Hi,

Ok this is really frustrating me..

Only started happening about 2 - 3 days ago. When i turn on my headlights, my front left light seems to turn on at random times. For example if i turn on my headlights fully, my parkers will turn on, then only the right headlight turns on. I'll turn them off, then turn them back on, then both headlights will come on..

Turn em off and back on again, and then only right side..

Its like the headlight just turns on whenever it feels like it.

Sometimes my front right doesnt turn off and my front left does.

Any ideas? Could it be my battery or something?

I've done heaps of fiddling with all the connections and still havent found anything..

Sounds like the actual dash switch needs to be pulled apart and the contacts cleaned, very common problem in the R32s. The contacts gradually wear and the contact resistance increases to the point where the lights will work intermittantly. Clean the contacts carefully and you should get some renewed life out of the switch.

Cheers

oh ok

well i'm a bit of a noob, how do i go about doing that?

Cheers.

You will have to undo the instrument surround with the light switch and pulling it forward or out completely (easiest solution) you can then access the 3 screws that hold the switch in place. Once you remove the switch carefully open it with a screwdriver. There are 3 thin and long contacts (from memory) which pivot like at seesaw and make contact with some copper pads. You will need to remove the long contacts and with a nail file or similar carefully clean any carbon deposit on the contacts and copper pads. Reassembly and test before putting the switch back in place.

The headlight main feed passes through the switch so any reasonable resistance across the contacts will result in intermittent operation of the headlights.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

SLO32 is right. i have exact same problem on my 32. havent fixed it yet(gotta get my car runnin first :P ), but checked it. the white plug looks as if its been fried a little on mine. hopefully yours aint that bad. The surround aint hard to take off. there are two screws under the cluster surround to unscrew. then there are four on these plastic panels kinda where your knees sit. Pull this panel down a bit and then i think there are two more screws. im pretty sure all 32's have same dash layout. where your light switch is you should then be able to have a look at the plug and clean it

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
