Hey guys,

Kind of silly n00b question, but im stuck, where do i begin modding my car,

Essentially i want the car to slide well (drift), but do i start with power or handeling?

The car is completely stock bar the front strut bar and a pod, should i go for exhaust or coilovers?

Any suggestions?

Cheers

(sorry for the n00b question........)

Good to hear. I have a 4 door gtst 32.

If you want to drift a good choice is the suspention. Coilovers all around.

front mont cooler and then you can up your boost a bit.

17" wheels are better than the standard for drift, they also look far better.

you also will need to lock/remove your HICAS (rear steering) because drifting will become hard with any speed.

(sorry for the misplacement of topic.... may bad)

Thanks for the info, i was leaning toward suspension, i was planning on teins and a hicas lock kit, looks like that will be my next mod!

I guess in the early learning stages power isnt important its more about technique and set up.

Thanks man.

:(

Yeah mate if you're heading for drift a set of coilovers with 8kg front, 6kg rear spring rates. Pretty good balance for a daily driver.

Make sure to get a Hicas lock BAR. As some kits only add washers to the hicas mechanism.

If you can handle a bare boot> Strip it bare.. There's a good 20-30 kgs kg's in there.

After the suspension is sorted you should really look at a good mechanical LSD. But if the stocker is in reasonable nick you could probably get away with it for a few months(cause I know stock exhausts suck). If you're really cheap you can get it 'Shimmed up'. But they rarely last more than a year after that.

That was another question i was going to ask was spring rates, thanks Drift limo!

Shimming up the diff sounds like it will cost more in the long run, what are your guys opinions on KAAZ diffs???

The lock bar is def going in, hicas is annoying :D

Should i be installing sway bars with the coils and camber arms?

Cheers guys

I have a R32 sedan which I use to compete with in Perth. The basic mods I started off with was a catback exhaust, pod filter, hicas lock, front and rear strut braces and a set of coilovers. Which I found was more than enough to start drifting on. Since then I have added pineapples, GTR skyline rear swaybar (enables slightly more oversteer), a cheap spring type boost controller and a FMIC. If I had my time again I would spend the money on buying a decent FMIC kit, preferably one which has 'switchback' piping (comes in at the right and goes back the same way) because it will for one allow you to put in a decent size oil cooler in a convinent location and also avoid the heatsoak that the piping recieves through the crossover piping (which pretty much render's the FMIC pointless).

There is no need for 17" rims or tyres. I drift on stock GTS-T rims 205/55R16's front and rear with the rears sets set to 45 psi. However if you already have them good grip front tyres are definately a necessity. Before you go drifting on the track remove your rear seat and spare tyre and then you should be able to fit 4 rims with tyres in the area where the back seat was with ease.

Having more power always helps.. but its pretty pointless if you can't use it effectively due to lack of driver skill or suspension setup. Stock power with a catback exhaust and a pod is more than enough to start off with. Allows you to drift with your foot flat as well most of the time which makes it easier to drift on.

So in your position I would say lock the HICAS as a first priority then find some coilovers and then an exhaust. And this should be more than enough to get you started.

Oh yeah make sure your handbrake is adjusted properly as well.

Cheers,

Baz, this will sound wierd but ive sen you slide at wanneroo and your the reason i got a four door.

What youve just said makes mucha sense, looks like ill be doing that switchback idea too!

Thanks for the input guys, it will be put to good use!!!

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
