i have constant access to avgas due to being involved in racing boats. wondering if anyone knows if i can use 5lts or so in every tank as an octane booster? car is a 33 with minor mods, cat back 3.5, hks pod, blitz bov and running 10psi

also.... would i do any damage to my car running it on straight av for events like nats and track days? heard it can burn out cats or o2 sencors or sumthin!

cheers!

Brett

avgas is a lead based fuel isnt it?? hence would not work...:S

lead based doesnt matter as far as i understand. It's just illegal

AV Gas i dont think would yield any benefit. Unless the car is tuned for it, you really arent gonna see a lot of improvement.

No sure about burning the O2 sensor, someone will know for sure :D

o2 sensor will die a orrible death,

avgas is no longer lead base...... its lead free..... the octane level has dropped quite alot since the removal of lead .. i think its down to like 104 or something.... where it used to be aaround 115 in the early 80s and 90s.

ur really not going to see much of a gain ....even by tuning it ... ur not going to run avgas everyday.... and for 180cents a litre u might as well run methonal and water injection.

OK, AVGAS is a DRY fuel, thus you should never go past a 10% mix as this will cause problems with fuel lines, fuel pump, injectors and so forth. Too much CAN actually cause more damage than the "perceived" benefit.

Also as it is a "dry" fuel it does not actually "mix" with the other fuel in the tank (similar to oil in water), however, that being said as both are fuels in the broader sense they do interact.

There is a slight performance gain, similar to that of using toulene or ethanol, it reduces the chances of knock and detonation and allows greater timing advance.

I have used this in many cars, purely at the track and NOT for everyday driving as the constant use is not good for the fuel system as mentioned previously.

Finally, with regard to the O2 sensor, too much avgas will not only see the death of this but also your cat. However, these effects are SIGNIFICANTLY reduced since avgas is no longer lead based. Thus a 5-10% mix, not on a constant basis should not have an effect.

I usually run 5% and have never had an O2 sensor fail, nor any other fuel system problems, I have seen 50/50 mixes do some nasty things to fuel pumps though...

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
