Cat back, highflow cat (better to get a decat pipe) but make sure it flows well, ie, its big. I have seen a couple of 3" 'highflow cats, that had the same size face as a stock one. Front pipe, definately worth while. It will give you more off boost and quicker spool up, less lag - its all good. The dump itself, also worth doing. Try and get a split wastegate type. Probably doesnt make alot of difference with being split vs integrated with the stock turbo, but if you ever want to upgrade, it will make alot of difference. With the above mods, you will probably find boost has also increased to around 7/9psi vs the stock 5/7psi. If you get a bleed or boost controller, dont take boost past 10-11psi without doing the intercooler first.

Exhaust back pressure - some things to consider
Steve replied to Steve's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Jeez Matt, thats crazy. I dont think mine was quite that bad, then again, it would be nice to pick up 60rwkw with an exhaust change! -
Sorry Roy, I dont know, but the only problem I see is that current flows from negative to positive. EDIT: I believe meggala had some resistors in anticipation of fitting different injectors, perhaps drop him a pm as he may have sussed it out already. EDIT 2: just had a bit more of a think, and it shouldnt make any difference as all you are doing is trying to change the impedance seen by the ECU. Sorry, once again this is all theory. My line of thinking is that as the current flow neg to pos, you need to have the resistors before the ecu, being before or after the injector will still result in the same resistance overall, before the ecu.

congrats! better fuel economy - whats that? I only just managed 300kms on 50L with power fc

You can buy a complete RB30DET (ie twin cam head) from RIPS for around $3500 delivered from NZ, or If you just want to bolt a turbo onto an RB30, I suggest you check the calaisturbo forums.

Exhaust back pressure - some things to consider
Steve replied to Steve's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks Paul, not quite out of the woods yet, but nearly there:) some people just have to learn the hard way - makes it more fun I spose, just gets a bit expensive. I think your small turbine housing is helping alot too, I may end up stepping down to 0.73 - have to see how it all goes - if I can get power to 8000rpm without dropping, I will stay with the housing I have. Currently (before this exhaust anyways) it starts dropping off at around 7200rpm. -
have you had a look in the phone book for major suppliers? I found the dealer (in Adelaide) that supplies BP (under the BP listing) and they said that although BP dont supply anymore, they could still source it, $55 for 20L May be worth a try

the stock nissan turbo is neither a T25 or a T3, its nissans own. You can get bolt on dump and front pipes from manufacturers such as HKS, that seperate the wastegate and turbine outlet pipes. fortuneately the nissan outlet is the same as a GT25 turbo, so no probs with compatability if you do go a GT2530 - which would be my first option before a high flow, unless of course you are doing your own? Something else that wouldnt hurt, a good pod, but make sure you have a partition and CAI. The partition and CAI are really easy and cheap mods and make a world of difference on and off boost when the days start warming up.

OK guys, crunch time:D I have pretty much finished mapping my submission, but it is time to put all the pieces together. Please, anybody who is willing to go on record, I need your support. what I will be doing is using examples - but these must be verifyable, so that when/if an investigation/shakedown is conducted, formal statements/testimonies will be available. Initially no names will be used at all, just case examples for confidentiallity, but for formal action to be taken it MAY be necessary for people to be contactable. So once again, please either pm me your story, with a statement that you are prepared to go on the record formally if required, or send me an e-mail. Dot point is fine, or any way at all. And remeber, even if you just feel the system is difficult to comply with, thats all you have to say, but if you have examples of incidents (such as yours Dean), even better. my e-mail is [email protected] Cheers guys

Are you sure? I rang the EPA in melbourne as part of my research. They told me the car can have exhaust, but must have cat, one only intake mod (pod or cooler, not both), BOV if it plumbs back, different turbo as long as it is similar to stock - the example I got is if the stock one has bush bearings, you could get a ball bearing, as long as its the same dimensions, but doesnt have to be OEM. When I rang, I asked to speak to someone about modified cars, and had to ring back as the guy I spoke to is apparently their authority on mods? Maybe they have changed the rules? His name was Lou, number (03) 9695 2676

Driver, have a look at the GCG website, they are probably the most expensive ones I know of:) Alternately, do a search for a thread by BOOSTD, who did his own high flow with very good results for a few hundred dollars.

Intercooler will help alot Upgrade your fuel pump think about clutch, stock one can die at as little as 200rwkw Full management would be a much better option than a fuel controller - controlling ignition is pretty important. Dump and front pipe, you need to get all the restrictions out of the exhaust side, and get rid of the cat too (as long as you wont get in trouble:)) Also, for the power figure you are looking at, it could be a bit risky to run the stock injectors. I know alot of people do still use them, albeit stretched by the fuel pressure reg, but you run a real risk of detonation, and a set of injectors costs alot less than a full rebuild. should get you there. Anybody else think of anything I missed?

Exhaust back pressure - some things to consider
Steve replied to Steve's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
2rismo, I have to change the spring, as its external gate. It has been as low as 10psi without spiking, so perhaps less than 10psi spring. I would have liked to do a before/after, but I would sooner spend the money it would cost on mods:) Plus, I had access to a couple of different cat back systems to try and see how things went. Dean, to reiterate, meow:p -
I would think a high flow would easily achieve the sort of figures you are chasing:) if it is done properly. I had an easy 200rwkw (around 350 odd bhp) with the stock turbo at 12.5lbs. what other mods do you have?

