i like 1680x1050 too.

Once u have it for a while, going back to std 17" looks weird

Watch out fer the xfx 7900gt though, as i had to rma mine back to the shop as it started to artifact about a week after i bought it. They replaced it with another though, and its beewn fine ever since. I havent hit a game yet i cant run on full res :O

Please guide me - Im in need of a new antivirus program, one with the lot (anti spam, firewall, etc).

Whats recommended for a small business? Used to use Vet, then Norton, now McAphee............ but need to update again next month.

For a small business, I would definately look at something like Symantec Client Security... it comes with Symantec Antivirus (SAV) Corporate and the SAV firewall. It's very lightweight compared to the norton equivalent for workstations. And you can run it through a managed server if desired.

The number of friends who's had WD's die on them is astounding. Especially those WD JB drives, the first drives to be 200GB at an affordable price...

WD's have a pretty good reputation, there was a bad batch of 80gb and 120gb hardies - where we were getting about 30% defect rate on them, but they were fixed up pretty promptly. Haven't had a problem ever since. And i'm running a total of 8 WD's in my various workstations... 2x250gb, 1x74gb raptor, the rest are assortments of 120gbs and 80gbs.

so, is it safe to use the PC day in day out, running 3.5 in liue of 3.4ghz for the CPU, with the FSB at 205 rather then 200. I dunno........ its an expensive machine I built up, using sata raid with 2 x 200gig HDs and 1 backup standard sata 80gig HD. Good machine, dont want to ruin it prematurely, but would like max performance.

Currently my overclocked A64 3500 w/ X800pro powering a 24" widescreen lcd is on 24x7 as I use it to Fold for Overclockers Australia folding team. CPU usage on it is always sitting on 100% because i donate the spare cpu cycles to Folding@home. The uptime on it currently is roughly 6 months straight... i basically never turn off the computer unless I have to. If it means, my computer will die prematurely in 8years time instead of 10 years time then so be it, it'll be a dinosaur by that time anyhow.

But the computers at work run 24x7 and never ever go down... the longest uptime i have is on our webserver (http://www.dmac.adelaide.edu.au ) which has an uptime of about 400 plus days. That stays up even when there is no power to the building, and even when one of our hard drives or power supplies blow in the computer. Computers have become so robust in the past decade or so, that reliability is no longer a factor.

Edit, having said that, the weakest links are always things like cooling systems (refridgerated/watercooling/fan systems) they're usually first to give way. But modern motherboards will often just shutdown before excessive heat is introduced preventing a meltdown.

AVG antivirus free edition can be downloaded, and updates everytime u connect to the net (small file) ive never got a virus using it.

firewall - use sygate...free

spyware - use adaware personal (another free prog) which can be updated for free as well.

All 3 used together are the best

Replaced the capacitors on the linux box motherboard.

2nd one in I got the hang of it and now can do capacitor in roughly 5mins. :(

The trick I found is to use a really pointy ground down soldering tip, flux pen and desolder wick.

Remove capacitor, shove desolder wick over the holes, shove soldering iron in to hole and hold, the solder sucks up in to the desolder wick and the hole is clean, plaster flux over the legs of the new capacitor and motherboard. Little dab of solder on to the tip of the soldering iron and due to the flux on the legs and motherboard the solder literally just sucks its self on nice and cleanly. :)

I've done one board in the past that took a whole day to replace 10capacitors, difference was I didn't use the desolder wick. That gear saves so much time.

I'm using Kaspersky - the silver medal winner.

Incidentally I had bitdefender before that (which won gold) and I reckon it's way better - it picked up heaps BD missed.

No problems here, and it actually brought me back after my MAJOR infection (before I had any AV) without having to reformat and reinstall.

I also use Webroot Spysweeper for my spyware protection, and it's very good.

These were recommended by guys in IT security, and so far I've been happy with their recommendations.

I've used Kapersky but found it a little bloated for the amount of ram in my system. 512mb + the license ran out, that was the real reason for me stop using it. :)

I did find it to be excellent and definitely give it a thumbs up. I haven't used bitdefender so wouldn't know.

I haven't upgraded in years, its about time I didn. :(

Yes it's a bit resource hungry, but if I am doing something that I need all the power I can get, I'll turn it off and restart it again afterwards.

I also leave my pc on 24/7 most of the time, and have a scheduled scan at 3am every "night".

New upgrades for me :D

XFX 7900GT

Viewsonic VX2025WM

I like 1680x1050 lots.

nice upgrade u guys seen those cheini monitors great value and thumbs up from PC authority

i have a guy in my clan that has been thought 4or 5 7900gt's i think there was a batch of faulty ram modules samsung has since fixed there ram

i use Avast personal edition and use to use adaware but dont visit unsavoury sites so i dont use it much any more

    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
    • Pull codes via the self-diagnosis procedure. As far as I can tell this is just a sign of transmission issues but not a code unto itself.
