First post ever!

I have been looking at buying a R33, The one I looked at was nice pretty stock which is how I wanted it, But I had to also convice my dad to let me get it. He loved the one we looked at but we had a RACQ check done on the car.

The RACQ wasn't to bad except it came back with alot of 'illegal' things such as BOV and air filter etc. One of the ones that he really didnt like was the fact that the 17' mags on it came back saying 'incorrect wheels for car - illegal size and incorrect and illegal spacers fitted'.

I was maily wondering how stuff like that affects insurance and with a stock 33 - say it has a body kit, legal hight, stock engine (turbo) and mags on it - what could the cops book you on?

Can you really get slammed by the cops if you have done no engine mods?

Also I spoke to RACQ and Nissan before I seriously look at the car and they both said ' i wouldnt even touch the car - stay well away from then', 'personally i wouldnt buy one - expensice to service etc' Wats your comments?

I just after a bit of info.

Thanks alot

Lol, for starters any modification you make to a car it draws attention to it from the Police.

If ur 17 and are buying a turbo car you in the same boat as me sort of. Im 19 this yr. Insurance is a bitch. Your looking at something around the $2500 mark easily.

Ummmm with the wheels im nt sure what the go is with them but yes spacers are illegal. Correct me if im wrong everyone else. But they are illegal as the wheel isnt bolted onto the hub its bolted onto the spacer which is bolted onto the hub. So the wheels not technically on the car.

Ummmmm Bov well you would have changed the stock one anyway and Pod isnt illegal unless its flapping around and not secured with a bracket.

Im not 100% on all this info but just what I have researched.

Goodluck mate

why did they say they wouldnt touch it? because it has wild, crazy illegal mods like a bov and pod? If for that reason then thats a rediculous claim......

here in Perth, spacers are illegal. wheel size can go 2" larger than in diameter from stock. not too sure about width. id imagine 17" wheels on a Skyline would be fine, unless it had some hugely wide wheels on it....

they are certainly not overly expensive to service, relatively easy to do yourself if u can. i guess the only thing with grey imports is panels etc if u have an accident. getting the right panel to fit can be a drama sometimes.

motors are strong and very reliable if looked after especially if your not planning to modify. you may need to spend a little more on some decent oil and of course 98RON fuel, but apart from that its a much better value car than a VS Commodore of the same era.....

Thanks alot, The insurance quote I got was for 1700 full comp, which i was thought was great.

and im only 18, 19 in aug,

I am keen to get one, now the one I have like just got sold, its hard to find a neat clean one around. I like the nizmo body kits, just somthing plain and stylish.

Thanks for your info,

Do all yous skylines have spaces on them for the mags?

if anyone else can add anything please feel free, it helps me alot.

one thing about insurance they will probably accept the car and you pay the money. but when you go to make a claim they may say "no your car has illegal mods and cannot be covered by us".

Spacers are not legal anywhere i think, i wouldnt really risk it personally. also if a cop want to defect you they can. i had one threaten me with a defect, i was being a smart arse so i kinda deserved it, and my car was a stock as a rock VS Commo...

atmosphere vent BOV are illegal, also, depending on where you are, and intercooler AND pod filter are illegal. although i havent heard of anyone getting done for it. theres a scan somewhere on the forums about it. it may be a state specific tho.

Oh before i forget. if you have the right wheels for the car you shouldnt need spacers. he may have just been unlucky when getting rims that they had the wrong offset or something and they were rubbing and so needing spacers...

Edited by Freddy Kruger

spacers required if wheels are an incorrect offset.

with illegal mods being on your car and weather insurance is valid or not is going to depend on the insurance company. some are far more leanient than others.....

I would never get RACQ to check over an import they hate them and will have a negative comment against them everytime. Get a mechanic that knows the car in question to check it out for you.

I had RACQ pull my old silvia to pieces and got it checked out by a mechanic (family friend) who may I add is RACQ approved and he said there was nothing wrong with it.

My 2cents

But you can't pay your premium by the month, its 1700 Straight up - but I havnt completly read the 32 page policy, but i have noticed it says any modifications done they will not cover you...not to sure what there limit is, becuase they actually ask you what you have on your car when you quote.

Hey mate. How much are you willing to spend? There are tons of R33's in and around Brisbane at the moment so you shouldn't have trouble finding one to buy. RACQ would shred the hell out of mine but that's what you get when you mod your car. At the end of the day, I have a damn reliable and well running car for a 1994. RACQ are throrough because they have to cover anything they miss. They are legally bound to. That's why they're so picky.

i just bought mine bout 3 months ago. i had it racv checked (vic) i thought it was a waste of money. they listed the most obvious things on it. like non standard gear knob, non standard wheels(18's) front and rear strut braces, exhaust. nothing in depth about the engine, transmission, turbo. they said on the phone they did a compression test but there was no results on the report. the only reason i didnt go to a mechanic is because it was the end of jan and he was on holidays. i just couldnt let the car go or it wouldnt be there when i came back. so i had to settle for racv check.

i went into great depth to uncover the pod filter legalities. i spoke to vic roads and the epa and a rwc place. the rwc place didnt know shit. they claimed any pod filter was illegal. this isnt the case, vic roads set the rwc standards and they have a manual that all registered rwc places have to be familiar with. they have to be a paper eliment they have to be secure and they have to retain the air flow meter. and if you have a pod you cant have a fmic or vice versa its only one intake mod aloud. (these are the rules and regs in vic)

    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
    • Thanks for that, hadn’t used my brain enough to think about that.
    • Also playing with fire if they start to flow more air down low than what the stock twins can. It's not even up top you need to worry, it can be at 3000rpm and part throttle and it's getting way more flow than it should.
    • Any G40/1000 or G40/1250 results out there?
    • You still want a proper tune on the stock ECU though. Stock tune + stock ECU with GT-SS/-9s is probably playing with fire if you're running more than stock airflow/power.
