  1. I got my car back on the road for the festive season and it went well for several days. Does anyone remember me splitting my stock harmonic balancer in two last year? To avoid that misery I again I invested in a Professional Products Powerforce Plus SFI racing spec Harmonic Balancer, and had it shipped over from the USA, and bolted it to the front end of my L28 late last year. In less than 2,000 kms I did this to it. It has actually split in two, and the outer section spins freely around the inner section. Who'd have thought?
  2. Dan, looks great. Graham, figure out that digital camera - I want to see some pics of that engine bay, it's already next year! Seriously, I'd like to hear about your car, start a new thread and let us know how it goes.
  3. Settle. If anyone is interested PM me for my mates number and you can deal with him directly.
  4. A mate of mine has come back from Japan with some JDM parts for skyline C210: Over-fenders (uncut) so good for 2 door or sedan may suit 240k also, original c210 electric fender mirrors in black (not chrome), and some centerlines for 4 stud Datsun. If anyone is interested I can give you his details. He is Melbourne based but will probably post.
  5. Merry Christmas guys, and big thanks to all who helped me out with advice and info this year - I wouldn't have the car on the road this Christmas without you!
  6. finders? fingers.
  7. I've had the stalk let go before. At least it's easy to test... plug in another one under the dash and cross your finders. The wiper motor is irritating to replace when your hands dont fit in the vents!
  8. My wiper motor died this Saturday as well! I thought it would be the fuse or the control stalk, but it was the wiper motor itself. Sorry, not very helpful, just feeling your pain! D
  9. Going a little of the topic, but apparently 2 Victorians found a cheap C210 sedan a couple of months ago and entered it in the Red Centre to Gold coast trial this year. They came fourth. Banzai!
  10. bummer... you'd think there'd be enough of a market that there would be more of them around at a reasonable price. I do like the sound of having a hardy copper gasket made, if it's not horribly expensive. The reason Im interested in all this is I had a play with the old Lengine calculator and it recons Im only making about 9.8 to 1 compression, which isn't exactly mind-blowing. Has anyone played about with machining the heads and using shims to avoid valve clearance problems? Or is this path also wasting a lot of cash for a nominal amount of additional compression?
  11. I can probably help you with a manual conversion though. Im in Melb if that's any use to you.
  12. Bloody hell. For $300 I would have snapped that up in a second. There is a beat up c210 at centre road springvale, no motor no box no seats, and they want $650! Faaaaark. You just dont find $200 Skylines anymore.
  13. Seeing I've got the head off at the moment, might be a good time to go to a 1mm gasket and up the compression a bit. Trouble is other than a Kameri item (japan via usa!) I'm having trouble hunting one down. Any ideas? Apparently Fel-pro do one, but there website is pretty vague.
  14. Actually, when the throttle jammed on I panicked and put the clutch in for a couple of seconds (rather than... you know, just switching off the bloody ignition). My lovely new engine saw w-a-y the wrong side of 8,000 rpm. I suck. Cam timing was miles off. Who'd have thought I'd ever need a rev-limiter... I'm so careful and all. Also hang onto those calipers for me Mags, Ill make a time to come get them soon. D
  15. Removed head today. The pistons have made contact with the valves, and the timing was miles out, chain must have jumped a few teeth. The valves look pretty good, but there is minor scoring on the pistons. Ill throw on my old E88 head, reset the timing and hope that there aren't any hairline cracks in the pistons.
  16. No no. Ill just redo the head and timing gear. It's not like I haven't had much practice (bangs head on keyboard). This'll be what... the sixth time.
  17. There is a little black plastic pack on the back of your alternator. It is full of diodes. Diodes that are usually broken - causing all manner of electrical mayhem. Have a look inside and make sure they are still in one piece. Cheap to fix though - give it to an auto electrician to sort, or look for another 2nd hand one in better shape.
  18. I didn't hear smashing crunching valves, the car just stalled and wouldn't start again - really odd seeing I had been booting along the freeway only minutes before. The exhaust is new, but say, just for example, someone shoved a banana up it, would that result in the car not being able to generate enough compression to fire? The first thing that I'll do when I get home is have a look to see if the timing chain is actually turning the crank and pistons. Cheers for the offer on the E88 J, Ill let you know. D
  19. It took me months to build that bloody L28 - its coming out over my dead body! Hopefully its something fairly minor and stupid... maybe I got the timing chain to jump half a dozen teeth... err... somehow.
  20. I've had it in my head that I wanted to impress all comers at the NDSOC show and shine this year (in 3 days time). I built an sexy looking L28, sprayed my engine bay, and recently had the body sorted an resprayed as well. Unfortunately, driving home from the painters on the highway tonight the throttle caught on some plastic under the dash and jammed open on full for about 5 seconds. Nothing seemed amiss till I reached my first red light 30kms later and the car stalled. Attempts to restart resulted in a very unhappy noise - the engine turning over, with the utter absence of a compression note. I have been towed home and will have a look tomorrow. It seems the pistons and the valve train have got a divorce somehow, possibly in the form of a thrice dead harmonic balancer, or a stripped timing chain gear, or... I don't even want to know what. BUMMER! If I can't make the show and shine my feelings are definitely going to be hurt. Deeply hurt. At least my car looks friggen' unreal, maybe Ill just push the damn thing to the show! Anyway... off to see how quickly I can get, like, seriously drunk.
  21. it's really informal, just turn up with a tenner and park your car with the others! It's more a chance to meet other Dat-fans than a deadly serious concourse event. Ill buy a proper camera and post some pics. d
  22. Nissan Datsun Sports Owners Club show and shine is on this weekend. Hopefully the weather will be a bit better this year, but last year had a pretty good turn out anyway. Cars are on display on Southbank promenade Melb city. Turn up with your car before 9.00am, leave after 3.00pm, entry from South bank avenue. $10 to show off your pride and joy. Or swing by to have a look any time. I'll be the scruffy looking guy with the freshly painted C210 sedan.
  23. I first got this horrible grinding metal on metal noise about a year ago. I replaced pads (twice), put new kits in, did the wheel bearings, new anti-rattle springs... and so on, but still couldn't get rid of the damn noise. Finally I took the car to an engineer who simply grabbed hold of the handbrake cable, gave it a yank, and the caliper clunked - there was buckets of play. I tried replacing that caliper and sure enough the noise went away. I don't know if the same side let go as last time, but when you are dealing with a 30-year-old second-hand part these things are going to happen.
  24. Unreal. Wont need the front (mine are Hilux) but the rear would be great. You can leave it with Randy or better yet, swing by the NDSOC show and shine this Sunday at Southbank. Ill be there all day. Cheers Drew
