hey all, i'm going for rego on friday - 1989 r32 gtst. my problem is this - it has 17" Skyline GTT rims on it, but the tyre placard says 16". For some reason, the engineer wouldn't engineer them (no idea why). i'm not sure if they'll care as it's 15yo and they have the same rolling diameter. i guess one way out would be to have some 16" rims for rego - would anyone have a set i could borrow for friday? any ideas? any input at all would be *great*. sigi

Hey Nugget, did they check side intrusion bars?

i thought only sperm whales were black? -
i understand that there are plenty of things i could do myself, specially after lots of chats with others on this forum (thanks DAN00H!). I did entertain the idea for a while. while i trust myself with a bandsaw and a setsquare, I don't trust my handiwork with fitting car safety stuff. I realise I'll only need side intrusion bars in certain unlikely circumstances, but in those circumstances i will want them to work like nothing else and i'm not prepared to negotiate my passenger's wellbeing on it. i prefer to get Nathan to do it - he sounds like a great bloke and I have no problems going with Grey Imports. at the end of the day, i'd rather just pay the fees and know it's done right. my time is valuable (and this is something that shows like auction squad and the like don't emphasize - sure, you can do a lot yourself, but do you have time?).

Don't think the RTA is who you want for the cover note - it's your insurance company. But they won't give you one (I bet money on it). However, the RTA can give you a temporary permit to move an unregistered car, which includes CTP. Only lasts for a short time though (28 days). This is what you want: Application for Unregistered Vehicle Permit: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/publicationsstat...ds/45070190.pdf Sigi

i don't mind a wiki now and then, but the two main issues are: - keeping it up to date - keeping it accurate the reason wikipedia works so well is that it appeals to people who want to write bits of text for an encylopedia. but most of the people we have here on this forum are interested in skylines, not writing informatively about them. so, instead of people thinking really clearly and carefully about what they want to say before they post, they just write whatever is on their mind at the time (this is a discussion forum after all). they reveal their knowledge almost by accident as they need to - "yeah, i tried that brand of pod filter and got a drop in kw". if, on the other hand, we could "snare" text bits of relevant, informative posts and collate them together, say in a wiki, that would work. -

I agree with 25GTT. I know of other forums where you can't even post for two weeks after signing up. Delayed buying/selling won't completely fix the scammer problem, but it might alleviate it a little? -

i do a lot of work with knowledge management and useability, so here is 2c from my brain: 1. this forum is one of the best on the planet. good colours, decent layout. well done prank and all the others who put in their hard work to make it happen. thankyou so much. 2. i note that quite a few people are calling for 'improved searches'. this is fair enough, but the real problem is 'context'. the search function, as it stands, accepts just a few keywords and this is never enough to fully describe the problem. does 'turbo NA' refer to adding a turbo to a gts, buying a new turbo, fixing a broken turbo, insurance costs fo NAs and turbos? the average user expects the search engine to 'just understand'. it's important to note that this is the sort of thing huge firms like IBM have been dealing with for years without success. 3. can you get around this? yes, by constantly updating posts with some sort of 'value' measure (like 'guru points' mentioned above), and by refreshing old posts which are no longer relevant (pre 15-year announcement advice, for example). this puts extra load onto moderators and general users. 4. the suggestion of a google search is admirable but there are good points and bad points. good: takes processing load off sau, proven useability, familiar interface. bad: google only understands 'popularity', not 'context', so its famous clever search ability may be hampered, rebrands output as google traffic, redirects user attention away from sau. 5. right now the best antidote to being unable to find things is organisation. localising off topic posts into the postwhore threads is a good idea, but as others have mentioned, having the equivalent setup for 'useful' posts is also essential. examples include Danny's (DAN00H) posts about DIY compliancing. 6. there are some users you just can't help, and won't bother searching, learning, looking, finding. also, some users like projecting an inability to find things (apathy = cool). my suggestions -------------- - establish a library/repository of useful documents, maybe in pdf format. - establish sticky faqs for relevant boards (nb few people will read these in the short term). - reconcile which forums should be kept and which don't get enough traffic to warrant work - keep the wasteland/postwhore threads - then it's easy to see when a post is off topic, and redirect it. you need a rubbish bin or it piles up on your desk! - think about appointing 'knowledge moderators' to spy good question/answer combinations and collate them. - restrict the size of what can be used as an avatar/signature image prank, if i can help in any way, let me know. -
this is better than csi!

what purpose is there for denying a pm receipt though? expectations management. i may read a pm and then need some time to think about an answer. a nervous user may then expect a reply immediately upon receipt. also, i don't want the sender to read anything into the delay. i'm not dodgy, i just need time to think, or check things out. think about what happens when you call someone's mobile and it's switched to 'silent'. think about your immediate reaction - why is their phone off? why don't they want to talk to me? what are they doing? aren't i important? mandatory pm receipts are just not necessary - we've been living with snail mail without mandatory read receipts and email without the same for a long time. what about registered post? if that's what you want, use that instead. -
...the boat my car's coming in on: Yep, it's a slow day.

I have to ask why are you driving it around for a month without rego anyway? but he didn't say it was going to be a month it's presumably from the time the workshop finishes with it, to get it home, then over to the registration place. to the OP, don't think you'll have much luck mate - CTP is as close as you'll come, with a temporary unregistered vehicle permit.
