Total crap and a common misconception.

If a car is registered it must be roadworthy. Full stop.

Car park, street, car yard, your own driveway, anywhere - it can be defected.

A defect is only a suspicion of non compliance, you have to prove something DOES comply, not the other way around.

okay then. they tell ya when ya car is defected not to park it on a public thoroughfare afta your "grace period" expires. so what you're sayin is that its illegal to hav it parked in ya driveway with a defect on it. or am i confused.

Hi guys, being the owner of a heavily modified 32 i myself have received some serious unwanted attention from the boys in blue. Mine also is not the quietest of cars, and with hks cams it lumps over pretty harshly too. Ive had police come to my house when i still lived at home and my dad answered the door, they asked to speak to me in relation to driving offenses etc, dad asked them what in particular they were referring to, when they mentioned reckless driving the previous night and the car i was driving dad told them that i was asleep and wasnt going to bother waking me up for something so pathetic and told them to get there facts straight before bothering me again as i wasnt even driving the 32 the night before and it had been locked in the shed all night. They then asked if they could see the car and he said they had no reason too. He then told them to leave. Never heard anything after that either, but the point is i wasnt driving the car the night before, so where the hell did they get the idea from? After reading this thread im beginnning to think that it must have been some pathetic fool with too much spare time on there hands thats tried to get me in trouble by ringing up and making a complaint, only problem being that they stuffed up on the assumption i was driving the car the night they accused me. Im waiting for the day they try to come to my house and defect my car as you have to get through one garage, across a back yard with 2 very large and not so friendly dogs, then into a locked and alarmed shed, because i wont be showing it to them willingly thats for sure. If they ask ill say no, and i dont see that they can force you to let them in, atleast without a warrant.

Sorry for the rant but im sick of being hassled by the cops when i dont do anything wrong, if im acting like a hoon ill wear it, but i havent had a speeding fine for over 2 years, so to be grouped together with all other import owners as being hoons pisses me off. I have a show quality car that im scared to take out anymore and it infuriates me!

sell it, mod the Stagea RS260 a little, and be happy with the RB26dett and the gsxr1000 - cant go wrong with that :)

Confused a little.

Once it is defected, your driveway is fine. You can't park it on the road after it's defected, same as if it's not registered.

just deny ever being in you8r car at that time and they wont be able to do anything. If they take the matter further and call you in to the police station just say that some one could have a Vendetta against you or something.. IVe used this b4 when being picked up for doing something on the freeway and got out of a 270 dollar fine and demerit points

I had a chance to use this toady but the bastards car was so dirty i couldn't make out his no plate.

I was going down Flagstaff Hill Rd at 8.30 this morning, I had an EB falcon was so close to the back of my car i couldn't see his lights. I didn't speed up as there was traffic around. When we got to the bottom of the flagstaff hill he pulled out and went around me, then pulled infront and slammed the brakes on when there was no traffic infront of him, I had to hit the brakes hard to stop in time. He then stick his finger up at me then drove off.

I was so pissed off all day at work from this. Had I got his plate no i would have stopped off At Sturt Police station on the way to work.

GRIM_R32,

If they ask to see the car simply say its in parts in the shed then state some one has a grudge against you as they have spiked tyres and scratched your car in the drive way. :D

Thanks for the suggestion tangles, but im greedy, ill keep them all and still work on the Stagea! lol!

And thanks for the idea cubes, i was thinkn of telling them the car wasnt there and how much id love to help them out but i just cant seem to think where i left it last.....damn that memory of mine!

yeah then whilst reporting him another cop outside probably would have looked over your car and defected it when you came out. :D

hehe sounds good... Poker night at Vanges.. leave 3am.. let the cars idle for 5 minutes and off we all leave over a period of 20minutes.. 1 car leave every few minutes.. lmao.

thats with a motorkahna style luanch :D 4000RPM

I've been sitting on this for a while but it's time I came clean. I am a self confessed Skyline nut AND a police officer ( I know, weird aint it??). Basically I'm sick of seeing us (either police or enthusiasts)as being labelled, because of the attitudes or actions of a few. How does it go?, one bad apple? Works either way.

I would much prefer to take the all the smoke belching, brake fading, oil dripping pieces of crap off the road for good than defect ONE Nissan or other import for minor stuff. Mind you, having said that, if it is a totally blatant no-no, then I wouldn't have much of a choice.

As far as the law and defects are concerned, forget what some people tell you and look it up for yourself. It's all here on the net.

Oh, one more thing. If anyone has a question, don't ask me. In the end it is still up to you to seek professional legal advice.

GTSTD1, can i just ask you if you may be able to answer a couple of quick things for us all?

Firstly, as a police officer have you or any of your colegues been given orders to directly target imports on the road and ignore the obvious rust buckets?

And lastly can you clarify the situation with being defected in your own drive way on private property? This was brought up earlier where by we have been told we can be defected in our own drive way and then the car is fine to stay there, yet the car is not allowed to be parked on the road infront of your house as this is a violation of the order for being on the road? What rights do police have to issue an defect notice on private property if the car is not actually on a public road at the time? And do owners have any legal rights to ask that the police leave there property?

Sorry to be a pain but its something that comes up quite alot and would be great if you could help us understand what the correct story is?

Yes as the saying goes..

The minority spoil it for the majority.

GTSTD1,

From your perspective, what is it generally that causes an officer to pull over a car for a general check?

Lowered, big exhaust milo tin looking things or do you simply do a quick history check?

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve.
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
