I am just after people opinions on the Con Rod strength of the Vl Turbo i know the crank is strong but the rods i can't get a straight answer some say 500 some say 600 and i heard a place called JB Performance use them in their hipo 3 litre GTR engines, id appreciate anyones comments but preferably those who have played with them. I would also have them peened, close honed and side polished as well as balancing them.

I've been told that Nissan rods generally have a design limit of about 100HP (per rod). This came from an engineer who worked for Nissan when they manufactured cars here (80'/early 90's). However, the real weak point of a conrod is not the rod itself, but the rod bolts.

yeh the rod bolts on nissan rods are shit to say the least i know of a couple of 9 second vl's running shotpeened polished rods with arp bolts.

There is a company in adelaide they are called argo and make rods and there no where as near as expensive as carillo's jst a thought

Hi guys, GR8NES asks..............

"Does anyone know the ARP part number for the rod bolts to use ?"

That seems to be a closely guarded secret, ARP know but won't tell you because they sell them to a Japanese tuning shop (HKS, I believe) and most likely have a secrecy agreement. The local guys who know like to keep that sort of stuff to themselves (intellectual property), they can charge more that way.

What I do is measure them (head, rod & main) up, or send a sample and order them by the specifications, not the part number.

Hope that helps.

Hi GR8NES, last time I did the numbers, to close and hone, shot peen, polish, floating gudgeon bush and balance a set of rods plus the cost of a set of oversize rod bolts with rethreading, it was cheaper to buy a set of Argo I beam conrods. For not much more I could have a set of H beam Carillos.

Since then we have automatically gone straight to Carillos, I will check the costs again for our next RB31/RB26 but I would be surprised if things have changed much.

Hope that helps.

Hi guys, while I was searching for some other data I found an invoice for some Ford Cleveland ARP rod bolts, since I haven't done a Clevo for a while (about 10 years) I suspect they found their way into an RB engine. The were Pro Wave ARP 2000 in P/No 254-6403, which have a Carillo "C" type head style which is the same as Nissan use. Compare the specifications, they may be the ones you need.

Hope that helps.

    • thanks for the advice on the box... i was thinking the 6 speed was better for cruising on the highway but on closer inspection and comparison the Rb 5 speed box was not too different...  So the choice is going to be the RB25 box... if I can save up and find one at the right price
    • Thanks Matt, yes that's what i am aiming for. Just going to apply the right voltage and grounds to the dash connector. Hence my search for these pins... any chance you know if these pins are in the same spot as the ones on the S15 Dash connector? as mentioned above on page 8?
    • Yes, unfortunately that's the one. Signal was noisy to begin with; after driving once and looking back at the logs I saw pressure constantly swinging between 0-200psi, or staying at 0 randomly for a few seconds. There's a lot of good sensors that share the same look and feel, so don't presume they're all bad. I bought mine for 20$ off Amazon and I should have read the reviews prior, as it's clear they're junk.  I purchased a lowdollerr motorsports sensor.
