Basically the arguments go:

Bigger diameter = less sidewall flex in tyre = better handling.

Bigger width = more traction and more power put down to the road due to increased tyre area = better launches/acceleration.

wider tyres are only better where you need more traction, like off the line. at speed wider tyres create more drag so they slow you down. thats why drag cars have skinny front tyres. easy way to see the difference is to get on a mountain bike and roll along flat ground. then get on a road bike and roll along the same ground. the road bike will roll quicker and for longer due to less rolling resistance.
