  1. Is V-Power "copper", will I still need to replace them regularly? Also, I'm NOT LOOKING FOR POWER GAINS FROM SPARK PLUGS, looking for longevity and reliability, I've never felt more power from a certain type of plug in 20 years of driving. Don't like the idea of 'stripping' the top of my motor out too much just 4 da plugs!! Thanx so much for your input mate.
  2. hey 2far.. you don't think the extra cash on plugs is worth the less messing around in the engine bay every few months, just to change darn plugs? Thanx man.
  3. Hey W747! mmmmmmmmm..My new plugs (2 weeks old @ $26.50 each) were installed at 1.1mm (pre-extra boost). Boost increased to 9-10 psi, now misfiring when gunning on take off (POP POP Blurble...POP!). So from all the info I see, I figured that .8mm was the fix. Now the 'type' of plug could be a cause??? mmmmmm...I need to get this right before the weekend, as I plan on doing the 'gaps' on my 33 (wot a stuff around with all those pipes ' sh1t). I'm hoping it's just the gap 747 (?) Thankyou so much!!
  4. Taken from another SKYLINE internet page............. New Plugs (30/12/00):Blah blah blah: On recommendation by another Skyline owner I installed some Nissan platinum plugs. I have for years been using NGK copper plugs simply because they are cheap and new copper plugs deliver stronger sparks than platinums. The down side is that copper plugs need to be changed every 5000kms to retain optimum performance, mine hadnt been changed for 10,000kms and were pretty fouled up. The Nissan platinum plugs are the same as Nissan Exa spark plugs (22401-58S16, NKG PRF6A-11), benefits are; more consistent plug performance over a longer period of time and less plug changes. As plug changes in the RB20 take about 40mins, this was a huge bonus. The serviceable life of the plugs is 100,000kms, but I think I will still change them after 20,000kms, depending on the condition. Downside is that they are $100 for a set, compared to $15 for the copper ones. Perfomance: Initially there was a huge difference in power, the engine was more tractable at low revs and came on boost earlier, however after the second day, it developed a miss above 5000rpm on high boost. This was familiar problem...... plug gaps were too big! The plug gaps on the Nissan plugs were 1.1mm which in my experience is too large when running high boost (+15psi), the theory is that the higher the pressures in the combustion chamber, the harder it is to light the charge, so you either need stronger coils or close the gaps on the plugs to about 0.9mm. Reducing the plug gaps on the Platinum plugs is a delicate operation, because the layer of platinum is very thin, you have to becareful not to damage this with the feeler gauge. All I did was place the electrode on to a rubber mat and tap the end gently with a rubber mallet untill the gap was sufficiently closed, do not close the gap too much as opening the gap is alot harder. After the gap was reduced to 0.9mm the miss was gone, but there was some loss of outright power, based on my gut feeling. Maybe the optimal gap is around 1mm, but this will depend on the health of your coils. Never the less the car does feel stronger with the new Nissan plugs, time will tell if they work better than the standard copper NGKs. Back to Skyline home page -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The last paragraph interests me the most........your thoughts on this simple but 'faskinating' subject!!!!!!!!!!?????????? Mark.
  5. thanx guys..........what an inovative lot we Skliner's are. Thankyou. Mark
  6. that's the thing CR33, the plugs are only 2 weeks old @ $26.50 each. Don't want to buy new ones ...ever again. (that's why I steered clear of Coppers, I just don't want to pull everything out again just to do plugs!!) I've heard that copper is slightly superior in output, but I won't notice. So there is no physical diff b/w plugs? that's all I was after..... you rock! thanx bro! Mark
  7. Simple Q? Can u easily re-gap OEM Nissan Platinum Plugs,...as you can with copper?..Not talking Irridium now, Just Platinum (if there is a diff?) Gone to 9psi. still at 1.2mm, my fault, I know now!!!(0.8mm!!) Practical responses by members much appreciated!!
  8. Hey Duncan, no way in the world would I like to take off all those hoses and cross-bar, and induction stuff etc...just to replace the plugs every few months.........NO WAY!!! I'll stick with the long life plugs so I don't have to go thru all that messing around again!!! But maybe you have more time and a nice garage, so this is easy for you? Anyways...Midas in Clayton did my front bearings (parts supplied) for $55.00 each wheel..........ace. I reckon the guy regrets quoting only this much in the first place though!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  9. thankyou to all those above for your input. Looks like Croat and RB25 are on the money, Thanx for all the subsequant back up from other members. One last Q on this one.....Do the standard Nissan Platinum plugs have one only electrode, so are they easy to gap to .8mm. Anything to keep in mind? Ta again.
