Hey guys my R32 has developed a little annoying problem, i am aware that the speedo is connected via a metal wire from behind the surround and there seems to be a clicking at least every second when i'm going down the freeway, usually doing over 110km/h it will just keep ticking. Has anyone else had this problem or knows how to fix it without ripping my whole dash apart? Also had a search couldn't find any perviously related topics. Any help would be appreciated :(

Cheers,

Rhys

Mine does the same, I just assummed it was my keys tapping, its rather irregular and I have a metal keyring... I might try holding onto my keys next time I hear it - and keep watching this thread :(

its actually part of a what is now defunct speed warning chime. they dont seem to last..

do a search for it and u'll find some info on it.

mine does the same, its dying, sounds like a cat being hit with baseball bat...(not really) but u get the idea... search function is your friend!

I found this info on another site. I haven't tried it yet.

http://www.skyline-nissan.net/home/p2_articleid/21/s//amp;

- Remove the plastic panels under the driver's side dashboard.

- Drop the steering column (using the height / reach adjustment)

- Remove the instrument cluster. The small aluminium box on a bracket behind the

cluster is the noisemaker. Be very careful with the speedo cable – there is a plastic

sleeve than is prone to splitting where the cable enters the back of the speedometer. It

can be fixed with some heat shrink tubing or at a pinch some PVC tape.

- Disconnect the spade terminal, and remove the dingdong box. Peace at last.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

aha, just discovered this thread having been working on my r32 gtr.

since i bought her i've had this ticking noise behind or in the dash cluster. it sounds like, to me, a box full of cockroaches running around inside. the noise happens regardless of the speed at which i'm travelling.

having taken my dash apart, i am 90% sure it's the speedometer cable making the clicking noise because i can localise the sound to the cable when the dash is off. it's the only thing clicking. i do not think it is a speed limiter.

anyone else have this?

That will fix the ticking noise as it is the over 100kph speed chime thing....

in my case the ticking noise occurs regardless of the speed at which i'm going - usually much less than 100 kph...any ideas?

i would reckon that it is still the stupid little silver canister that is to blame.....

just rip out the dash and remove the little f*kker and that should fix it...

otherwise it will most probably be the speedo cable.

good luck

trying to revive an old thread here.. I have a sound that comes intermittently from my r32 gtst dash (in winter only..) at driving speeds only. Makes a nightmare to try diagnose and it can only be described as a box full of cockroaches running around exactly as Sigsputnik has said. My overspeed chime seems to be working fine. Did you find out in the end what the problem was?

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
