Hello

I'm currently looking around for a r32, and browsing carsales, autotrader, there seem to be many import dealers selling skylines.

I was wondering if import dealers are flexible with their prices?

I have currently found a manual 1993 R32 auction grade 4, for sale from a dealer for $13,500

This includes 3year warranty, RWC, 12mnth rego, compliance etc.

After speaking with JSA imports, their warranty does not include engine and im sure other dealers would follow the same path for a r32.

If you break up the costs;

- According to Prestigemotorsports, 1993 r32 sells for $11,200

- 12mnth rego $560

- RWC

- 3yr warranty

The reason im asking this is because import dealers seem to be different to regular 2nd hand car dealers. As they would import the car close or same to j-spec's/prestige's offer? Which seems to be a small profit margin with the added rwc, rego, warranty included.

What are the chances of haggling the price down? to $11,500 if paid in cash.

Trying to stay away from private sellers because there is no guarantee about the state of the car. With a dealer i can always return with the dodgy car and settle any problems.

Thanks

- Patrick

if you dont want a dodgy car, i'd be staying right away from imports.

i'd say the chances of haggling are limited because of the demand of the vehicle. they could get 13500. dealers know what a car is worth and they will not sell below that.

that said, good luck! i hope you get them down. no harm or shame in asking. you'll probbaly find a middle ground with them.

So you would rather import a car you have never even seen let alone driven, then take a mechanic with you to look at a private car? Most mechanics would do it for a carton if you ask nice.

I am not requesting an import of a car form the dealer. Most dealers import cars them selves and then sell in their car yard. The cars are already in Australia with trader plates in order to test drive and take to mechanic.

sorry for the confusion

if u pay cash? how else are u thinking of paying?

What do you mean?

There are other ways of paying instead of directly with cash?

cheques, bank transfers, finance through dealer?

Paying outright with cash at a dealer or most shops have greater leverage in haggling the price....

Did you manage to have any issues with negotiating the price? Or were their prices firm, even with cash? JSA have been calling me constantly asking me to come in and view their range of r32's, shouldnt have given my mob number haha.

Could you please tell me the address of kamakaze?

Thanks

in some ways buying an import is no different to buying any car.

1- go through the dealer for finance - pay with no chance of a deal

2 - pay CASH (yep all real australian money) and they will talk to you.

When I went buy my skyline, I went around for a look first, finally found one that I like (5 months later and a beaut r33 s2) and after having an independant mechanic inspect it, returned to the yard with $5000 cash.

The conversation went something like this.

ME - I want that car

Dealer - yep, its this much

ME - I will give you this 5 grand cash now as a deposit if we can work out a deal, no deal, I walk. ( shows money)

Dealer - will you pay the rest in cash?

ME - If it gets me a better deal.

Dealer - price offered

ME - price screwed a little more

Dealer - Accepted.

If you are trying to do it through finance though you will have no leverage. Dealers generally get a commission through the finance company involved, the more you pay, the more commish they earn.

If you are gonna pay in cash, be prepared to walk away. I bet when you say no deal, pick up your 5 grand and go to leave, they will be on you like a fat kid on a cup cake.

Just use your leverage, show them the money and stick to what you want. Dont get talked into s##t by some dodgy salesman who could f##k up a cup of coffee.

If thats how your doing it then the only difference to buying private is a dealer is charging a few thou on top to make his cut.

Sorry if I sound like a fool, but I would rather buy a private car from someone off these forums or out of the trader who has serviced it properly every 5 thousand K's etc then some f**kwit dealer only interested in making a buck, they don't care what condition the car is in. Why would they? all I'm saying is there is a lot of time bombs out there, be careful what you buy.

I agree with you Flipmo in regards to the difference in care between a private and dealer seller. I wouldnt been keen on purchasing a skyline from a dealer which has had a previous australian owner.

Im currently looking into 2 skylines which are being sold by dealers.

One is scheduled to arrive in 2 weeks from Japan and the other is waiting at the docks.

These cars are fresh from japan and have no previous australian owner. Also due to the new import laws, an accident damaged car cannot be imported.

I have inspected several private sellers and found most of them had accident damage and tried to cover it up; and all the straight r32's are already modified and are selling for $14,000. I would still need to include rego, rwc, stamps etc which adds up.

Through these import dealers i can find a freshly imported r32 without taking the risk or private importing as the car is already in Australia with dealer trader plates in order to take to mechanic.

Going back to my original question, as the dealers know the import price of the car and demand, i was wondering how eager they will be to drop the price.

Thanks

Got a call from dealer, saying the car will be at his workshop this tuesday. This being the auction grade 4 1993 R32.

Looking at the pictures currently, the rear shows the sticker "gts t"? isn't there meant to be a "-"? ie; "gts-t"

Seller claims it to be Type M GTS-T...

Just a bit paranoid I guess haha

Thanks

It's a bit of a game of chicken. sometimes i have to negotiate the sale of cars at work (on behalf of external vendors). a buyer will say "take price X or i will walk" and most of the time you let them. half wont ring you back but the other half will accepting the vendors initial offer.

When people say less for cash in terms of cars don't they just mean anything except finance? Eg. cash, bank transfer (same thing), cheque etc.

Walking around with $20k in your pocket isnt really feasible, when a bank transfer is only a phone call or a second on the internet away.

Yep your're right when I think about it. Depending on how shifty the dealer is in regards to tax etc, a bank check is easier to track compared to straight out cash. (could be wrong on that assumption though)

Ill ask the dealer if he wants cash/check and see which one he picks.

Organising RACV inspection tomorrow and we'll see how things go :D

R34GT-t_07 a $5k drop is huge, using your ratio i could drop the price by $1900 :D;)

Thanks

I did buy my r33 from JSA, they were actually good for me. They dropped the price, the car interior was in very very good condition and the engine bay was in good nick. I was thinking about taking the car back to them for the service, as ive only had it for about a month and a bit now but now you have me thinking, do i or dont i, are they that bad. I relise that they will f**k around with the odemetre and make it all nice for the consumer but the car i bought was actaully very good, maybe people have had a bed experience with them but mine was good. I must say that i started dealing with some sales bloke then changed to the managing director, i wont say names but he was acually pretty cool with me, unlike the sales bloke just looking for the buck.

Thats my $1

    • I'm looking for some real world experiences/feed back from anyone who has personally ran a EFR7670 with a 1.05 exhaust housing or a .83 I'm leaning towards the .83 because its a street car used mostly for spirited driving in the canyons roads. I"m not looking for big numbers on paper. I want a responsive powerband that will be very linear to 8000 rpm. I dont mind if power remains somewhat flat but dont want power to drop off on top. The turbo I've purchased is a 1.05, although the mounting flange T3 vs T4 and internal vs external waste gates are different on both housings, I not concern about swapping parts or making fabrication mods to get what I want. Based on some of the research I've done with chat gpt, the 1.05 housing seems to be the way to go with slightly more lag and future proofing for more mods but recommends .83 for best response/street car setup. AI doesn't have the same emotions as real people driving a GTR so I think you guys will be able to give me better feed back 😀
    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
