What sorta power should i be getting @ the wheels out of my RB20DET ECCS with the following mods :

* 3 inch dump pipe into a 3 inch hi-flow cat, 3.5 inch zorst from the cat back

* 10 psi of boost

* k & n pod type air filter

I got it dynoed and wasnt too impressed with the outcome, not that i was expecting big horsepower but this wasnt much of an improvement from the standard power output. I got 160hp @ the wheels.

You guys reckon this is a pretty accurate reading or is the something wrong with the car?

cheers

power? you should use 240V AC if your in Australia.

Seriously, don't worry about comparing dyno figures except with your own from the same day and dyno.

Is 160rwhp too low? Probably not. Why don't you see how fast you car is. If it's too slow for you modify it some more.

If beating other people in a dyno comparison is what you like to do then knock yourself out.

I had exactly the same mods and made 109kw at the wheels with 10psi.

I will not put my car on the dyno again unless I have added a substantial mod and want to see what I have gained or am getting something tuned at the time.

Trying to keep a handle on maintanence negates me modding extensively at present.

I feel slow sometimes and when that happens I go drive my g/f's mirage or someother sh*tbox and then get back in my car again. Trust me you will feel the difference!

edit-sorry, tell a lie I only had a catback on the dyno.

slo-32 - I got 114rwkw when i had mine done last Thursday. Had the same problem as you with timing i saw in an earlier post of yours, except my timing had been set wrong. Started at 70kw and i thought what the! after that they realised the timing had been set wrong and ended up getting 114 :( very happy with it.

Mods i have are pod and turbo back exhaust and running 14psi i think on the Apexi AVC-R i had installed on the same day. Nor unless they did the power run at 12psi, but dont think so. Cant wait to see what it'll do with a few more mods i wanna do like cooler and bigger turbo :D

BTW - what is conversion of hp to rwkw?

Mine was 143rwkw with Trust element in the stock airbox, HKS Super Drager cat back exhaust and Supra front mount cooler, stock boost.

With a pod filter, front pipe, custom FMIC it made 153rwkw at stock boost

Chris

itsallgood : 160rwhp = 119rwkw i think...well around that

... 153 rwkw?! You sure you dont mean hp? Surely a FMIC doesnt give you that much power does it? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Cheers

yes u r very wrong, fmic gives u about 30rwkw gain at same boost level over stock cooler.

Stock cooler is the biggest restriction in the whole system.

I remember alot of ppl saying a fmic doesn't really do shit with a 32? Either way i should have mine back (fkn taxi ran me off the road) in around another month. She comes back with a micks metalcraft 600x300x76 so ill be able to comment :P

With stockbox, 3" exhaust str8 thru, 10 psi, and timing on around 30 (no pingage pphhoaarrwww) we were on around 138rwkw.

What have other ppl noticed that have swapped to a fmic in a 32?

I've run 35degrees base timing on regular bp98. About 25-30degress at the moment.

fmic will always make a difference. The peak power will be higher for sure. The only problem is some 'oversized' fmic packages will lose response over the factory and make the car slower to accellerate over 400m.

I agree with you totally, though from everything ive read, suggests that without say a new turbo etc, changing the IC on a 32 doesn't make a great deal of difference.

Now ive seen 100 of ure posts saying "omg my fmic gave me 30wrkw" :D, im just wondering what i should be expecting...5? 10? 30?

Yes INASNT...I have never had a FMIC. In fact this is my first turbo car and still learning alot about them. And I am learning a great deal from you guys at this forum.

The only reason i questioned the power gain from a FMIC is becuase i've been in a s14 with a cooler and one without and the one without went alot harder / better. And they pretty much had the same mods. But i now know there is many factors that could have made this be.

Thanks again

sLo :D

I never dyno'd it with the stock cooler, but I reckon it was around 120rwkw. As I said before, with the 7MGTE Supra cooler it made 143rwkw, and with a proper custom job it made 153rwkw. All with no change to the stock boost.

Currently its making 198rwkw with a HKSGT2510 and a re-mapped computer and decent intercooler.

I'd recommend a bigger intercooler to any one with a stock cooler, the amount of extra grunt thats lost through the stock cooler is a joke, and retaining it is also a joke - bigger is better!

    • No chop chop of anything mate, it is what it is, plus, I don't want any air that isn't either going through the cooling stack or intake getting into the engine compartment increasing under bonnet pressure  Yeah, the Mazda Speed aftermarket intake above is less than ideal for multiple reasons, the requirement to remove the bumper every time you need to service the filter, and also smaller in diameter than the NC1 OEM one Weirdly, Mazda Speed is part of the Mazda motorsport division, "form over function" and $$$$$ for Mazda from unsuspecting punters I suspect  After some googling about them it seems they added no power, but do increase some induction noise Meh In other news, the electricians have been busy today at the house, and are back tomorrow finishing up all the security stuff and exterior lighting, they also added some lighting on the garage ceiling, which will come in handy when working in the garage when it's not freezing out there My Birdies raised garden bed also arrived today as well, which I'll put together and place tomorrow, it's a big tall Bessie, 74cm high, 92cm wide and 214cm long, this will come in handy as I am starting to get "stockpiles" of good soils from doing landscaping, some of the clean rock, namely the river stone, will go into the bottom of the bed for drainage, as well as the old Apricot tree that was out the back,  and when it's full, I'll grab another one, I will be growing enough veggies to keep me both busy as well as supplementing the shopping list I'm also awaiting another quote for a new Colourbond front fence, as the "1980 style cemented in rock edging" that was there and "fashionable at the time" looked arse, and my god, the amount of cement used to fix the rock was insane, it took 1.5 days for me to break out 12 meters of the stuff by hand, trim the bushes back to the fence line and dump it out the back of the joint to deal with at a later date,I will soon need a skip bin to tip it all Unfortunately they did alot of the cemented in rock around the joint, which I hate, so a few pallets of retaining wall blocks for around the front and back where the cemented in rock is will be required to bring it up to a standard, and look, that I will be happy with 12 meters worth of rock and cement Finished smashing the fence line and ready for a fence to be installed, yes, the lawns need some TLC and thickness, the previous owner trimmed the grass to the roots 😢, the TLC I can provide, and nature over time will do the rest And there's probably about another 40 meters worth of this landscaping abomination left to do around the front and back gardens, I'm guessing maybe 3 or 4 tons worth, tip fees for this will be a killer Meh, all in all I'm having fun and keeping busy, plus, it's good PT

    • Just cut the bottom of the guard out. It's no longer got a big duct, to a sealed box, or a restriction. It has all the cold air from outside. Also, that cai you showed looks terrible. Bends are NOT good for go gos!
    • Like I said, "black magic" LOL In the end,  it is what it is, and hopefully, what this here knuckle head has done is an improvement and not a hindrance Not that I actually notice any negatives now, or that I will get any seat of the pants benefits when all is said and done, but best practice says I shouldn't be pulling intake air from the hot engine bay  Famous last words: I cannot see it being any worse than what it is at the moment 🤔
    • If the gases flowing in those two tracts had the same properties, you could maybe use such broscience. But the exhaust has a different composition, different normal density, different actual density (because of different normal density, and mostly because of the massively higher temperature), and different viscosity (again because of much higher temperature). Consequently, all of the fluid dynamics parameters that matter, that you calculate from these inputs, such as the Reynolds number, friction factors (for wall friction) and so on, are all incomparable.
