Tangles
Ok, need some help / advice from the resident techies, please I have the following system: Intel 650 Pentium-4 3.40ghz (upgrading to new Intel 670 3.8ghz) Asus P5N32SLI Deluxe Motherboard (brand new) 3 x 1gig sticks of Elixier 533mhz ddr2 Ram (2 of these new) MSI 7800GTX 256mb graphics card MSI 7800GTX 256mb graphics card (both in 16x sli mode) 2 x 200gig sata HD 7200rpm (both in RAID0 setup) Silicon Image Sata Raid Controller pci card 1 x 80gig sata HD 7200rpm 1 x new floppy drive 1 x LG dvd burner drive Thermaltake Soprano case, extra fans Thermaltake Golden Orb cpu fan Super Flower 650W power supply with braided lines (brand new) SoundBlaster Xfi Music card Zalman 5.1 6channel surround sound headphones Soloman 5.1 6channel surround sound speaker system with subwoofer CMV 19inch monitor Logitech G15 keyboard Logitceh G5 mouse Windows XP Pro Built it up slowly, like a car I suppose, over the past cple of years. OK, here is the deal. I got the 2nd MSI 7800GTX 256mb video card off ebay recently, tested it, works as good as my original which is in great condition. Set it all up, bam, fried my original 430w power, so I got the 650w sli power supply. Been running sli mode with every game of Battlefield 2, but the PC sometimes crashes to desktop, or it freezes totally requiring a restart, or it'll suddenly lag up (once naded or artied) and the ground will turn to snow, the plants will turn polar white, and I'll move at 1 frame per second. Ive tried numerous nvidia drivers, some modified and tweaked, some real old, some new, all the same IMO. SLi is giving me extraordinary feautures with architecture etc, even when everything in the Control Panel is turned off (bar sli x16 mode) and bf2 settings all on low to medium. When the control panel settings are on full blast, the 2 cards offer huge performance....... awesome. But either or, it'll randomly freeze or lag up or shut down the pc, no matter what the settings or the rendering mode Im using. very random, can happen twice in a night, or not at all for 2 weeks. Im lost. Tried all I can. Is it perhaps the power supply? I think its a 600w base supply to a max of 650w on overrun, so to speak. Could it be a heat issue? These cards pump out a huge amount of heat - perhaps install a fan that draws in outside air to blow all over the 2 cards? Any suggestions? Ive got the Soprano case so there are fans-a-plenty already installed. Im thinking of selling them both (450 delivered, currently sinffing out on ebay whether someone wants them) and getting a 2900XT instead. But Id rather not, these 2 beauties when stable are unreal. Any suggestions? Oh, Ive bought a new Intel 670 3.8ghz chip and sold my Intel 650 3.4 chip, awaiting delivery. Can also sell the 3 gig 533mhz ram for 2gig 667 ram I suppose. Help !!! Im sick of the random freezing. Its not often, but enough to be totally unpredictable. What could be causing this? My first venture with SLI and I love the graphical nature of the 2 cards. Even when not on full steam. aarrrggghhhhhh Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/71/#findComment-3253236 Share on other sites
Pauly33GTS-t
tangles. are you seeing artifacts and texture corruption on the screen. Both are a sideaffect of overclocking but more often than not HEAT. The soprano case while it does have a few fans and looks nice, it does not cool down your pc too well, I had the Tsunami case which is like the soprano but all aluminum, and I thought that the side casefan was positioned VERY POORLY for my 7950GX2 1gb card which is 2 7900's sandwhiched together on a single PCI slot. I had some similar issues with that case, if i played for more than an hour i would experience random crashed, BSODs, and random resets. very annoying. I took the side fan off and pointed a fan on a stand into it and it was more stable but still it wasnt quite a long-term soution.. In the end, I bought one of these and it fixed all my issues.: And its the most free flowing and best case I have ever purchased. I think its rated as the case that pretty much is the pinnacle of air cooling atm, no other pushed as much air as this. its ~200dollars tho. so there might be other things you can try to see what the problem may be first. Tangles
cheers for the thoughts nah no artifacts or evidence of the 2nd card being previously overclocked and damaged. I know my original card is as good as new. definately no architecture corruptions. beautiful crisp and precise video output, the game is a pleasure to play (all I do on the pc is listen to music, search, and play BF2 in clan wars and pub servers) hhmmm, might drill out a hole in the clear case under the current central fan (pushing air out), to push air in towards the 2 cards which sit right down low. I have a 90mm fan but only a 60mm drill hole bit, lol. was worried about the new power supply, I dont want to change that as I think it should suffice. same thoughts with the current ram sticks. Cubes
As Paully said it does sound like a heat issue. BUT... Just to rule it out. Overnight; run memtest looping test 5 and then the following night loop test 8. That will rule out any issues with the ram. Pauly33GTS-t
make sure ur ram is matched. that can also cause numerous problems. (ie same voltage, latencies, settings, even if u have to over clock them make sure they are all stable). Also, in the 6800 days I had issues with my 3d card so I updated its firmware and solved some issues, although this is risky I'd look into that also. Tangles
she does get damned hot, thats for sure. heats up the room nicely in winter !!! Tangles
maybe using 3gig ram is silly. will take out the older ram module...... Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/71/#findComment-3253405 Share on other sites
Fishpaste~
how new is the ram?? i'd say that is your problem, and if you read the motherboard manual, it'll probably say you can only run 1, 2 or 4 sticks of ram! with all current CPUs/computers you wuold be CRAZY to run 3 sticks, you want dual channel ram in all of your systems regardless - and to anyone else running 3 sticks (or 1) in a dual ram setup, stop doing it your almost halfing your systems performance!!! also, some games just dont like SLI, and will give you errors when they run in sli (i know wow had massive problems with it) you may have fried the grapics cards when the power supply blew up, or the 650 may not have enough grunt to actually run the cards and hence the graphical errors hope this helps Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/71/#findComment-3253463 Share on other sites
Tangles
cheers, yeah was running 4 x 1gig sticks, 2 sets of matched ram. found tho that the 4th stick sat against power supply lines, wasnt happy with that so I took it out. That one is being sold with my old mobo on ebay for $100 (current bid), just put up the other 3rd stick on ebay for $35. These 2 sticks were approx 2yrs old. Will keep current 3month old 2 x 1gig matched ram @ 533mhz sticks. But will also do Cubes mentioned memtests on them. Im thinking the power supply is 650w rated up to 700w, actually. yes might be the issue, but wont bloody replace that, rather sell both cards and 'upgrade' again for minimal cost to a 2900xt ($500). Heat. too hot in the box, for sure...... gggrr so hard to work out what could be the definate answer. I dont believe either cards were fried when the power fried itself. They work fine as stand-alone. cheers for the advice.... at me wits end. done so many driver updates, tried heaps of different graphical settings. but yeah, tonight, drill new fan hole and install extra fan, take out extra ram stick, do tests. Pauly33GTS-t
And if that doesnt work, buy another fridge aka Antec 900 and you will never worry about heat, only dust. Fishpaste~
any psu up to the 800w tagan is still cool and quiet, over the 800w tagan and your starting to increase the noise/heat of the system i'd put my money on ram being the problem, either not liking the 3 sticks, or incorrect bios setup for the ram you are running (note: somtimes running spd settings is a lot worse than setting them up at correct timings) if the cards are running fine individually, then the only thing will be the ram causing the problem (and a small chance its the motherboard) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/108819-computer-jargon/page/71/#findComment-3253733 Share on other sites
Pauly33GTS-t
It should be all good tho with the mobo cause its asus, but maybe the psu u had before might have damaged it by fair chance.