Hi all, this may be a bit of a such eggs to some of you, but nonetheless, I have been quite surprised by the effect of upgrading my exhaust. I fitted an Nismo exhaust, 80m with two straight through mufflers, to quieten my car down to legal, from the N1 that was fitted, 80mm, small final muffler, no middle resonator. At the time I was making around 200rwkw, and noticed an increase in lag and drop in power, but nothing overly dramatic. Later I fitted a HKS 303756T with a 0.61 turbine AR, and as expected, a huge increase in power, around 256rwkw at 1 bar with an interim tune, as I was doing cams and a couple of other things. Boost came on too hard at 3000rpm and even in 4th gear, with light throttle, the car would go sideways at 100kph, when boost hit. To combat this, and to reduce back pressure/free up top end, I went to a 0.87 turbine housing. HUGE lag, over 5000rpm until 1 bar was achieved. I was very disappointed, as other cars running similar combos were no where as laggy as this. The first thing I blamed was my custom manifold, as it was the only 'unknown' quantity on my car. I took the car to be dynoed, it now made 285rwkw at 1.2bar, and 270rwkw at 1.1 bar, but the lag was still up around 4800rpm for 1 bar. Better but by no means what it 'should' be. At 1.5 bar I only made 300rwkw, and at 1.7 bar 309rwkw and power dropped off between 7000 and 7500rpm. People I know who have run these turbos, told me that their experience was very different, with a massive increase in power for every 0.1 bar of boost being wound in above 1.2bar. In once case on an SR20, making 30rwkw more going from 1.3 to 1.4bar. I now suspected the car was being choked, so went off to get a new catback. I found a HKS Super Dragger 90mm, small centre resi, to 'try' and see if it resulted in much improvement. It was a dramatic improvement. things I found - boost comes in 700rpm earlier - off boost is alot crisper - off boost, it is now possible to drive at 50kmh in 4th gear, and the car can now be driven under 2700rpm all day - very smooth (and nice and quiet if plods are around) - economy has improved, from 190-250kms for 50L fuel I am now up to 170km and only just made 1/2 tank! - The car is so much snappier to drive, and really brings a grin to my face every time I get in the drivers seat. - It would appear that an exhaust system will flow reasonably until a flow is reached where back pressure starts killing power. - It also seems that the bigger the turbine housing, the more imperative that the exhaust be less restrictive. - my wastegate held 1.7 bar no probs with the nismo exhaust, now it wont allow more than 1.3-1.4bar. The (lack of) back pressure seems to be making the solenoid, and wastegate spring work harder (soft spring)???? but the car pulls alot harder at that boost pressure than 1.7bar before:) The car isnt getting a retune until I replace the intercooler to plenum pipe (2 1/2 inch, being upgraded to 3 inch) as I am sure this is something of a restriction too, and hope for a further improvement. Also, it seems I need to upgrade my wastegate spring to around a 1bar unit, or I wont be able to get much more boost. Bottom line, DONT underestimate the importance of a well built, free flowing exhaust especially when you start making a bit more power than stock:) Hope you find this interesting, as I cannot believe the massive difference just changing my cat back has made:D and remember, a noisy exhaust is your friend:p

At the engine or at the rear wheels?

Gizmo73, dont worry, its quite normal to be able to hear the BOV when you have a pod fitted. The air returns just after the AFM and before the turbo. If you want to quiet it down, fit a partition or box around your pod - which is a good idea anyway. Atmo BOV is not legal, unless you get an exemption for it - or plumb it back:p

Hi, would be alot easier if you say what you would like to achieve - then you will probably get alot of different options:)

Hi Craig, and welcome to SAU This topic has been covered in the past (a while back), try doing a search to see what you can find. In the mean while, whatsisname (SAU nick) is using microtech, and is very pleased with the job it does. You could try dropping him a pm. If you are chasing one for cheap, D1 Garage (www.d1garage.com) had a second hand one, may still have it, but it will be cheaper than retail. As for fitting and tuning, that will depend on who you see. I suggest you see a good reputeable workshop, as the tuning is something you definately dont want to scrimp on - it can make the difference between an excellent car to drive and a dog, or worse, destroying your engine. A good tune, expect to pay up to $600+. Suggest you post up on the Melbourne forum if you are looking for a good tuner over there. Good luck

Interesting that a car registered as a rally car doesnt need a cat and the exhaust can be 96db (told this by EPA), also, commercial vehicles can have turbo timers, some manufacturers fit them OEM! different rules for different people here. Cops defecting? Its all about numbers, to be able to justify money being spent (ie budget) the police must show that the money is necessary - if their were no defective cars in this state, no doubt money being spent keeping them on the street defecting cars would be spent on things like crime prevention. IMHO As for regency, god knows? perhaps just frustrated individuals that like a power trip and being able to say no to people and giving them the shits?????

HKS 3037S 56T turbo and wastegate
Steve replied to amosite's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
Killer turbo. What size is the turbine housing? Would you be interested in selling just the turbine housing (probably a very stupid question, but it never hurts to ask:)) -
I havent run the turbos, but I havent heard good things about them either from a lag point of view - I believe sydneykid has tried them, so it may be worth dropping him a pm. 280cams are pretty big, are you building a drag car?
