Who Likes Track Days? Who's Scared Of 'em? Who Can't Afford It?
OZ GTR35 replied to Abo Bob's topic in New South Wales
Abo, Interesting thread! All, I am a track pig, no questions asked. I have done about 40 track days in street car's over the last 6 years. I thought it might be interesting to share my experiences. R33 GTS. 4 track days 100% stock nil issues and the same set of tyres. R33 GTR 10 track days, small mods PFC and bleed valve. 2 set's of tyres, lasted 35,000 KM each. On day Bang 1 x engine snapped an inlet valve. (Car had 100,000Km on it) R33 GTR (Same one) 15 track days, re-build, turbo's and sump baffle, 2 x sets of tyres with 30,000Km each. R34 GTR, 8 track days. Turbo's, oil cooler, PFC sump. 2 Sets of tyres 25,000km out of some toyo trampia's and 20,000km our of the Toyo T1R's. If you want to become a track pig because you have the track bug, spend $5-10K on coolers, turbo's and ecu. If you dont, you do run the risk of damaging something, skylines are great cars but do 1000's of hot laps at wakefield, Oran and the creek does take its toll on a std parts But my point of view if you are a 1-2 year track driver, all you need is a good running car with brakes, if your car has dodgy brakes, the track is not the place to be. Tyres, easy, wear out the edges on the track and the rest can wear out on the street. -

Hold the press! I just checked my only other recorded lap time of OP Sth on the UAS web site. I clocked 51.9, not 50.9 I had my own delusions of grandeur. This means I improved my lap time by .8 sec. John we will have to discuss this further face to face! -

Yes, Well a disappointing 51.1 on the slicks, this was .2 seconds slower then my best time on T1R toyo's. I managed to destroy the slicks in 2 sessions. After showing the tyres to a few people I have made my mind up on the reason why they only lasted 30 min. 1. The camber, had the wheel alignment is only 1.3 Deg, not enough for the race track. 2. Std Suspension does not suit slicks as the body roll really works the edges and slicks need a more square contact to the road. I have some great in-car footage, of the Boat leaving me down the straight. The boat puts about 50 Meters on me and there was nothing I could do john you will love it, you can show it to all your boat fans. I will have to post up the "I don’t know how to stop footage!" as I watch John almost hit the tyre wall. Your right, the driver does make a big difference. I did notice I was turning 2 early into the last turn which was affecting my exit speed. I did fix this up by the end of the day. I guess 240KW @4w vs. 380Kw Rw on a lighter car gives you the advantage I will hunt down some semi's for the SAU GP day in 4 weeks. Now with respect to the bet, you improved your time by about 1/4 of a second? I did not improve at all, so that about 1/2 a case of corona coming your way. I am a man of honour! See you at the next one captain of the boat, my arch race track enemy! -
Distroyed my slicks in 2 sessions. Only clocked a 51.1. The wife pushed out a 58.5 Moanie's car went bang on turn 1. Ouch!

BWA, Most people own performance cars, and never really understand why they bought them. You are about to find out! I look forward to seeing the ear to ear grin you will be wearing.

I would like to see a head to head challenge between a 300z and a GTR, same year, same $ value on Mods. Measurement would need to be 1/4 and track times with a street metric around general drivability. Without a workshop or a performance mag behind the project the argument will never be solved, I would have a feeling at sometime someone would have done this. I guess the discussion at hand is as follows. "Is the UAS 300z faster then Paul's GTR?" The answer is fcuk yeah!, any workshop should be ashamed if it could not make this statement. I can put all excuses on the table but the answer is this 300z is a quicker track car, but I know of a 121 with a rotary which is quicker then both of us, but no one will ever say 121's are better then GTR's or 300z's. I have only one goal, pay the UAS mechanics to slow Johns car enough for me to smack his ar$e, its only a matter of time before I eventually win! One day I will own JP and it will be a fine day, yes a very fine day! -
Yogi, Yes it is Ralph, and the WRX guy is Steve. The WRX is a nice car 185Kw at the wheels with adjustable suspension, but he still only has street rubber. He did really well at the Aaron McGill GP CCT, both of them did. Are you coming?

I have 2 friends with a stock 200sx and a WRX coming as well.

For those who want to come and see both the cars head to head, come out to the UAS track day Oran Pk 2nd April. I will have a set of second hand slicks and John will have his new set of semi's. Should be a good day for all involved. -

Well, well, well. "We are here because Johny boy cant cut it as a man any more" Quote The Simpsons "War of the Simpsons" Season 2 Disk 4 . And just as homer cought General Sherman out at cat fish lake, Im going to catch a 300Z and eat him for breakfast! Note the above quote is for hard core simpson fans only and now for everyone else. John I think we should make a little side line bet here. Im thinking a case of corona for every .5 sec our cars better our previous fasted lap times at OP South. This removes the who spent a $Gazillion or who has a simple street car! If your in let me know and its game on! -
Chat to UAS ref number of available slots.

I did not go, but it would have been nice to be out there with a few less people. I guess the day events are all thats left.

Well, Well Well where do I start. Perhaps we start with the obvious differences. John ---> Paul 1. Boo Hoo Hoo I have sh!ty slicks ---> Street tyres with 30,000 Km 2. 1000 hours of workshop time ----> change oil ever 5000km .5hrs 3. 1 gazillion $ in mods -----> $10K 4. Nothing standard ----> brakes, suspension internals drivetrain std 5. Spends weekdays in bits ---> drives to work every day with 2yr old boy in the back 6. track trim with a 300z shell ---> street trim wih tools in boot for when 300Z brakes down 7. 26psi boost ---> 10psi boost 8. Workshop car ---> familty car The best thing about it is that not only am I your only conquest, but your proud of it, now thats gold. By the way I saw a NA S13 auto kick your a$$ last time we went out. Do you have a responce cashew boy or are you thursty for more? -
John I look forward to hunting you down like a Jap whaleing boat chasing a hump back.
-
I have booked myself into the UAS drive day on the 2nd April. If you are interested contact UAS or go to www.nismo.com.au It is the South circuit only, but well worth the the blat!
