fitting an air filter

Recommended Posts

Mine needed an adaptor plate, i got that from autobarn.

i believe the apexi filter comes with the adapter to suit.

unless 33's are different to mine u will need an adaptor of some sort or you could run some screws through - i wouldnt, but some ppl have. Depends on filter setup though, you may not be able to screw into anything secure enough...

I got an O2 Rush and it bolted straight on to the AFM. Couldn't be easier. Just make sure the pod kit you get is to suit an R33. No mods required. Just be prepared for the sound! I thought I must have forgotten to re-attach a pipe or something when I took it for a test run. Love it now though!

pod filter + exhaust, i'd say yes the sound will make heads turn...I am going to make up a cai box for better cooling of intake air and to quieten the thing down a bit...you can clearly hear it with the windows up and stereo on too!

[it sounds like a have an aftermarket BOV, but i dont and personally wouldn't waste my money]

Dude, if you bought a *kit* that means you would have got an adapter [correct me if im wrong] with it to suit your car [r33] ~ I haven't modified anything on my car to fit a pod either. Your wording is likely to confuse someone that hasn't fitted a pod filter before!

Unless you can buy a pod with the screw holes already there? anyone care to enlighten me on this? Maybe 33's are different? I doubt it though...even commondoors need an adapter why would 33's be any different...

Yeah, I have a UAS cold air box, Pod filter + exhaust and aftermarket BOV which was on the car when I got it. I got my girlfriend to drive the car up the road away from me then towards me and you can hear the turbo spool up over the exhaust. As nismoR34 said it definately turns heads when the turbo spools up. Don't know whether the box quietens it though? I like the sound, others hate it. Its is all personal preference.

It still seems quiet to me. My previous car, a 72 GT Clubman mini, had twin SU's hard against the firewall, now thats loud!

I do like the sound too but when you are turning heads ~ sometimes those heads belong to Police/EPA/etc, and can be asking for trouble...which begs the question, are any of these things legal?

PODs: according to EPA you can have 1 intake mod, a pod thats NOT foam is okay but not the oil based from what I have heard. But what about police / vic roads do they care about pods? or the noise? *shrugs*

BOV: I am not 100% sure but I know people that have been told off for using them, and have heard that they are illegal if vented to atmosphere.

BC: An intake mod, so when used in addition to a pod [or after/m intercooler] it is not legal [only 1 mod allowed].

I think we need a FAQ section for these issues, written by people who have either obtained info from the relevant authorities or are the authorities themselves.

The O2 Rush is all one piece! There is no adapter piece. Just pull it out of the plastic, grab the nut and bolts from the AFM which bolt it to the original air box and bolt on the pod. Job finished!

yeah ok then - the adapter is built into the pod ~ same as unifilter I believe...but they don't cost $30 like my pod either ;)

I personally can't justify spending 200-300 dollars on a pod that doesnt do that much to increase performance [compared to the cheaper ones]..call me a :shake: I dont care!

Guest silver33 guy

i read at the blitz UK website that expensive and cheap pod filters are different in the sense of the amount of air they let through.

then, i read at another thread in this forum that the pods that let a lot of air through dont filter the air much and that causes a lot more deposits in the AFM.

is this a compromise that we have to live with?

ps. the blitz filter was made from a metal mesh and like a few others, claims that its the best. but if you tell me that a $30 filter will do the same, hey, i'm not gonna spend $300 on a blitz!

I have read all of those tests on filters and personally dont see the point in spending $300. Sure they may look good or flow a bit better or even sound a certain way but I am happy [as are other friends] with my $30>40 Simota etc filter.

Stock turbo and engine only need a certain amount of flow anyway [there is such a thing as too much I believe], a pod provides a better flow than a panel - this has been proven. A lot of the expensive pods seem to fall into the *oil* category too which makes them non-epa compliant [illegal]. So no foam and no oil to be safe and legal...

If you are like me you won't let your filter [pod or otherwise] get dirty anyway ~ if it does and you cant clean it, buy another one! At $30 odd dollars a pop you'd be lucky to spend anywhere near the cost of the others, maybe in 10 years or so...

I have found this book very useful *21st Century Performance* by Julian Edgar. A lot of his articles from the book are found at www.autospeed.com.au plus other tests / reviews...buy the book or read through the website for info on air filters / turbos / boost / exhaust etc...

oh yeah, just be sure to read the packet the filter comes in > some of the really cheap ones [not simota] say *not suitable for use in turbo cars* I have come across this only once [a/barn], the filter will probably be fine but if it does stuff up - you can be sure there will be NO warranty coverage!

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
