need to clear defects, and are also good for diagnosing electrical gremlins. 1 x GTI-R Pulsar 1 x CA18DET manual 1 x SR20DET silvia manual 2 x 180sx SR20DET manual 1 x S14 VCT manual 1 x Aus version s15 sr20det manual 2 x Jap Spec R s15 sr20det manual 1 x RB20DET R32 GTS-T manual 1 x RB25DET R33 GTS-T Series 1 manual 1 x RB25DET R33 GTS-T Series 1 auto 5 x RB25DET R33 GTS-T Series 2 Manual $100 Each Pickup - $125 delivered Australia wide. 4. This is a good Thread. I just did this mod today, here's some pics. There were 3 sizes of this tape at my local Bunnings in Brisbane. The one pictured was $21 for 10 metres. It also came in packages of 3 metres, both narrow and wide (like this one pictured) diameter rolls for around $9 and $12 respectively. I recently did an oil cooler relocation from behind the FMIC to the driver's side guard of my RB25 180SX, and air that use to cool down from the intercooler was heating back up again as the oil cooler was just next to the pipe down in the guard area - Similar situation with the change of the cast manifold to a stainless item, the intake pipe was getting hot to the touch, but now only feels warm. ... Before; After FMIC driver's side pipe insulated from the driver's side oil cooler It was a sorry sight to see the clean pipework go, but this is a useful modification, not a pretty one. Time for the air box enclosure mod tomorrow

    Thermo Fans

Just an update on this - I installed a new alternator using the helpful alternator guide on these forums, and removed one of the SPAL fans, and replaced it with a lower rated (and less amp drawage) thermo from Repco. My RB25 180Sx is still giving me 80 degrees water temp and the alternator is running at 14.1 at startup and goes to 13.8 with the fans on. Due to this I now have the SPAL fan I removed for sale if anyone is having cooling problems (check my signature), this fan with a regular/slimline pusher should fix your overheating problems. Cheers.
  6. Perfect conditon Spal Thermo Fan for sale. This is the exact fan - Part #VA01 - AP70/LL - 36S ; http://www.spalusa.com/fans/automated/tech...s/2038-2025.pdf As pictured; . It's a 12" push style fan from there high flow series. This is not a flimsy POS davies craig style fan. They have a good thick area for where you can mount the fan as seen in the pics. These fans in this style are hard to get a hold of here. I purchased this new from the USA myself. These measure 13" wide x 3.2" deep and flow a max of 1630cfm just from the one fan. I had two of these installed on my RB25 180SX, but removed one, as the strain on the alternator was too much. I'm now running one of these fans, alongside a Repco regular 12" pusher fan, and can run the car at 80 degrees water temp constant no problems. (for reference, 2 of these fans ran at 76 water temp which is pretty good for an RB conversion). Brisbane - Southside at Sunnybank. If you already have a thermo fan installed, you can simply unhook the one you have and hook this one up instead. Price is $175 pickup, or $200 delivered Australia wide. Check my signature, and contact those people for my positive trader history. I am happy to post more pics if you require just ask. I accept paypal payment - PM me with your email address and delivery address and I will send you a automatic payment request. Item will not be put on hold! Don't post if you are not interested - Cheers.

  8. Back from the dead What is the part number on the tage of the 90amp series 2 alternator you installed? I've just removed my 80amp alternator using the guide on the forums here, and really need a 90amp one to cater for my twin thermo fans. I've seem recommendations about using bosch ones, but i've read that the plug is different to my current Nissan branded, but mitsubishi made alternator from a series 1. cheers.

    Thermo Fans

LOL that is a lot!... these are the ones i have - the table in the lower left corner says at least 15amps per fan, not sure what the static pressure stuff is about but it says 1630cfm each; http://www.spalusa.com/fans/automated/tech...s/2038-2025.pdf here's a pic; http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/3009/1787815en3.jpg

Put it this way, my alternator is stuffed and the power fc is showing as low as 11.6 volts ad idle. at first startup the car is at 13.6 volts, after driving for a while, and the water temp hits 75 degrees, my pivot fan controller turns on the fans. by that time, the alternator has reached normal operating temperature, and is at 12.8volts max when it should be at 14v. When the fans turn on it is going down to 12.2 which is pretty horrendous. It has always been this way from the first day I installed the spal fans. They're definitely heavy duty fans, not your average run of the mill items. I would love to use them as a pull setup, but there's no space even for a slimline, with my 53mm koyo radiator. The variable speed controller should limit the drawage at half speed, but when you turn it up (i'd advise slowly) if your alternator is more than say 7/8 years old and is the stock 80amp rated one, then you could run into the same problems I have had. I'd be interested in hearing what the alternative alternator was that was used by somone who i think suggested it in this post. I've been to Ashdown's here in Brisbane, and they say that 80amps is the highest rated alternator for the RB series engines, but there was a 90 amp item from a cedric? which apparently used an rb25DE (no turbo). The only option to definitely fix the problem would be to get a holden/ford item at 130+amps, but the alternator belt depth and length would be way out. Any input for those that have used alternators from a different car much appreciated. I'll see how a new replaement alternator goes next week, and if it the voltage still drops plenty, then I'll install the new spare repco one I have as a comparison, and sell the spal on here for someone to copy my setup.

    Thermo Fans

If I could use a clutch fan I would. I've got an RB25DET in my 180sx, with 2 spal high flow fans. the thick ones not the thin crap ones like davies craigs. the problem is the spal fans draw 15 amps each, and the alternator can not cope with it. 80amps simply isn't enough. I had it rewound to 120, to find that the higher winding means the alternator does not charge until it has more revs. My rewound alternator lasted about 3 months. I have my fans wired up to a pivot fan controller and the fans are on 30 amp relays. Sure the fans flow a shitload of air but now i've got electrical problems. it doesn't help that i've got a boot mounted battery, even if it is an optima yellow top d34. At the moment I'm going to buy a new alternator as the one i originally began with was a stock one from a s1 rb25det. put simply it had had it's day at over 10 years old. I'm going to remove one of the 12" spal fans and install a repco 12" fan rated at 8 amps (basically, your run of the mill cheap china medium sized fan). Hopefully 22 amps drawn at once, instead of 30 amps is not going to be too much for the alternator to cope with. When I took the alternator back to the sparky he said it was a diode, seperate to the regulator. I'd recommend installing extra grounds for the alternator too.
  12. Hi all, I'm after a quick confirmation on an alternator comparison. I have an RB25DET series 1 engine in my 180SX, and it has a Mitsubishi alternator on it. I'm not sure if this is what usually is meant to come with it, or if it's meant to be a Hitachi or Bosch one instead. My current reco'd alternator has had it so i want a new one. I rang Ashdown who is an alternator wholesaler here in Brisbane. They said they have 2 alternator types as a replacement, for the serial number i provided that was written on my current alternator. But they are listed as a replacement for the RB20DET. This is what my tag on the alternator says; 23100 70T13 A2T37791B <--- They said this is the number to search by. 12V 80A 55091 MITSUBISHI And this is what the guy at Ashdown faxed me as a replacement; advising the Mitsubishi style replacement is $289 and the hitachi replacement is $400 Can someone with a R33 GTS-T RB25DET post up the numbers on the tag of there alternator? Should I go for the $400 hitachi one instead? would there be some type of plug difference between the hitachi and the mitsubishi? Thanks!
