ok so ive been a bit busy at work but ive had some small progress none the less....ive got hold of some original Rx/808 seats for the car(as the ones that were in it were incorrect)So i need to get them trimmed...but problem is the GT's had a symbol embossed in the headrest...Lucky for me i have a CNC machine centre so now i have to make some branding dies....getting hold of a picture of the symbol seems to be impossible....so i borrowed a japanese brochure off a mate.It had an angle shot of the front seats....so ive roughed it out in CAD and put a pen in the chuck and drawn a 2D picture....I still need to do some fine tuning/resizing and reverse the image then i will machine up the branding die

ok here is the rotors,as you can see the side seals come longer so you can file them back to the clearance you want....this takes ages,my view this is the part that can make or break the engines reliability(not just side seals but all the clearances as there are many others)
these are the oil control rings that stops the oil that flows through the centre of the rotor entering the combustion chamber, the oil lubes the centre bearing and cools the rotor itself. The oil control ring is metal with an o ring that fits inside the outer ring and inside the inside ring
rotaries get built from the front to the back so we start with the front plate, fit the stationary gear(which has also been carefully clearanced)
aftre being bent over from both nissan and mazda i have lots of vaseline left so coat the front plate with it
then prep up the front of the first rotor by fitting all the seals and springs, the corner seals have tiny springs under them,as do the side seals and oil control rings
here is the front rotor covered is vas ready to be dropped onto the front plate
then fit the backside of the front rotor with all the same gear
and your ready for the housing, these rubber bands are a sort of head gasket. The inner one is made of some strange heat proof material as the combustion heat and gas give it a hard time
the join part of it goes near the intake
i like to use threebond in the groove
then drop the housing on and fit the dowls in
this is the apex seal and sring
and slide them down the corner of the rotor
next drop on the centre plate, insert e shaft/rotor housing and build up the next rotor then rear housing/tension bolts and the core is finished

ive made the titanium flanges and started welding ....i weld titanium quite regularly and everytime i do i sit there in awe thinking....the colours....oh the colours
-
What colour is the car going to be?
im not a fan of white.....but unfortunatley id like to keep the car original so white it is ...although the white it is now is incorrect....the real white is an oche shade(more dirty)
Watching this thread with interest I still remember your yellow R34 GTR refinishing thread - I expect this one to be just as good!
im glad to hear i have at least one dedicated watcher the gtr rebirth was indeed quite a deep and lengthy exercise, and it was a while ago(7 years????)and yes i still have the old yellow peril, but
as stated with this one im a bit happier coz i hope the finished thing will be worth more money

these are genuine new old stock ......these would have been deleted many years ago...im guess very hard to find if not impossible now!
-
well ive set myself a goal to mess around with two parts a day....that way i figure when i get around to assembling it after im done with the body everything will be ready and up to standard....so today ive taken apart the tail lights as the lenses are weathered and the gaskets are stuffed letting everything from dirty/water and spiders inside....there was a few spider carcass's inside ....ive washed them in good old morning fresh and scotch brighted the out sides with matting paste and cleared the lense's with 2k clear to make them look new again....and these are the reg plates old got for it

By "not using the trumpets" I assume you mean you're going to get the non - anodised ones, just the plain alloy? Those have been around as long as Webers, so I presume period enough? (that's what I was using in the 80's)
yeah they are a bit loud looking.....plus the car will be used regularly on the road so im not sure if i like the idea of loads of crap running through the intake......i was thinking of using an original aircleaner assy with the base modded to fit onto the throttle body...could be a bit restrictive but....i have to think about it a bit
-
i dont think that they used titanium back in the day and call me a wastefull bastard but this is the what my extractors look like at the moment I plan to make a set of lobster style headers, then a full system....it seems to weld nice aswell, which is a bonus.....if i have to make ears bleed to make me smile....oh well
-
Well you obviously know the right people. How did you get this MFR stuff??
i currently have no more organs left to sell Ive been saving this stuff up for a while for when something a little special came up....and i thought this was the perfect car to use it on.....i could have bought a series1 rx7 and built a moffett replica but i personally think they look like a busted ars***le
-
these are the stationary gears again new mazda factory racing parts....these were very hard to get, although i have been told that you can use late model 13b gears and machine them down (the early MFR gears are nitrided and so was the 13B turbo gears) but these are genuine and it makes my brain work better knowing that they are the 12a "racing" units that moffet and katayama used
-
The "piston rings" again mazda factory racing parts
-
Yeah there is very little in aus, which is a shame. So when I am ready look in Japan!.
Good 12 housings are hard enough to come across now a days but you have NOS factory racing items!!!
yeah very hard to find....i got two MFR 12a PP sets and one set of MFR 13b PP housings!
-
this is the "piston and 3 combustion chambers in one" these are brand new mazda factory racing units
-
mazda factory racing inlet manifold and injection throttle body. The throttle body is a direct bolt on to any manifold that takes a webber/solex carb and converts to efi.I dont think i will be using the trumpets as they dont really fit the era of the car

I can't believe for the same money I paid for the GTR 8 years ago I could have bought 3-4 RX3 coupes. Now good luck getting one for a reasonable price let alone finding one.
Nice score. Will be fantastic with period mods and a nice 12a PP!!!
Can I ask how you sourced the car in Japan? Aren't the locals buying these up as well so finding one for export is difficult?
yep hindsight is wonderful huh?I do know of 2 other GT rx3 coupes in japan for sale (one of which i painted over ten years ago!) and familia coupe (r100) so they are around and for sale.
I look around here and found nothing but 808's converted into rx3's with autometer tacho's,roll cages and autobarn race seats for no less than 13k was the very cheapest....on the other end 30k for gen rx3 but with again roll cage/turbo engines but nice cars....just not original/period correct....im about to start building the engine....for those that dont know these first pics are the "engine cylinders/block and camshaft's" all in one and these are mazda factory racing units.I will show some pics of the engine being assembled as i go

ok heres the rear seats back after retrim.....someone had changed the front seats over the years so had to find those(found now) and they are still getting done.....75 GT's had these funky washers in the centre insert and leather was also an option which the owner took on my car....Im also about to build up the factory race engine with a bunch of new old stock stuff i got here....i will post the pics when i get going on it
-
Please please please don't put simmonds rims on the car...like every other Capella/RX2/808/RX3 out there
I love these cars
PP 12a will be awesome!
i think that when these cars are built up to keep with the theme of old mods simmons are something that was used in the old days so to make the car period correct they get used.....or those old jelly bean wheels/dragways....its not like you can put newer wheels on .....i dont think there is much choice
-
not bad. I believe there is a place that does repro stuff for these. phils rotary in lawnton could probably help you with that.
nice find!
yeah unfortunatly his stuff doesnt fit to well

and here it is before loading onto truck in saitama

heres one,its pretty dirty but its all there and original.....very hard to find indeed

sound like injector cut is coming in....the ecu sees via throttle sensor that the throttle is closed and its seeing the rpm exceeding what it deems to be a normal idle speed so it pulls the power to the injectors.....you have a vac leak or BAC valve is letting too much air past
