  1. yeah he almost got pinned by an 80kg squat but to his credit he went super deep on every rep... its tough to get your head around that... most people start chopping them off high when it gets heavy... he's 34 and 70kg so doing okay
  2. why are spotters always trying to jump in... my mate grabbed the bar on a bench press as it slowed quite a lot about halfway up... I was like duuude, unless the bar starts heading back down or I ask for it, don't touch the fckn bar! I'm not defending the guy (he obviously had no idea) but it's a bit hard to spot a girl squatting and not touch her a bit intimately... the best way to help someone up from a squat is to have your arms underneath their armpits and gently lift their chest up... most people fail a squat as they get bent over at the bottom, lifting their chest usually helps them just enough to finish the rep... you can't do shit grabbing their waist it's also okay to have a few seconds rest between squat reps... take a few breaths and refocus etc
  3. I like 'STFU and squat' what about shhhhh... ...squatting in progress I went to the gym with a mate yesterday... his gym, some commercial one he admitted to me he hadn't squatted in a few weeks... so we squatted... he then admitted it had been more like a month or two... had been doing leg press/leg curls instead apparently he can't walk properly today hehehe his bench 1RM ended up the same as his squat 1RM... he has some work to do... has very good technique though, nice and deep on the squats and benched to his chest... only started training earlier this year... already has significant physique changes
  4. I see where your coming from Mitch and the golf analogy is a good one... and yes at a beginner level you just need to go out and hit a lot of balls (like my mate needs more mat time)... do I think gaining some strength would help at this level? Yes! You see lots of people on the course who do not have the strength and coordination to swing a club correctly... strength has a big effect on coordination and balance... strength is not just brute power and speed... it allows you to hold your body in the correct position and apply force it always staggers me that people think (guys and girls) that if they start a strength program they are going to end up with less mobility and be 'muscle bound' etc... maybe if you train like a bodybuilder... but have a look at olympic gymnasts... the guys have massive muscle development... big upper bodies, lots of mass in the arms... yet they move easily, have great flexibility and endurance increased strength helps with coordination, balance, speed and endurance
  5. I'm not going to argue with you... if my mate did some additional strength work his Jitz would improve, you can disagree if you like but that's my opinion Surely you saw UFC on Fox on the weekend? (yeah I know we are now talking MMA which we agree on) Penn and Diaz both got thoroughly embarrassed by bigger/stronger/faster opponents, even though they have some of the best skills in MMA in any sport with weight divisions, body composition is very important... you maybe able to mask your deficiency with freakish talent/ability but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be even better had you put some effort into a strength and conditioning regime
  6. weight training stunting growth is a myth... just like all the other bullshit misinformation out there
  7. Markos has summed it up perfectly with his last two points so I'm done I'll leave you with this Vinny Magalhaes, BJJ World Champ... I'm sure he got like that from 'just rolling' ps. blue belt. http://graciejiujitsu.com.au/
  8. BJJ... yeah I understand it's mostly technique and smaller guys can have a lot of success over bigger guys (the beauty of it really) but if you think a strength program won't improve your Jitz your tripping* especially when competing with guys at the same weight and skill level like you do in BJJ competition... anything to give you that edge IMO *and Palhares will find you and rip your leg off lol
  9. yeah that poor guy get's a pretty hard time lol I can't even convince my mate who competes at BJJ to do some basic strength and conditioning... they do crunches and core stuff at training and he believes this is enough doesn't make sense to me as he has guys trying to break his arms and choke him unconscious... wouldn't you want every advantage possible?
  10. short sprints, broad jumps and (if you can get hold of one) medicine ball throws... I go into my driveway and shoot baskets, do jumps, sprints etc... just for 30min or so throw in some KB swings, plyo push ups etc... all the cardio you'll ever need;)
  11. you'd have to do cardio for the rest of your life to counteract some of the meals I eat...
  12. yeah I love a good coffee... long macchiato... strong enough to make your eyes bleed I know it's not easy... especially if you like your food... in fact it's the hardest part of the whole thing... I can happily get crushed under big weights and deal with the daily aches and pains... but not going out for a nice meal, eating a burger or having a beer with friends is a whole other challenge you've done well mate
  13. well that was a terribly uncomfortable gym session... I think I dropped about 10kg in water weight made worse by the guy showing the beginner (who was at least 20kg overweight) how to do 15 different types of curls and tricep extensions
  14. yeah your probably right but I keep trying I've just had good success implementing these ideas and want to share (naively... probably) I've also seen my old man take rank amateurs, with no previous athletic experience (20 years of sitting on their ass, in front of computers etc) and whip them into impressive shape using basic strength principles... mixed in with some resistance conditioning which I still think has a place, even with novices The same way I hate to see people wasting money on useless car mods I also hate to see people wasting time and money on fitness fads and I like this forum... but I get your point I enjoy reading the ProRaw forums... especially the training logs... lots of great info
  15. fair enough, if it ain't broke don't fix it! nah good your trying other ways and seeing if they work for you now can you please send me some of your discipline so I can eat the above diet... more than 4-5 days a week... damn weekends
  16. you don't get to call for shots unless you contribute...
  17. Looking good JEPPE! way to de-gay this thread a bit I think we need a 'glutes' shot... for science...
  18. I'm impressed you got this far... your pretty lean in that pic you posted which is a result of how strict you are with your diet... its fckn hard work dieting to get ripped and still functioning... going to work, seeing friends etc remember the more muscle you add the higher your metabolism will be and the more food you can eat... so clean bulk is the way to go I reckon... if you do it as clean as you have been you will hardly get fat anytime soon I find making improvements in the weight room much more rewarding than changes you see in the mirror (but that might just be me) Trying to get PRs while on a calorie deficit is exhausting... I've never felt better than the week before ProRaw when I took all the restrictions off my eating... lasagne for lunch, yes please! lol you'll be amazed how good you feel and how quickly your lifts go up... your very disciplined already and that's the best asset
  19. okay mate... thanks for your input... I understand you know all about this style of training (everyone who has posted here does)... however many people looking to get fit/in shape/lose weight do not... that is why I posted it here... it's for their benefit