  10. I've rung my mechanic who did my plugs, he used Nissan Platinum plugs gapped at standard 1.1mm, I suppose, to be fair, I should take the plugs out and gap to .8mm (as he does on boosted cars). He did the plugs before I did the boost thing...so I shall do that (?) So, even with a light boost, re-gapping is very important??? Thanx everyone, this truely is a grand site!! Love an ansa to dis!!
  11. ok.........so I take it that I'm not actually destroying my car by driving it at a displayed 9psi, and I hear popping from the exhaust? (occasionally when gunning it?) this is my MAIN CONCERN. What's the principle (your theory) of reducing the spark gap?
  12. Thankyou very much, but sorry RB25, I just can't go with that. They're new and have been installed by 'the experts'.. (as per my thread). I will come back to that if all else fails, or more ppl's back you up with the same. Thanx RB25, Mark
  13. Hi Croat, car was tuned by Genesis last week, with new plugs $26.50 each and AFM cleaned out aswell. Car was running perfect, so from what ur saying, extra boost changes the 'tune' or finds dodgey parts in your car. If I pulled the boost contoller out , will this miss-firing be gone? Also Croat, you seem pretty certain on Missfiring, true, it does feel a lot like when I hit the rev limiter at 7000, but are you sure it may not be the sound of 'over-boosting'. This would really scare me!! Does an 'over boost' sound, sound like a 'rev-limiter' sound? Or when you over-boost is the only way to tell ........ is when your motor instantly blows up? Just would love to know what noises are made when certain things are happening or about to happen. ...Croat......anyone.. I will check that 'content' as you suggested. thanx.
  14. Hey J B, well said, and well researched. Judging by the threads you've generated, still a hot topic! I've actually changed from Opti (mistic) max to BP Ultimate, because of you!! Seems ok, car runs well, but $50.00 dollars only just got me 300Kms!! Next I'll try the Mobil stuff, see how we go!! Cheers mate, Mark
  15. Hi all, this has prolly been discussed a squillion times, but............... what is the 'definitive' stock standard boost on a R33 series 1 (late 95 model) GTS-t. This weekend I installed a Speco Boost guage and GFB Boost Ctrl. Easiest fitment I have ever done in a car, ever. I installed Speco first so I could find the current PSI, (regardless if reading was right or wrong, it would show me the exact difference between new boost and original setting). It showed 6psi, then after install went to 10 psi (1.75 turns). Boost now comes in alot sooner (which I like) and comes on less 'linearly' (I also like). Only issue was that the car 'popped' 2 or 3 times from the exhaust at around 3500 to 4000 rpm then is OK. This only seemed to happen when I really 'gave it to her', otherwise, all is teriffic. I wound down the controller by .25 of a turn, now indicating 9 psi, but 'popping' is very rare. (but still there if you really kick it). Am I running too much boost? (Even if my Speco is wrong, I estimate a 3PSI boost regardless of actuall, by way of comparison). I honestly thought that these things can handle 12psi, relatively well (?) Is there any subsequent mods I should also perform after boost increase (although very small) to the car. I do love what the GFB control has done, it feels faster, without going to far over the top. I am an 60 to 80 kmh driver, but like getting there quick. Thanks, and please, I would like 'experienced comments on this one. (hate to sound like this, but hey, we're talking 'boost' here!!! Mark
  16. Hey J! ofcourse I don't mind!! $67.50 each side incl GST...I didn't bother with new protective caps ($22.00 each). Man! they weigh 900 grams each!!!
  17. Hey Johnny Be Good! "On the road......" what are some of your conclusions? Mark!
  18. Hi all, good to be back ondasite...still ace! Tonite I went tp Gary Rogers Nissan in Glen Waverley to pick up my new front wheel bearings....I was told on Saturday by Genesis Tuning in Blackburn that they were noisy..(geesh! I tawt dey were my tyres!), anyways, have you guys (SOME OF U guys have!).... seen the size of these farking things....they are probably compatble with those found on a small passenger aircraft. They r not 'coned' at all and only one bearing is used per wheel. I'm amazed cause I've replaced a couple of sets on Ossie cars (2 pieces per wheel, being an inner and outer cone)...but these ones, what can I say...FAAAARK! Anyways....has anybody done these at home with their own tools. Will i need a 'puller', or will me and dad just be able to slide the things out? Hey thanx.....just thought the info might be useful, (when a set gets tossed at you by Mr.Rogers from the computer desk...no, they're not for a Lockheed Jetstar.) Any help always much appreciated. Mark. ps. $26.50 FOR one spark plug for these machines!!!???? FAAAAARK
