james, i did this with my car.

what i did was go to bbc and get 2 light l brackets, theyre like 35 cents each.

screw one side of the bracket into the top of the vent where you cant see it so the other side hangs down. then screw the plate in.

70 cents and works just as well as anything from japan :)

i'll try and get you some pics

Sweet, I look forward to seing pics of the different brackets that you guys are using ... the $0.70 job sounds like the plan, got a bunnings just down from my place on Parra Road. Just gotta figure out where to secure the brackets.

Tony, as far as defects go, I was under the impression that when it came to mounting, the plate must be visable front the front of the vehicle and could not be obstructed by glass (so not behind the windscreen) but it didn't have to be in the perfect center, just visable from the front of the vehicle.

Were you advised of any particular reason as to why having your number plate mounted on the side is deemed a defect ?

Does anyone have the ADR in regards to this ?

Oh this cop was a kuntbag.

He says that only cars that came out of the factory with the offset plate is non defectable like the Alfa 156.

Mine just had thin bent metal straps that bolted to the bottom of the bar opening.

I use white slimlines now so it doesn't impact on my FMIC.

T.

Went through booze bus on Thursday - cop actually said it looked good (he had a GTS-T). Victoria may not be as strict?

James: Will take detailed photo in the am and will find shipping cost of Cusco mount from JapanParts.

Here is front shot of car.

You can see the aluminium bracket above the 'GT' part of the plate. It secures to a bolt (just 1) in that position. I backed it with gaff tape so the numberplate screws don't scratch the paint :D

Is very light aluminium and came with a cool Cusco sticker :)

Very cool little part... but the DIY approach will achieve the same result and be much cheaper.

Dude... i thought i PMed u instructions alreaDy! hhahaha

one word.............

'L' SHAPED BRACKETS !!!

L shaped brackets (1.5mm stainless steel) are available to help make a corner

joint with your front bar AND using a phillips screwdriver with (2) screws, attach the number plates together facing upright. If u are creative, u might use a washer behind the screws. ;)

i don't see why it would be illegal to have ur number plates on one particular side of the car provided that it is still visible. Most Audi and other euro cars have front no. plates on side as factory position.

Thanks Miz, got some L shape brackets tonight from Bunnings ... inflation is a bitch $1.20 each !!! :D

Here's the info I have received on offset mounting for anyone interested.

It isn't an ADR restriction. There are angles of visibility requirements (cop writing parking ticket needs to be able to read the front plate, cameras need to read rear plate) and the rear one has to be lit (with complying lights) but they are allowed to be centred, left or right so long as they are properly upright (fairly close to vertical) and visible at the appropriate angles. As long as it's not recessed, it should be fine.

Oh, and in response to things such as the Alfa's with offset mounts, they have a specific ADR apparantly to do so, which is why I wanted to investigate this further. Apparantly the plate must be level and not follow the contour of the bar, however I believe in the case of the 156 it actually follows the bar which is why it required the ADR.

I looked on the vicroads site and found nothing, but i seem to recall that offset plates were illegal in Victoria.

They changed the law recently so you can actually get fined $220 and 3 points for having a dirty or obscured number plate here in VIC. Whether that would fall within their definitions I'm not sure. Its all due to revenue raising and city link cameras being designed dumb so they change the laws to suit.

as far as i know it's not illegal in vic to side mount you number plate.

As long as it's on the LEFT had side (if looking at the front of the car) so it can be seen by on coming traffic etc. it's fine.

Right had side is illegal though in VIC so ya can't do that.

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
