Pinging

I have a r33 running 13 to 14 psi with stock turbo using premium unleaded and was wondering if under flat accelaration is it unavoidable to get some pinging which i know is very bad. I also notice some black smoke from exhaust which ive been told is unburnt fuel due to the pinging. Is this correct and what can i do to stop damage to engine. thanks dean

How about turn the boost down.

You have not said anything about an aftermarket front mounted intercooler, or anything about aftermarket computer.

That black smoke you see means you are running rich which means it hasn’t been tuned to run that sort of boost/air flow.

Turn it back down to about 10psi for now until you have sorted out some form of cooling and tuning.

If he were running the factory computer wouldnt it hit a fuel cut at that boost level?

its nenver "normal" to get pinging

that black smoke is NORMAL and is due to the stock ECU running quite rich

it could be

- problem with the timing - check the bast timing using a timing light

- runnign too much boost

- too rich (even mroe than stock)

- spark plug problem

- coil problem

get it checked out by a mechanic on the dyno mate
